Show a little R.E.S.P.E.C.T for ARETHA FRANKLIN

Toronto – Tuesday, April 5, 2011 ~ The legendary queen of soul, Aretha Franklin will kick off the 25th edition of the TD Festival with a FREE concert on Friday, June 24 at Metro Square.

For more than 50 years, Franklin has been a powerhouse vocalist rightfully claiming her place in music history. As the undisputed greatest female soul singer ever, the passion and intensity of her music has never failed to move listeners. From soul and gospel beginnings to the civil rights movement to American pop music as a whole, Franklin’s illustrious and storied career has been unchallenged thus far – 21 Grammy’s; the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; and more Top Forty singles than any other female performer (forty-five in all since 1961). Now that calls for a little respect.

The party continues into the night as the Festival transforms the neighbourhood into an outdoor concert stage. Bands will play the clubs and patios under the stars for what is sure to be the Festival’s most intimate concert series to date. And best of all, this party is completely free.

The 2011 TD Toronto Jazz Festival is sure to be bigger and better this year with 350 concerts, 1,500 musicians, 40 locations and 500,000 people all jammed into 10 eventful days. FOUR PIANO TITANS ONE GRANDMASTERS SERIES Randy Weston, Jacky Terrasson, Vijay Iyer and Kenny Barron

Toronto – Tuesday, April 5, 2011 ~ Whether it is African rhythms or experimental sounds, a lyrical adaptive style or a feathery keyboard touch , the GRANDMASTERS Series features four distinct solo players who are at the top of their game, all at the Glenn Gould Studio.

Randy Weston (Sunday, June 26) Inspired by Africa, this is the core of Weston’s music and spirituality. He has spent a lifetime traversing the continent on a continuous journey to learn about its musical traditions. Weston’s African Rhythms solo piano traces the roots of jazz back to where it all began.

Jacky Terrasson (Monday, June 27) – A gifted arranger with a complete understanding of the blues and improvisation, The Times calls his work, “brightly energetic, pristinely articulated pianism.”

Vijay Iyer (Tuesday, June 28) – Hailed as one of the most important pianists today, Iyer is a self taught musician who draws from a wide range of Western and non- Western traditions. With each and every recording, Iyer forges a new bold sound that consistently staggers the imagination.

Kenny Barron (Wednesday, June 29) – As a soloist, leader and one of the most dependable sidemen in all of post-bop mainstream modern jazz, Barron’s career spans over five decades and he is universally recognized as the master of performance and composition.

The Glenn Gould Studio is located at 250 Front St. W. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster 1.855.985.5000 or www.ticketmaster.ca.

The GRANDMASTERS Series is supported by media sponsors Toronto Star & JAZZ.FM91.

JAZZ 101 School is not out for Summer

Toronto – Tuesday, April 5, 2011 ~ Heading back to school this summer, the TD Toronto Jazz Festival is exploring the educational side of jazz. With some exciting new initiatives and few Festival favourites, this summer’s programming will include workshops, master classes, post-secondary outreach and a little bit of graffiti.

The TDJ News Corps is a brand new program geared towards post-secondary students in journalism, art criticism and musicology. Students in the News Corps will gain hands-on experience in their chosen field of study – writing reviews and interviews, meeting veteran journalists and learning from the best through mentorship. With full media accreditation, these students will be granted unprecedented access to the festival, attending selected concerts for free and experiencing all the behind-the-scenes excitement.

The Slam invites four Toronto District School Board high school big bands to perform at The Rex on weekday afternoons during the Festival. Although not a competition, the series will feature guest moderators who will provide comments and tips for each ensemble.

The Youth Jazz Showcase gives some exceptional young musicians the chance to show it all off at The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar. This year, the Showcase will feature performances by the Youth Jazz in the City combo, Sapporo Jazz Festival competition winners all the way from Japan, and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute.

Jazz for the Teach is a one-day, three-hour seminar led by high school teachers for high school teachers. Seminar leaders are also seasoned jazz performers offering advice and expertise to enhance school jazz programs and jazz curriculum for those in attendance.

Groove & Graffiti is a two-day workshop for local area high schools where students are taught the history, relevance and unique expressions of graffiti used within the proper context. Now in its 8th year, Groove & Graf creatively combines the inspirational side of art and the inspiration (and improvisational) side of jazz. Generously sponsored by TD, this program is led by top local aerosol artists Elicser and Mediah, offering educational and instructional components while giving students the opportunity to create their own canvas. The top four students are invited to a Groove & Graffiti showcase on Canada Day at Metro Square.

