MS 2002/22 Brickell, Barry

Introduction: The eldest of Shirley and Maurice Brickell’s four children, Ian Barry Brickell was born 26th Oct 1935 at New Plymouth. Commonly known as Barry, he was educated in and graduated from Auckland University with a Bachelor of Science (BSc). In 1961 Barry started teaching in Coromandel District High School. However, within six months he resigned and took up pottery as a full time career.

Barry developed Driving Creek Pottery in Coromandel with workshops and kilns where he and other potters worked. A rail and steam enthusiast, he built a railway on the property, using it to retrieve exotic timber, transporting native seedlings for reforestation and clay for use in his pottery. In his 1979 curriculum vitae, Barry lists his interests - ‘fire, steam, simple and basic machinery, botany (in particular NZ natives), landscape forms, geology, visual arts, civil engineering, railways, colonial and functional architecture and the form of things’.

This collection of papers illustrates Barry Brickell’s contributions to New Zealand’s studio pottery movement over three decades (1960s-1980s). It contains correspondence from a number of significant artists such as and Theo Schoon and a postcard from Friedensreich Hundertwasser. In addition, the collection also includes correspondence, photographs and drawings reflecting Brickell’s love of steam and railways.

The Copyright Council states that ‘Copyright in literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works continues for 50 years after the end of the calendar year in which the author died’ (http://www.copyright.org.nz/basics.php). Consequently it is assumed that the copyright of all letters within this collection are held by the letter writer. While a large percentage of the correspondents are still living, copyright of deceased persons will have become part of the deceased’s estate.

Scope of collection: The collection contains considerable material relating to studio potters and pottery (1965-1985), art/craft galleries, and significant artisans such as Ralph Hotere and Theo Schoon who writes of

potters such as , commenting on techniques and personal discoveries. Others write about clays, glazes and kiln construction. Barry’s passion for steam and rail are also represented with correspondence between fellow steam/railway enthusiasts. The letters illustrating deep friendships that developed over the years are intermingled with fledgling relationships between potters wishing to visit and work at Driving Creek.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged into six series: Series 1 Correspondence – General Predominantly inward letters and associated papers from friends, business colleagues, fellow rail enthusiasts, potters, dealer galleries etc. Arranged by year/s Series 2 Correspondence and sundry papers – topic Predominantly inward letters and associated papers from friends, business colleagues, fellow rail enthusiasts, potters, dealer galleries etc. Series 3 Newsletters Predominantly newsletters with occasional AGM Meeting papers and letters reflecting Brickell’s wide range of interests. Series 4 Sundry papers A collection of sundry papers including manuscripts, notes, ephemera, publications etc. Also one photograph album. Series 5 Photographs A brief description of photographs and slides. The collection require flattening and cleaning followed by a full arrangement and description. Series 6 Finances A collection of Brickell’s invoice books for goods and services despatched. Also sundry vouchers, invoices and receipts for goods and services received. The latter still bear clay dust and require cleaning. Series 7 Clippings A collection of clippings and pages from newspapers reflecting Barry Brickell’s range of interests

Processing notes: Work began 22nd February 2010. The collection was unpacked from its original boxing. Many papers were dusty with deposits of clay on them. These have been gently bushed and dusted but when disturbed the collection continues to shed clay dust. Complete removal of clay requires the expertise of a paper conservator. In the mean time, the collection has been re-housed into acid free folders. File description focuses on the name of the letter writer, their location and very occasionally letter contents. Time constraints prevented close examination of each letter. Instead a sampling of letter writers has been identified within each file and as a result, personal and business names can be tracked throughout the collection. The initially arrangement was developed in a contract that terminated in February 2010. The description was completed during a further contract in Feb 2011.
