June 19, 2006 SUBJECT: 2

Starting Monday, June 5, 2006 the Human Resources Department launches the 3rd annual “iCOD Internet Offence Declaration Process to all TCDSB employees, under Ontario Regulation 521/01, for the “2006/07” school year

The Board’s “iCOD” (Internet Criminal Offence Declaration) website will be available for all employees to complete and submit their required offence declaration for the 2006/07 school year. As a reminder to all employees, the Ontario Regulation 521/01 requires all school boards to collect offence declarations from all employees by each September 1. All employees are required to make an annual offence declaration. Failure to do so may result in suspension or termination of employment. The iCOD website is a highly secure, private and confidential. Employees may access this website in the privacy of their homes, at their place of work or at a public library through any web browser that supports a minimum 128-bit encryption.

The iCOD site will be available starting Monday June 5, 2006 through to August 31, 2006. However, we are asking all school-based employees to complete their offence declaration by June 30, 2006. Employees may access iCOD through the following links: • the iCOD website at : https://icod.tcdsb.org • through the Board’s Internet website home page at: http://www.tcdsb.org under the “Staff” page at: http://www.tcdsb.org/staff • through the Board’s Intranet site at: http://intranet.tcdsb.org

Should you need assistance once you are on the iCOD website, you may contact Human Resources at: 416-222-8282, ext. 2999 or e-mail your concerns or questions to [email protected].

Tips to note before logging on to iCOD: For those employees that do remember their iCOD password from last June’s offence declaration process, all you have to do is sign onto iCOD and complete this year’s 2006/07 offence declaration.

For those employees that do not remember their “iCOD password” from last June’s offence declaration process, as well as any new employees that did not participate in the 2005/06 process, please refer to the upper right hand corner of your payslip for “iCOD registration information.” You will need to refer to this information when accessing iCOD to register and complete your declaration:

• Connect to: https://icod.tcdsb.org. You must register as a “new user”. • Once you are in the “Registration for New User” screen, you will be asked to enter a password in a field called “User Password”. This password does not have to be a TCDSB password that you may currently be using for other TCDSB applications. iCOD is a totally separate system, independent from any other TCDSB application. Create your own password for iCOD and privately document this number in your personal belongings. • An iCOD userid will be provided to you by the iCOD application once you have registered. Remember this userid; store it with your iCOD password that you created. • Once you have registered in iCOD, you must continue in the application with the “declaration process”.

Frequently Asked Questions:

For a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the TCDSB iCOD process please click on the FAQ link on the http://icod.tcdsb.org home page or go directly to http://www.tcdsb.org/icoddocs/FAQ.htm to access TCDSB iCOD FAQs directly.

Should anyone be uncertain if they have committed a “criminal” offence, please contact your personal legal counsel for further clarification.

The Human Resources Department wishes to thank all employees for their cooperation and patience during this new process, initiated under Ontario Regulation 521/01.

St. Barnabas athletes nearly pull off Grand Slam NORM NELSON, Scarborough Mirror 06/13/06

St. Barnabas Catholic Elementary School very nearly accomplished its own version of the Grand Slam this school year with its basketball and volleyball teams winning three of the four city titles up for grabs. The boys accomplished the rare double feat while the girls didn't miss by much, winning the volleyball title and only missing a shot at the hoops final with a heart-breaking one-point loss in a semi-final game. The girls hoops team was the defending champs after having earned the school its first girls city hoops title the previous year.

For coach Gord MacLean, it marked only the third time in his 27 years of coaching that the volleyball/hoops double has been accomplished, the other two being at St. Barnabas in 1999 to 2000 and prior to that at St. Gerald in 1989 to 1990. MacLean is head coach of the boys teams and he assisted coach Anthony Kerim for the girls teams.

Nine of the boys suited up for both the basketball and volleyball teams.

The season started off with volleyball, and the boys won the championship game 2-0 over St. Stephen, capping a perfect record throughout the regular season and playoffs. Including tournament play, they posted an impressive 79- 11 count in games, their only match loss to another city team being St. Dominic Savio in the finals of a tournament. Outside of Toronto, they lost to a Halton team, in the semifinals of the Catholic elementary provincial tournament.

"We have a very strong volleyball program, probably stronger than basketball," said MacLean, adding it marked the boys second successive city volleyball title. "The boys team has been in the city championship for volleyball seven consecutive years, and we're four-and-three.

The team was led by setter and captain Jesse Diaz. "Call him Mr. Clutch," MacLean said of Diaz. "When the pressure's on, he's very loose, he makes the plays all the time."

The basketball team was perhaps even more impressive with a 39-1 overall record, including a perfect record throughout the regular season and playoffs. They entered seven tournaments, winning six of them and ended up as a finalist in the other one, which accounted for their lone loss - to St. Dorothy from Etobicoke.

Fittingly, they avenged that loss with a 44-43 win in the finals for their first city title since 2000. "It was well played - both teams," McLean said. "We had played each other three times during the year and the largest margin was three points."