The 2011 TD Toronto Jazz Festival is sure to be bigger and better this year with 350 concerts, 1,500 musicians, 40 locations and 500,000 people all jammed into 10 eventful days. Do not miss the chance to listen to local, national and international talent playing a diverse range of genres in the heart of the city, The Entertainment District. A LOOK BACK AT 25 YEARS OF JAZZ

Toronto – Tuesday, April 5, 2011 ~ From its inaugural year in 1987 with just three venues to now being the largest music festival in the city, the TD Toronto Jazz Festival looks back and highlights some of its greatest memories and artists.

1987 The first Downtown Jazz Festival took place at only three venues – Roy Thompson Hall, the CN Tower and the Metro Convention Centre. Originally created as a co-production between Roy Thomson Hall and du Maurier Ltd., the festival was placed under the direction of Patrick Taylor (Executive Producer) and Jim Galloway (Artistic Director). Three powerhouses that year kicked off the inaugural event. A double billing preview concert by Roberta Flack and Miles Davis got things warmed up while Tony Bennett opened the festival. Free programming across the city included establishments that have long since closed while some still remain. Garbo’s Restaurant, Meyers Deli, George’s Spaghetti House, The Bamboo and The Horseshoe were just some that played host to the jazz festival. Other artists performing that year included Paquito D’Rivera, Stan Getz, Michael Brecker and .

1988 Capitalizing on the success of the previous year, the second anniversary of the Downtown Jazz Festival grew to incorporate more artists performing in more venues across the city. Harbourfront Centre, Nathan Phillips Square, the CITY TV parking lot, and Yorkville were just some of the new additions. While the program included heavyweights such as Oscar Peterson, Gary Burton, Wynton Marsalis, and Dizzy Gillespie, an up and coming vocalist was making her debut at a local venue. For two nights Diana Krall performed at George’s Spaghetti House.

1989 The third annual Downtown Jazz Festival saw the creation of the Jazz Buzz, a red double-decker bus that provided free transportation to access downtown venues, which expanded to include over 20 restaurants, bars and stages. Programming grew to include more free concerts and the addition of a new series and stage called Jazz - Front & Centre, located in Berczy Park, at Front and Church Street. The Shuffle Demons and Magnolia Brass Band were just some of the groups who played there. Other memorable performances throughout the festival included Sun Ra Arkestra, Branford Marsalis playing with his dad, Ellis Marsalis, the Randy Weston Trio, Sarah Vaughan and the introduction of relative newcomer at the time - Harry Connick Jr. at The Diamond.

1990 The start of a new decade saw the fourth festival open with the reunion of Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass. Jazz clinics, films and workshops were added to enhance the growing popularity of the festival. One memorable highlight from that year was a performance by McCoy Tyner, Astrud Gilberto and Ernestine Anderson in Berczy Park. It drew such a large crowd that many spilled out onto Front and Wellington Street creating a traffic nightmare. It was then that the festival knew it had grown too big for that location. Other performances that year included Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette.

1991 The festival expanded its activities once again, offering more than 40 venues across the city with jazz programming. A 24-hour jazz hotline was created to access up-to-date information and meet growing demands. This was also the year that the festival officially became a non-profit organization and the Toronto Downtown Jazz Society was formally created. Jazz stalwarts Miles Davis, Cab Calloway and Rosemary Clooney were just some of the artists headlining the festival that year alongside , Trio, Russ Little and .

1992 The sixth anniversary of the festival, included for the first time, late night jam sessions from 1am to 4am. The Johnny Griffin Quartet burned up the stage at Nathan Phillips Square that year, as did Arturo Sandoval and Dick Hyman. Abdullah Ibrahim, Diane Schuur and were some of the other memorable performances, as well as a spectacular show put on by the The Youth Outreach Mass Choir with Hezekiah Walker and The Love Fellowship Crusade Choir. A record breaking capacity crowd was present that afternoon, swaying in rhythm with hands in the air at the first ever gospel concert.

1993 Showcasing more than 1,000 artists, the seventh annual Festival expanded to include free daily performances, free workshops and films, gala ticketed concerts, jazz cruises, street musicians, subway performances, mall displays with live jazz plus 34 nightclubs, hotels, and special venues programming jazz during the festival. While that year was dedicated to the memory of Dizzy Gillespie, tenor great Sonny Rollins was making new memories as he brought the crowd to its feet at the Harbourfront Centre. Roy Hargrove, Randy Weston, Dr. John, Kenny Garrett, John Scofield, and Mulgrew Miller also delivered great performances.

