Pastor Reflection Holy Triduum Catechesis M Part II Good Friday The day begins with Morning Prayer at 8:30 A.M. The church will be open for silent prayer during the day. We will celebrate the at 3:00 P.M. In the evening at 7:00 P.M., we will gather together to solemnly com- memorate the passion and death of our Lord. We begin in silence and listen to the Scriptures that focus on Christ, the suffering Servant of God. In the Passion according to John, we relive the final hours of Jesus’ life. His painful death on the cross is the climax of a life of obedient service to the Kingdom of God. Jesus is the “new Adam”, who by his faithfulness has reconciled humanity’s relationship with God, broken by our first parents’ disobedience. Throughout the there is a sense of glory, for we see in the cross today the light of our deliver- ance shining through the agonizing way of the cross. In what is one of the most ancient forms of the Prayers of the Faithful we will pray for the needs of our church and our world, trusting that the redemptive love of Christ can transform all things. The liturgy on Good Friday reaches a high point as the congregation is invited to come forward and venerate the cross in whatever manner they desire. For example, some may choose to kiss the cross, or bow before the cross, genuflect or touch the cross reverently. It is an opportunity to personally connect our individual crosses with the cross of Jesus, to rede- fine the meaning of our own suffering in the light of his passion. Although no Masses are permitted to be celebrated on Good Friday, the Church gives the faithful the opportunity to receive Holy Communion from hosts consecrated the night before at the of the Lord's Supper. After sharing in Holy Communion, we take our leave in silence to await the great Vigil for the and the crucifixion he endured is not the entire story of our redemption. The Mystery of our salvation is fulfilled with the resurrection of Christ. Vigil Throughout the world on there are no Masses celebrated during the day. There will be a prayer service at 8:30 A.M. It is a day when we keep vigil, pondering the mystery of Christ’s life, passion, and death, and await to hear the good news of Easter. It is only as evening falls that the Church gathers in darkness for the solemn . The Vigil Liturgy is composed of four parts: The Service of Light; The Liturgy of the Word; The Liturgy of Bap- tism; and The Liturgy of the . Our community will gather outside at 7:00 P.M. where a fire will be ignited and blessed. From this fire, the Paschal Candle will be lit. Our community will then walk through the darkness together following the light of Christ, entering through the church as gradually the light of Christ spreads throughout the as- sembly. Once the Paschal Candle has been placed in the sanctuary, the beautiful ancient chant, the Exultet, or Easter Proclamation, will be sung recalling the won- der and mystery of this holy night. We will hear the words, “Most blessed of all nights, chosen by God to see Christ rising from the dead.” In the second part of the liturgy, we will listen to the Scriptures recalling the mighty deeds of God that have led to this holy night. This is the story of our faith, our Christian heritage, our past and our future. The Liturgy of the Word reaches a climax with the singing of the and the proclamation of the Easter . Following the Liturgy of the Word, we direct our attention toward our temporary . The presider invokes the power of the Holy Spirit to come down upon the waters of our font, so that through this water, the Church might be reborn. At this point, our community, with lit candles in hand, will renew our baptismal vows. We see ourselves anew as God's holy people, the Church. In the final part of the Vigil Liturgy, we celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter. The Church is not the cult of a dead man, but faithful disciples of the living Christ, who this night shares with us his Body and Blood. Like the disci- ples at Emmaus, we discover the Risen Christ in the breaking of the bread. We find ourselves seated at heaven’s table, a foretaste of what awaits us in the life to come. Please come and join us in prayer. Fr. Robert

Thank you to all for your unwavering “hands-on” assistance with our recent Lenten Parish Mission, especially: To Fr. Robert, for your enthusiasm as our theme was developed and details were set; To my Co-chair Chris Epstein, for your attention to detail and assistance with all aspects great and small; To Sue Canzoneri and our school staff, for extending a warm welcome and adjusting after school routines to accommodate early set-up of our Providence Hall for our Pasta Dinner, and to our Maintenance Dept., for their efforts and assurance that heat would be on for our event; To my fellow Parish Council members, who assisted with the set-up and clean-up of Providence Hall and to Michael & Phil, who both spoke so eloquently of their family and parish experiences in their witness talks; To Rachel Jalloway, for her heartfelt words expressed in her witness talk; To our readers, music ministers and those who offered childcare assistance (so that parents could attend our Mission), your participation made all the difference; To my friends from our St. Joseph Table Committee, who graciously served our Pasta Dinner; To our Girl Scouts and their leaders, for serving as greeters and welcoming our dinner guests; and finally, to our Parish Staff, for coordinating our publicity and many “behind-the- scenes” tasks. Truly, it takes a village to make a parish family. With appreciation, Nancy Kremer

Multi-Parish Lenten Mission

Whether you attended one evening of our Mission, or were present for all 3 presentations, we thank all those from our IC community, as well as our guests from our neighboring parishes (including, but not limited to, St. Eugene & St. Monica) who opened their hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit and gathered together with us to experience this special Lenten opportunity to renew & enhance our faith. We truly hope our Mission enriched the spiritual lives of all in attendance. We also extend our thanks to our guest presenter, Rev. Richard Fragomeni, for his inspiring presence and humorous anecdotes as our spiritual guide, as we collectively explored encountering Jesus in our families, in our parish and in our world. Finally, on behalf of both our Parish Staff and our Parish Council, we would like to take a moment to express our heart- felt appreciation to Nancy Kremer, our Lenten Mission Coordinator, for her tireless work be- hind the scenes organizing every aspect of our Mission and for successfully bringing it to life with help from her friends. We are truly thankful to Nancy for always serving our parish fami- ly with a humble and generous heart. We also join her in thanking the members of her team who kindly assisted her along the way. Whatever role you played in our Lenten Mission, how- ever big or small, know that your efforts were truly appreciated by one and all as it truly was a beautiful, defining event in the life of our parish.
