$400,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 95th Running – Saturday, May 4, 2019 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Track Record – 1:33.26, Fruit Ludt (2014) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 2020 ETERNAL PEACE PROVES PROVEN STRATEGIES: SURVIVAL KIT TO HELP TRAINERS by Len Green WORTH THE WAIT Last week, I was listening to the TDN Podcast. The Green Group Guest of the Week was the very successful trainer and four-time Eclipse winner Chad Brown. One of the panelists asked Chad if he was affected by economically by COVID-19, even though he had relationships with so many significant owners who might be able to weather the storm of uncertainty. Chad=s response was that Aall trainers are being affected, especially the smaller to midsize ones.@ That got me thinking. I have seen hundreds of articles and podcasts on the CARES Act, but not one of them was specific to trainers and what options they had, until now. THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2019 DAUGHTERS MAY SPARK PET AND MRI: A BRAVE NEW DIAGNOSTIC WORLD by Dan Ross JUMP START'S LEGACY Earlier this month, The Stronach Group announced the arrival later this year at Santa Anita of the Longmile Positron Emission Tomography (MILE-PET) Scan machine--a technology currently under development at California's UC Davis, that could revolutionize the diagnosis of emerging lower limb injuries that could deteriorate into something catastrophic. But Santa Anita's new PET scan machine might not be the only important development at the track. According to CHRB equine medical director Rick Arthur, efforts are afoot to possibly bring a standing MRI to Santa Anita. The MRI machine's possible arrival raises some interesting tensions between the two diagnostic modalities. Indeed, proponents of both technologies argue passionately about their individual merits in early injury detection. But what isn't up for debate is how they both present a win for the horse. The 158th running of the 1 1/4-mile Queen’s Plate, North America’s oldest annually run stakes race, lured a field of 13 Canadian-bred 3-year-olds vying for shares of the $1 million pot. Luis Contreras had picked up the mount on Stronach Stable’s Holy Helena for the first time in the Woodbine Oaks, which she won by one length. In the Queen’s Plate, her margin of victory was 3 ½ lengths. “I was very confident today after winning the Oaks, and last Monday I breezed her on the surface and she did it pretty easy,” said Contreras, who won his second Queen’s Plate, the first coming with the filly Inglorious in 2011. As expected, State of Honor had made the early pace in the Queen’s Plate through a quarter in :24.17, half in :48.67, and six furlongs in 1:13.23. Megagray, who had stalked the front-runner from second place in his first start with blinkers, poked his head in front in early stretch and led by that margin with the mile going in 1:37.64.
