If anybody has any time to help out before, during or after the show we would much appreciate it. For you new Nobles you don’t have to belong to a unit or club to help. Just show up and we will find something for you to do. The Second Section hosted the 48th annual Potentates’ Party on February 4th at the Shrine Center. It was great to see the good turnout of Shriners and their guests to honor Illustrious Poten- tate Tony Bowers. There was a good showing of Divan members present as well as the Second Section members in their green dress jackets. Director Dulac was the MC for the evening and did a great job with the introductions of the 2012 Divan and Past Poten- tates in attendance. Once again, Lady Robyn Dulac designed the centerpiec- es for the table of a mug with a sticker replica of Potentate Bowers’ pin. Di- rector Dulac announced that the one person at each table with a birthday closest to our Potentate would be able to take the glass home. Great job on those Robyn, they were awesome. The meal of baked ham or turkey was put on by the Shrine Clowns and everyone I spoke to raved about the meal. Once again, the Clowns did a great job. The music was performed by Rockin’ Ron’s and by all accounts it was very well received as it looked like every- one had a great time dancing. Tip of the Fez to Past Potentate/ Recorder, Sonny Crocker for helping the unit sell tickets for the evening. Congratula- tions to Noble Harland Williamson for winning the 50/50 at the party. And lastly a big thank you goes out to those Second Section members who came in early on Sunday to clean up from the party. A good showing of members made the cleanup quicker and easier. As mentioned in last month’s Anah- gram the Second Section is selling Shrine tumblers with the Shrine logo, and the “Silent Messenger” pictured on them. We have two different sizes available. We have 14 oz. glasses in a set of four for $25.00, and a 12 oz. glasses in a set of four for $20.00. Noble Michael “Sid” Alley, Reporter By the time this comes out in print, our annual Family Valentines Dance will have come and gone. This event is a big one for us bikers. It’s always well attend- ed and the big kids have as much fun as the little ones. For many years the dance has been Coke and Jesse Giles baby. They are the daughter and granddaughter of Noble Paul Giles. They arranged ev- erything for us; collecting soda and door prizes as well as arranging for the DJ and the pizza and the list goes on. Sadly, at our last unit meeting on January18th, Coke announced that it was time for them to step aside and take a much deserved break. To say they will be missed is an understatement. Now it’s time for the bikers to put their big boy pants on and continue this unit tradition on our own. Thankfully, the ladies said they would be there for us should we need advice or a shoulder to cry on. So thank you ladies, As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way!! MARCH 2012 11

We will utilize our operating rooms to provide same-day (ambulatory) surgeries and procedures. We will attempt to increase its utilization so that our two operating rooms and one procedure room will be busy five (5) days a week. We will be closed evenings and weekends; 8. We will continue to handle surgeries requiring in-patient stays, but these will be provided at a nearby hospital, utilizing our surgeons and residents, and he other facility’s nursing staff;

By making these changes, we hope to be able to serve more children than we currently serve, with less financial reliance on the Shriners’ endowment.

These changes will not be easy, and the transition this proposed model will not happen overnight. The model will need to be approved by the Joint Boards in Tampa. The changes will need to be approved by the Common- wealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Some of the propos- als outlined above will require amendments to the Shriners’ Hospital Bylaws. Complex contractual arrangements will need to be negotiated with our strategic partners.

This is an exciting time for the Springfield Shriners Hospital as we embark on a new journey to serve children in our community. We all need to work together as a team if we are going to accomplish this amazing transition.

Sincerely,

David H. Burstein, Esq. Chairman