1994 Over 10 days, from June 24 to July 3, a huge tent was erected in the heart of the city at Nathan Phillips Square to present three concerts daily. Those who graced that inaugural stage included Doc Cheatham All-Stars, and Boss Brass while others such as Roy Hargrove, Pharoah Sanders, Bill Frisell, and Preservation Hall Jazz Band played throughout the city.

1995 This was the year the festival paid tribute to great jazz vocalists of the past, present and future. Betty Carter, Joe Williams, Cassandra Wilson, Diane Schuur and Yvonne Jackson were all on hand to perform at the ninth anniversary, attracting more than 600,000 people. Loonie Tunes was introduced that year, where concertgoers could hear Dave Holland, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and Boss Brass for only a dollar. Other performers that year included Rite of Strings, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, JJ Johnson and Oliver Jones. From soulful blues to inspiring gospel music, rhythmic African and Latin beats to sensational vocalists, 1995 provided a smorgasbord of musical delights.

1996 Beginning with just a handful of artists playing at three venues in 1987, the tenth anniversary of the festival presented over 2,600 performers in 62 venues across the city. A huge street dance took over the Entertainment District at King and John Streets during the closing weekend of the festival and a special celebration in the Yorkville Quarter helped cap off ten years of producing one of North America’s premiere international musical events. Maceo Parker, Dave Brubeck, Mavis Staples, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Garrett, Randy Weston, and John Scofield were all present as the festival drew close to a million people.

1997 This was the year that Irakere and Roy Hargrove’s Crisol tore up the stage during the eleventh edition of the festival. In addition to Loonie Tunes, Toonie Tunes concerts were a new feature where musicians like Norman Marshall Villeneuve and Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass could be heard for a two dollar admission fee. Dee Dee Bridgewater, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Lou Rawls, Lionel Hampton, Jean-Luc Ponty and Shirley Horn also headlined that year.

1998 The highlight of the festival that year was the standing ovation awarded to Oscar Peterson when he attended the performance of a big band arrangement of his Canadiana Suite, performed by the Ron Collier Orchestra. A duet by Toots Thielman and Kenny Werner was also memorable, as were performances by King Sunny Ade and a 3-piano night with the giants of Blues piano – Jay McShann, Junior Mance and Ray Bryant.

1999 The thirteenth edition of the festival began with the launch of the official website, a one-stop resource with daily updates, schedule information, bios and photos. More than 2,000 musicians performed at 59 different venues with over 700,000 fans in attendance during the ten-day event. McCoy Tyner, Roy Hargrove, Oliver Jones, Guido Basso, and Ernestine Anderson all performed that year.

2000 This was the year the festival almost never happened. With new legislation prohibiting tobacco sponsorship in the arts, the festival was faced with a sizeable shortfall in its budget. However, just two days after the cancellation announcement a last ditch effort by then mayor, Mel Lastman, revived the festival. Nathan Phillips Square became the official home of the festival in the new millennium. A 1,000 seat tent complete with a chandelier, corporate box seating, food and licensed beverage service and a 100-seat landscaped patio was constructed in the centre of the square. Free daily performances took place in the afternoon while the evenings were headline ticketed shows. Performers that year included Jean-Luc Ponty, Dianne Reeves, Al di Meola, John Scofield, Elvin Jones and Maceo Parker.

2001 The fifteenth edition of the festival celebrated the year of the trumpet in honour of the Centennial celebrations. Guido Basso, Terence Blanchard, Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis and Nicholas Payton were all on hand as attendance for that year reached an all-time high. A new addition in 2001 was the introduction of the Artisans’ Village featuring 40 of Canada’s premiere craftspeople, virtual artists and designers. Joshua Redman, Chick Corea, Dee Dee Bridgewater and a moving tribute to Moe Koffman were just some of the highlights that year.

2002 Nathan Phillips Square became the hub of the festival in 2002. A second stage was added on the Square offering more programming in the afternoons. A Louisiana BBQ during the final weekend capped off ten days of jazz that took place from noon until the wee hours with artists from over 14 different countries performing in 40 venues. Dave Holland, Dave Brubeck, Maynard Ferguson, Dr. John, Arturo Sandoval and Pat Martino all contributed to another successful festival.

2003 For ten days and twelve nights, the city was cookin’ as artists like Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Wayne Shorter, David Clayton-Thomas and the legendary Ray Charles performed at the seventeenth edition of the festival. Over 1,500 musicians entertained 400,000 jazz lovers, contributing over $21.4 million dollars to the economy, according to an Enigma Research study.

