Presidents Report By now members will have received a copy of the Draft Constitution for comment. Please read and return your comments to me at [email protected]. Reply even if you are happy with it as it is, or with comments for possible inclusion. On another note it is pleasing to see Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club getting on top of their debt. I have been given approval to include an announcement given to SLGC members from their Presi- dent. There is plenty of room for both golf clubs and I congratulate SLGC on their current suc- cess.

Dear Members, When this club executed its transition to an independent Board in June of 2013, it did so encumbered but supported by access to an interest free financial facility for a set period to enable the club to continue via- bly whilst the new Board implemented its longer term business plan. Whilst transition had occurred, the potential consequences of the club not meeting its commitment to repay the facility by the March 31, 2015 deadline continued to hinder our progress. As stated at the most recent AGM, it was the strategy of this Board to divest of a number of land parcel assets surplus to our requirements to enable the repayment to occur. In what has been a lengthy and complex exercise, the club has now entered into a contract of sale for these parcels at true market value to an independent developer new to the Sanctuary Lakes community enabling the complete repayment of its outstanding debt to the outgoing developer. Members need to appreciate the significance of this event. We as a club are now truly independent of its past without any potential encumbrances or obligations. It should also be noted therefore that the rumours surrounding the sale of the driving range, alterations to the course including the touted reconfiguration of the 17th & 18th holes, a reduction to a 9-hole course amongst others have been and are totally false, spread by those with agendas that were not in the best inter- ests of the club. The Board would like to acknowledge the support received by the Sanctuary Lakes Resort Services throughout this process. The Board intends to host a Member's Forum in the near future to provide the op- portunity to discuss the significance of this occasion and our plans for the future of our club. Thank you. Ron Gauci Chairman - Sanctuary Lakes Club

CARE OF THE COURSE Members the care of the course is everyone's responsibility. Please take the time to repair the pitch mark, repair the divot and rake the bunker. Graham Roper Captain

Rules

Hello WPGC Members, With winter fast approaching I found this article on WWW.PGA.COM in regards to Winter Rules.

Winter Rules What A Golfer Needs To Know

Just because it's winter doesn't mean you should be playing "winter rules."

That's a misconception many amateurs have about playing this time of year. The Kikuyu maybe coming dormant and the lies may not always be the best, but if it's a dry, sunny day, you're probably not allowed relief.

As Bryan Jones, co-vice chairman of the PGA Rules Committee, explains, the decision to allow "lift, clean and place" has little to do with temperature and everything to do with course condi- tions. And the ultimate decision to allow "preferred lies" -- as one of the Local Rules -- falls into the hands of the course staff or club committee.

That's why you'll sometimes see "lift, clean and place" implemented after a heavy rain. If the club committee determines that there are "adverse conditions," the Preferred Lies/Winter Rules section of the Rule Book comes into play, even if it's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk.

None of the 34 Rules of Golf directly address the issue of "winter rules," but Appendix 1, Part A, Definition 4b specifically deals with adverse conditions. Here is the exact phrasing from the Rule Book:

Adverse conditions, including the poor condition of the course or the existence of mud, are sometimes so general, particularly during winter months, that the Committee may decide to grant relief by temporary Local Rule either to protect the course or to promote fair and pleasant play. The Local Rule should be withdrawn as soon as the conditions warrant.

Members please make sure that you sign your score card after your round. Failure to do so will result in disqualifica- tion from the competition. Handicapper

SOCIAL REPORT - LEGENDS OF ROCK 21ST MARCH 2015

“Oh what a night it was, it really was such a night”

The evening kicked off with pre-dinner drinks and was followed by a delicious Buffet Dinner pro- vided by Zdrava Hrana Catering, who came highly recommended and did not disappoint. The meal included succulent pork, bbq chicken, deep fried calamari, home- made sausages and burgers & goulash accompanied by roasted potatoes, salad, rice etc.

After dinner the entertainment began with Joe Piastrino as “Roy Orbison” performing “Pretty Woman” and many other “Big O” favourites.

A short break and he was back with a medley of songs from such legends as Buddy Holly and more. Another costume change and he finished up with many of our favourite “Elvis” hits. It really ws “such a night” with the dance floor packed as per usual for our events. A huge thanks to the Social Committee Lisa Borg, Ronnie Anderson, Sandra Smith, ( me Lynn Cornfield!) and the Wednesday Volunteers (for cleaning the windows) for donating much time and effort to this event. This includes selling tickets and collecting money, booking artist, choos- ing caterers, decorating the clubrooms ( sensational again Lisa!!), buying raffle and other prizes, all of which takes up a lot of time. Also a big thank you to all the members who supported the event, along with their families & friends.. Also to Mandy & Jodie for their hard work on the night. NEXT EVENT- JULY – QUIZ NIGHT. Details soon ......

As golfer or ANZAC, Pearce a true hero

by Golf

Clyde Pearce.

As we commemorate Gallipoli’s centenary, it’s fitting to take stock of golf’s links to the Great War and how one of the sport’s first home-grown stars paid the ultimate price in Europe. Clyde Pearce came to public prominence aged 15 when, already a scratch golfer, he finished 19th in the Championship. And from his humble beginnings in , the wiry yet effortlessly powerful Pearce reached four straight national amateur finals from 1906-09, but won just once in 1908. It was in that year, however, that he also won the at The Australian in Sydney, the host club of this year’s national championship. Pearce shot and later equalled the course record on his way to becoming the first national champion born on Australian soil. Having spent time living in Corowa and on the plains of southern Western Australia, he enlisted for national service and while he didn’t arrive at Gallipoli until November, 1915, he would go on to serve heroically across several theatres of war. Tragically, Pearce was shot and killed in the bloody Battle of Messines in June, 1917, his tal- ents – like all of his fallen comrades – wasted far from home in a hail of bullets.