While obviously big in accomplishments, the team was actually physically rather small, but made up for it with "team speed" and "a lot of skill." He termed Courtney Dawkins, "the best captain I've ever had in my life as a coach. He's a leader on the floor."

The girls volleyball team, even more dominant than the dominant boys team with an 81-4 margin in games, beat Our Lady of Sorrows in two straight in the city final.

The team was led by setter and captain Cynthia Tseng. "Everything perfect - serve, hit dig, set," MacLean said of Tseng. "She's off to Mary Ward next year and lucky for them."

Next year, he said, he expects St. Barnabas to be in contention for a never-before accomplished "double boys and double girls."

Notre Dame Staff and Students recognized for work in Sears Drama Festival Excerpt from “Professionally Speaking” – June 2006 – The Magazine of the Ontario College of Teachers Marguerite Vermey and Carmela Arangio are two young teachers who first led the students of Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School – a girls' school in east Toronto – to the festival stage three years ago. They have taken the festival by storm each year since with three entirely different and highly theatrical collective creations – each more breathtakingly inventive than the last. In 2004, their first year as colleagues in the drama department at Notre Dame, Vermey and Arangio presented Old Turtle, an adaptation of a contemporary American children's story by Douglas Wood. “In the story, people are arguing about what is sacred, about whose god is right – almost destroying each other and the earth in the process,” Vermey explains, adding: “when what is sacred is what pulls us together.” Working with a strongly multicultural community of 30 girls from Grades 9 and 10, who spoke 26 languages amongst them, Vermey and Arangio framed the story by adding two Ojibway characters – a grandmother passing her teachings on to her granddaughter as she is about to die – and alluding to indigenous peoples across the globe through costumes and music. The turtle itself was a huge puppet manipulated by six girls. Since this was at the time of the US invasion of Iraq, Vermey felt “the message was timely.” Old Turtle went from the provincial showcase in May 2004 to the IDEA (International Drama Educators Association) conference in Ottawa in June of that year. In 2005, Notre Dame's second production, Enter My Goddess, also went to the provincials and was then performed in Toronto's Summerworks, a professional theatre festival, in August. The 24 girls in the cast received an Outstanding Ensemble Award from Toronto's NOW Magazine. While this looks like a leap to professional theatre, Vermey – fresh from the excitement of having their current production again selected for the provincial showcase – remains passionate about the educational value of her work. “We encourage girls who are probably fence-sitting about whether they even want to be in school,” she contends. “They take a challenge like this and see it through. There's not much that's going to spook you after going through the performance wheel at Sears.” This sense of community seems to sustain both students and teachers through the long hours of fundraising, organizing and seemingly endless rehearsals. It helps them face the inevitable disappointments. Not everyone rides all the way through to provincials and beyond for three years running, like those indomitable young women from Notre Dame in Toronto.”

Bishop Allen students win video contest TAMARA SHEPHARD Etobicoke Guardian 06/13/06

Four Bishop Allen Academy students recently took top prizes in a citywide video contest to promote an end to gang and gun violence in Toronto. Students won $2,700 - $1,700 split among themselves - another $1,000 to support their school's media program, which could include the purchase of a new DVD digital camcorder. "The school's not wrestling with these issues, but students were motivated and really wanted to practice their filmmaking skills," media studies teacher Mark Tuohy said. "I like to enter them in (filmmaking) contests wherever possible." Titled PEACE (Public Education and Crime Eradication), the Toronto Police Service's project educates youth on the dangers of gang membership and the need to put down guns. A Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services grant funded the two-year project. Emory Collegiate, Norman Bethune Collegiate, Oakwood Institute, Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre and Fisherville Junior High School also won top contest prizes. Submitted story ideas, scripts, storyboards or 60 to 90-second videos addressed questions related to victims, consequences, choices, getting out of a gang and reporting acts of violence. "Savvy storytellers" is how Tuohy described his students' work. Two male students took first place in the script category, as well as second prize for story idea. Two female students took first prize in for story idea, as well as third prize for script. One image transformed a shot of a closed fist into two fists "giving each other props," Tuohy said. Another shows a boy telling his kindergarten class about his hero, his older brother. The camera then shows the older brother in his high school, putting a gun in his locker and dealing drugs. The message? "Everyone is somebody's hero. Be careful of the impact you have on the younger generation," Tuohy said. First-place winners from each category attended a three-day workshop with professional script writers and videographers to create a final video and public service announcements to be used by Toronto police officers in high schools next year. Students Commission, a charitable organization, guided the youth-driven project. The goal of the project: to get at-risk youth involved in positive activities, as well as to break down barriers between youth and police and authority figures, said Toronto police Const. Michelle Van Dam of the services' community mobilization unit, youth services branch. "It's thought provoking, out of the box," Van Dam said. "We're really trying to get young people thinking and talking about making the right choices, how the choices you make impact the rest of your life. Make a wrong choice, you could be badly hurt or end up dead."

Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School Welcomes a Special Visitor By Stephanie Bewski

On Monday, February 27, 2006 our school, Josyf Cardinal Slipyj was honoured with a visit from His Excellency Bishop Hlib Lonchyna. He is the Apostolic Visitator for Ukrainian Greek Catholics in Italy and was visiting Toronto. On his last day in our city, he was invited to visit our school, meet the students in their classroom and be entertained with a concert and a presentation commemorating the lives of Metropolitan Andrej Sheptyt’skyj and Patriarch Josyf Slipyj – our school patron.

Also, present at the concert were Bishop Stephan Chmilar, Very Reverend Dr. Fr. Roman Lobay, Kevin Kobus, the Director of Education, Les Nemes, the Deputy Director, Paul Crawford, Superintendent of Education and many other administrators from the Board as well as clergy from other schools.

The concert, performed by students in various grades, included a presentation of the difficult, but inspirational lives of both Metropolitan Andrej and Cardinal Slipyj. The school choir and the school orchestra played and sang medley of secular and religious music. The concert concluded with a presentation by the Student Council to His Excellency Bishop Hlib with a donation in the amount of $500 to be used towards the orphan children in Ukraine.

The festivities continued with a reception in the library. Bishop Hlib was very touched and moved by all the effort put forth on the part of our school community.

St. Brendan

Staff, students and parents of St. Brendan are very excited to share their good news. In June, 2005 the school held its 2nd Annual Run-a-thon dedicated to Taylor Gordon, a special needs student who passed away in December. The funds raised went to Nur Abadi (Special Needs School in Jakarta, Indonesia). With tremendous support from the students, parents and staff, St. Brendan raised $15,000.00!!! Sister Gerardette Philips, Sacred Heart of Jesus, was the inspiring connection between St. Brendan and Nur Abadi. As a special envoy from the Vatican, Sister Gerardettes’ role is to encourage and build interfaith relationships.

Sister Gerardette was deeply moved by the students’ efforts and was able to share her sentiments during her audience with His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. The school was honoured to receive a letter and a Papal Blessing from His Holiness acknowledging the difference St. Brendan students had made in the lives of the less fortunate children of Nur Abadi.

In May of this year, St. Brendan held its 3rd Annual Charity Run-a- thon. The excitement of helping others dominated the hallways of St. Brendan during the month of May. Students had collected pledges in the hopes of supporting the building of a school for 300 needy children through Free the Children – Togo project. A very enterprising JK student, Talia, even had a lemonade stand at her home-- Talia raised $648.00!

The buzz about the Run-a-thon began with a rally on May 15 with Toronto Argonaut, Clifford Ivory, who came to the school and talked about the importance of doing things for others and making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than themselves. His speech was very motivating and the students were inspired by his message. Teachers further challenged students to beat last years’ grand total with the promise of shaving their heads if they raised more than $15,000.00.

On May 19th Carlton, the Toronto Maple Leaf mascot, came to the school to help out!! Carlton led the way for our Junior and Senior Kindergarten students. He also helped to draw names giving some lucky students the opportunity to throw pies at some of their favourite teachers. As well, in the spirit of generosity, Mr. Reilly, Mr. Biskupski and St. Brendan Principal, Dan Koenig had their heads SHAVED. In total, students collected $17,130.00 for Free the Children—Togo project.

Over the past three years, St. Brendan Catholic School has raised $44,863.00 – for various charities. Congratulations!!!!!!

TCDSB’s Pasiklaban sa Pagtula 2006: A Celebration of Filipino Culture Jodelyn Huang

It was a Filipino Language Day celebration when hundreds of Filipino children and parents flocked to St. Barnabas Catholic School to watch their children recite Filipino poetry such as “Ang Kalesa, “Ako ay Pilipino; sing popular Filipino songs “sitsiritsit”, and dance to the tune of “Ang Bulaklak” or “Ako’y Pinoy”.

What made the Filipino poetry contest special is the fact that those competing for the much-coveted award of “Makata ng Taon (Poet of the Year) 2006” are Filipino Canadian students who are just beginning to learn their native language, since many are born here or have migrated to Canada when they were very young. These contestants prepared for months to recite Filipino poems, and even with great preparation, one can still hear the “slang” pronunciation of Filipino words. The audience was very understanding, supportive and encouraging. As one parent said, “learning a language even if it’s your native language is hard, especially if you grew up in Canada. Somehow you tend to lose it; that’s why I salute these kids who are doing their best to learn it.”

Philippine Consul General of Toronto, Alejandro Mosquera graced the affair and showed his all-out support to the Filipino community by staying throughout the program and obliging to parents and students requests for photo memento with their beloved ConGen.

All contestants went home winners. Each received a trophy with various titles both in Primary and Intermediate Divisions, namely: 1st place- Makata ng Taon 2006; 2nd place – Balagtas Award; 3rd Place-Makata de obras; 4th place – Prinsipe/Prinsesa ng Tulaan. A trophy was also awarded to a group rendered poetry, “Grupong Tulaan”. The contestants came from five different Filipino International Languages classes offere in six Toronto Catholic District School Board elementary schools: St. Barnabas, St. Brendan, St. Barbara, St. Maria Goretti, Canadian Martyrs and Holy Family.
