HEAD COACH • 28TH SEASON • BROCKPORT STATE ‘82 THE GOTKIN FILE Rick Gotkin enters his 28th season as head coach of the Mercyhurst University men’s hockey team. Since coming to Erie in 1988, Gotkin has spent nearly PERSONAL three decades instilling a winning tradition in the men’s hockey program. Gotkin, Born: November 7, 1959 the only coach in NCAA history to take a team to the NCAA Tournament at all Place of Birth: Brooklyn, N.Y. three levels, has guided the Lakers to nearly 500 wins, six NCAA tournament Wife: The former Diane Kaminski of Erie, Pa. appearances and five league championships. His teams have averaged 18 wins a season and have made the postseason in 25 of the 27 EDUCATION years he has been at Mercyhurst. SUNY, College of Canton In June of 2015, Gotkin was inducted into the Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Associate of Science Degree, 1980 Sports Hall of Fame. SUNY, College of Brockport Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, 1982 Last season, the Lakers won 19 games and defeated out-of-conference opponents Merrimack and Colgate in the process. Mercyhurst also played to a COACHING BACKGROUND 2-2 overtime tie against Ohio State in early January at the Erie Insurance Arena. 1982-83 The Lakers reached the championship game of the Atlantic Hockey Conference playoffs before bowing to RIT. After the season, eight of Gotkin’s players signed Assistant Coach, SUNY, College of Brockport professional contracts while 18 were named to the Atlantic Hockey conference All-Academic Team. 1983-84 Head Coach, Enschede Lions Pro Hockey Club BY THE YEARS In 2013-14, the Lakers won their first Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) regular season title since joining the conference in 2003. (Netherlands) The season ended when the Lakers bowed 5-4 in double overtime YEAR OVERALL CONF to Canisius in the conference semifinals. Junior goaltender Jimmy 1984-85 1988-89 11-16-1 5-12-1 Sarjeant was named the AHA’s Player of the Year and earned the Head Coach, SUNY, College of Canton 1989-90 18-8-4 16-3-2 Goaltender of the Year honors. It marked the first time since the 1990-91 19-13-1 15-3-0 league’s inception in 2003-04 that a Mercyhurst player garnered the Player of the Year award. Gotkin himself was named the league’s 1985-86 1991-92 19-12-0 13-8-0 Coach of the Year for the first time. It was his first Coach-of-the-Year Head Coach, Fife Flyers Pro Hockey Club (Scotland) 1992-93 18-10-0 15-3-0 honors since 2001 when Mercyhurst was a member of the MAAC Hockey League. 1993-94 12-13-0 6-4-0 1986-88 1994-95 23-3-2 6-1-1 During the 2012-13 season, Gotkin became the 26th coach in NCAA Assistant Coach, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 1995-96 18-7-2 5-4-0 history, at any division, to record 450 career wins when the Lakers 1996-97 16-9-2 5-5-1 defeated Army in game two of the first round of the Atlantic Hockey 1988-current Association (AHA) playoffs. He guided the Lakers to a 19-17-5 overall 1997-98 17-9-1 4-5-1 Head Coach, Mercyhurst University 1998-99 16-10-2 3-4-1 record and helped Mercyhurst to the AHA title game for the first time since 2009. PRE D-I TOTALS 187-110-15 93-52-7 GOTKIN BY THE NUMBERS During his tenure, Gotkin has produced seven All Americans, four NCAA Appearances: 6 (1991, 1993, 1995, 2001, 1999-00 23-10-4 19-6-2 ECAC Players of the Year, three ECAC Rookies of the Year, five 2003, 2005) 2000-01 22-12-2 19-6-1 MAAC First-Team selections, an AHA Player-of-the-Year, 24 AHA All- ECAC Playoff Appearances: 10 (1990-1999) Conference selections, and two AHA Rookies of the Year. Along with their coach, the Lakers have been very active outside of school as well. Under Gotkin’s direction, players have volunteered their time each year with the Edmund L. Thomas Adolescent Center, the Shriners Hospitals for Children, the annual college food drive and the Skating Club of Erie. The Lakers also perform at the annual Gliding Stars of Erie show - an organization that helps disabled kids learn how to skate.

In 1995, the varsity hockey team won the Sister Rita Panciera Award given annually to the Mercyhurst College group that “best exemplifies the values of mercy”. In March of 1998, the team was honored again, this time by the Erie Achievement Center for its work with the disabled. Meanwhile, during Gotkin’s stay at Mercyhurst, the team’s cumulative QPA has been consistently good with his players majoring in such fields as Criminal Justice, Accounting, Pre-Dental, History, and Business Administration. In 2013-14, defenseman Nick Jones was named the conference’s student- athlete of the year while 17 of his players made the AHA All-Academic team.

Gotkin is married to the former Diane Kaminski of Erie, Pa. They are the parents of two children: Lindsey Ann was born September 2, 1991, and Brandon Reed arrived April 1, 1995. Lindsey, a Mercyhurst alum, is studying law at DePaul University in Chicago while Brandon is a sophomore member of the varsity hockey team.