2004 TD Bank Group became title sponsor in 2004 and contributed financially to all Canadian jazz festivals coast-to-coast. Oscar Peterson kicked off the festival in a preview concert that also featured Oliver Jones, who came out of retirement to share this occasion with an old friend. Other memorable highlights included the first ever Midnight Swing Party that featured Big Bad Voodoo Daddy; George Benson’s guitar prowess at the Hummingbird Centre; and, of course, Michel Camilo burning up the stage with his Latin Jazz All-Stars. Wynton Marsalis blew the crowd away in an intimate performance inside the tent at Nathan Phillips Square, while the Blind Boys of Alabama, Bela Fleck, Gary Burton, and Rite of Strings also headlined that year.

2005 New to the nineteenth edition of the festival was the World Stage, reflecting the diverse evolution of jazz music around the globe with performances by artists from New Orleans, Africa, France, and Italy. Tenor giant, Sonny Rollins, graced the stage at Massey Hall while Canada’s jazz queen, Diana Krall, performed for two nights at the festival for the first time since her debut at George’s Spaghetti House back in 1988. The Real Divas, featuring an all-star cast of Canadian female vocalists, stole the festival, however, when they performed on Canada Day. , Arturo Sandoval, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett and the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band also performed that year.

2006 One of the most memorable highlights to the 20th anniversary of the Festival was the completely-sold-out-standing-room-only performance by the legendary Etta James. Not to be outdone, Maceo Parker tore the roof of the tent, playing during a torrential downpour. The tent was rockin’ and the tenor sax man proved to be one of the greatest hosts. A very special performance featuring Pharoah Sanders and Kenny Garrett capped off another great year that featured luminaries such as Paquito D’Rivera, McCoy Tyner, Christian McBride, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Marcus Miller, Charlie Hunter, Molly Johnson and the ever elegant Dave Brubeck.

2007 This was the year we introduced a precocious 13 year old whose talent belied her age. Shortly thereafter, Nikki Yanofsky would explode onto the world stage but the Festival is proud to say we had her first. The Festival kicked off with a very special Manteca reunion concert. Heavyweights such as Mavis Staples, Keith Jarrett, Joshua Redman, Herbie Hancock, , Medeski Martin & Wood, Roy Hargrove and Chris Botti also performed.

2008 The Minister of L.O.V.E, Al Green, kicked off the 22nd edition of the Festival with his trademark falsetto voice and classic hits, for which he received a 10- minute standing ovation. With a jam-packed schedule that featured more artists and venues than previous years, the Festival had something for everyone – from the piano titans of Oliver Jones and Ahmad Jamal, to the grandmaster of them all, Dave Brubeck. Bill Charlap and Sandy Stewart reigned supreme as the Cabaret Series while Charles Lloyd and Lizz Wright played to packed houses at their respective venues. Hundreds turned up to see vocal play group Naturally 7 perform in a free afternoon concert while Salif Keita, Blind Boys of Alabama and Dr. John took fans on a spiritual journey that will not soon be forgotten. For 10 days and 12 nights, the Festival had the city ablaze with the sounds of jazz.

2009 Whether it was Tony Bennett, Sharon Jones, Jamie Cullum or the legendary Kool & The Gang the Festival partied like it was 1999. Perhaps the biggest highlight, however, was the return of Pat Metheny almost 20 years since his last Festival appearance. Young artists also dominated the line-up with names such as Melody Gardot, Hiromi, Alice Russell, The Heavy, Madeleine Peyroux, Adam Brazier and Brandi Disterheft. Last but certainly not least, 2009 was the year the Shuffle Demons attempted to break a Guinness World Record on Canada Day for most saxophonists. They fell a few musicians short but, regardless, a great time was had by all.

2010 After 23 years at the helm, co-founder and Artistic Director Jim Galloway retired paving the way for our current AD, Josh Grossman. Reflecting this changing of the guard, the 24th edition of the Festival featured a younger, avant-garde, cutting edge line-up that blended perfectly with the stalwarts of jazz. From to Harry Connick, Jr., The Roots to Keith Jarrett, Tomasz Stanko to Angelique Kidjo, Herbie Hancock to Martha Wainwright we celebrated with 500,000 proving why it is the largest music festival in the city. And who could forget the biggest free party the Festival has ever seen? With just a few thousand of our closest friends we shut down Yonge-Dundas Square and surrounding area with a performance by the one and only and Macy Gray. You just had to be there!
