The Municipality of Londrina is located in the northern region of the State of Paraná, and is inserted in the Atlantic Forest Biome, which is considered a biodiversity hotspot for world conservation. This biome suffers from the loss of natural areas mainly due to urbanization, agriculture and livestock farming. Therefore, it is imperative to improve the knowledge of species occurring in the region for their efficient conservation. Due to its large area and lack of herpetological studies, most of the northern region of the state of Paraná presents gaps in snake records. The present study aims to review the records of snake species for the municipality of Londrina based on the literature and specimens deposited in scientific collections. Thirty-two (32) snake species were reported, belonging to the families Anomalepididae (1), Boidae (1), Colubridae (4), Dipsadidae (18), Elapidae (2), Typhlopidae (1) and Viperidae (5). In addition, we present an artificial key to the identification of the reported species. Keywords. The Brazilian Atlantic Forest in the state of Forest biome (IBGE, 2004), considered a hotspot for Paraná is divided into three ecoregions: Alto Paraná its high biological richness and deforesting, also being Atlantic forests, Araucaria moist forests and Serra do one of the 36 most relevant areas for biodiversity Mar coastal forests (Dinerstein et al, 2017). In this area, the Atlantic Forest belongs to the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest ecoregion (Dinerstein et al. 2017), and is characterized by its subtropical climate, a high annual temperature range (16–22 °C). In its southernmost portion, hoarfrosts are common during the winter (from June to August), notably in higher elevations (Di Bitetti et al., 2003). The precipitation in this ecoregion ranges from 1,000 to 2,200 mm per year, being generally lower in its northernmost region. Rains are not evenly distributed throughout the year, with drought periods up to five months, usually during the winter. The prevailing vegetation is Seasonal Semideciduous Forests (Di Figure 1. Our study resulted in a total of 32 snakes species from 20 genera and seven families recorded to the municipality of Londrina (Fig. 3 –4; Table 1), and we present an artificial dichotomic key to the identification of such species (Appendix 2). The cluster analysis (cophenetic correlation coefficient = 0.8391), was employed based on 78 snakes species recorded in 13 localities and resulted in two clusters (Fig. 5): Cluster 1 – Divided into two main subgroups: the first, composed by Paranaense Forest (municipality of Londrina), and the second, by the Araucaria Forest (municipalities of Curitiba, Pinhão, Piraquara, and Tijucas do Sul.) Contents: The genus WagZerophis - The genus Xeno don - The genus XenophoZis - References. THE GENUS wAGLEROPHIS ROMANO & HOGE, 1972 This genus contains only one species. Prior to 1972 this species was known as Xenodon merremii (Wagler, 1824). This species is found in Surinam. General data for the genus: Head: The head is short and slightly flattened. The strong neck is only marginally narrower than the head. The relatively large eyes have round pupils. Body: Short and stout with smooth scales. The scales have one apical groove. The formation of the dorsal scales is characteristic for this genus. These are arranged so that the upper rows are at an angle to the lower ones (see figure 1) . Tail: Short. Behaviour: Terrestrial and both nocturnal and di urnal. Food: Frogs, toads, lizards and sometimes snakes, insects or small mammals. Habitat: Damp forest floors near swamps or water. Reproduction: Oviparous. Remarks: When threatened or disturbed, the fore part of the body is inflated and the neck is spread in a cobra-like fashion. The head is al· so raised slightly, but not as high and as 181 Fig. 1. Dorsal scale pattern of Waglerophis. From: Peters & Orejas-Miranda, 1970. vertically as a cobra. This is an aggressive snake which will invariably resort to biting if the warning behaviour described above is not heeded. This genus (in common with the genera Xenodon, Heterodon and Lystrophis) has two enlarged teeth attached to the back of the upper jaw.

  • Lora Snake (Philodryas Olfersii) Venom
Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical 39(2):193-197, mar-abr, 2006 ARTIGO/ARTICLE Experimental ophitoxemia produced by the opisthoglyphous lora snake (Philodryas olfersii) venom Ofitoxemia experimental produzida pelo veneno da serpente opistoglifa lora (Philodryas olfersii) Alexis Rodríguez-Acosta1, Karel Lemoine1, Luis Navarrete1, María E. Girón1 and Irma Aguilar1 ABSTRACT Several colubrid snakes produce venomous oral secretions. In this work, the venom collected from Venezuelan opisthoglyphous (rear-fanged) Philodryas olfersii snake was studied. Different proteins were present in its venom and they were characterized by 20% SDS-PAGE protein electrophoresis. The secretion exhibited proteolytic (gelatinase) activity, which was partially purified on a chromatography ionic exchange mono Q2 column. Additionally, the haemorrhagic activity of Philodryas olfersii venom on chicken embryos, mouse skin and peritoneum was demonstrated. Neurotoxic symptoms were demonstrated in mice inoculated with Philodryas olfersii venom. In conclusion, Philodryas olfersii venom showed proteolytic, haemorrhagic, and neurotoxic activities, thus increasing the interest in the high toxic action of Philodryas venom. Key-words: Colubridae. Haemorrhage. Neurotoxic. Philodryas olfersii. Proteolytic activity. Venom.

Welcome to the Ornithological Congress of the Americas! Puerto Iguazú, Misiones, Argentina, from 8–11 August, 2017 Puerto Iguazú is located in the heart of the interior Atlantic Forest and is the portal to the Iguazú Falls, one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area surrounding Puerto Iguazú, the province of Misiones and neighboring regions of Paraguay and Brazil offers many scenic attractions and natural areas such as Iguazú National Park, and provides unique opportunities for birdwatching. Over 500 species have been recorded, including many Atlantic Forest endemics like the Blue Manakin (Chiroxiphia caudata), the emblem of our congress. This is the first meeting collaboratively organized by the Association of Field Ornithologists, Sociedade Brasileira de Ornitologia and Aves Argentinas, and promises to be an outstanding professional experience for both students and researchers. The congress will feature workshops, symposia, over 400 scientific presentations, 7 internationally renowned plenary speakers, and a celebration of 100 years of Aves Argentinas! Despite recent advances, prey ingestion position being head-first (Teixeira and detailed information on feeding ecology is still scarce, Vrcibradic, 2003; Drummond et al., 2010). particularly for many species of the rich snake fauna Here we report four interesting findings that came of the Neotropics (e.g., Marques and Sazima, 1997; from the examination of a single specimen of Clelia Hartmann and Marques, 2005; Gaiarsa et al., 2013; plumbea housed in a scientific collection: (1) two new Roberto and Souza, 2020).
