OFFICIAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF STATE CANVASSERS

PRIMARY ELECTION MAY 12, 2020

Compiled by

Robert B. Evnen Nebraska Secretary of State

STATE OF NEBRASKA ______

OFFICE OF SECRETARY OF STATE ______

This is the 53rd Edition of the Primary Election Canvass Book that has been published in this state, and it is my first serving as Nebraska’s 27th Secretary of State and Chief Elections Official. The May 12, 2020, primary was historic in a number of respects. More Nebraskans voted in our 2020 primary election than in any other primary election in the history of our state. There were 492,580 Nebraskans who voted in our primary election. This broke the previous record of 413,015, which was set in 1972. What makes this turnout even more remarkable is that Nebraska voters broke the record in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. An unprecedented number of voters chose to vote early. More than 383,000 Nebraskans voted in this manner. They were joined by the more than 31,000 voters who cast their ballots in precincts that conducted their elections exclusively by mail. By comparison in the 2016 presidential primary and again in the 2018 primary, about 60,000 voted early. On Election Day, every precinct opened on time and over 76,000 Nebraskans voted at their polling site. A number of measures were taken to assure the safety of voters and poll workers. I am very grateful to the more than 4,000 poll workers who kept Nebraska’s polls open. I want to acknowledge the poll workers who returned to service in this primary, the many new workers who stepped up and served for the first time, and the members of the Nebraska National Guard who volunteered to serve as emergency poll workers if the need arose. Although a number of other states moved the date of their primaries, Nebraska did not move the primary election from the statutorily required date. The success of our primary election was the result of the efforts of our Nebraska voters, our County Clerks and Election Commissioners and their staff members, and the Secretary of State’s Elections Division team headed by Deputy Secretary of State Wayne Bena. Nebraska Voters refused to allow the coronavirus pandemic to prevent them from exercising their right to vote. I am very proud to be a Nebraskan every day, and especially so at this moment as we certify the 2020 Primary Election. Sincerely,

Robert B. Evnen, Secretary of State
