Respect & Greetings in the Dojo At the beginning & at the end of training we line up, in grade order, to show our respect to our dojo, our instructors & each other. The highest grade student will be at the beginning of the line and will be responsible for responding with the correct greeting &/or intro- ducing the starting letters of our “DojoKun” - see page 1 of newslet- ter. ONLY those who know what to say, should stand at the begin- ning of the line! When everyone is lined up, your instructor will start/finish the session by saying: “Yoi” (attention) and “Musubi-Dachi” = stand like this Instructor then bows & says “Rei” (greeting) - you then bow. Instructor says “Seiza” & goes into kneeling position—you do same. Instructor says “Mokutsu” - you now close your eyes, sit still & relax, quietly breathing in through nose & out through mouth. When instructor says “Mokutsu Yame” you open your eyes and the highest grade student, at beginning of line, will say either: “Sensei Ni Rei” - if instructor is a black belt (Dan grade) OR “Sempai Ni Rei” - if instructor is a student grade (KYU grade) You now all bow to your instructor and wait until he stands up and signals you to do the same. Stand up quietly and when instructor says “Rei” bow again and you can leave. Don’t forget to BOW again when leaving the dojo, in direction of hall
