I argue and test the hypothesis that female inheritance has historically had a posi- tive effect on in-marriage and a negative effect on female premarital relations and economic partic- ipation. In the second chapter, my co-authors and I provide evidence on the positive association of in-marriage and corruption. We also test the effect of family ties on nepotism in a bribery experi- ment. The third chapter presents my second joint paper on the consequences of kin networks. -

Rise of the Veil: Islamic Modernity and the Hui Woman Zainab Khalid SIT FALL 2011 5/1/2011 1 Introduction: Assimilation/Dissimilation The Hui are a familiar sight in most cities in China; famed for their qingzhen restaurants and their business acumen. Known usually as the “Chinese speaking Muslims,” they are separated from the nine other Muslim xiaoshu minzu by a reputation for assimilation and adaptability that is a matter of pride for Hui in urban areas. A conversation with Hui women at Nancheng Mosque in Kunming revealed that they believed Hui to be at an advantage compared to other xiaoshu minzu because of their abilities to adapt and assimilate, “we are intelligent; we know what to do in order to survive in any environment.” Yet, the Hui of Yunnan also have a history of dissimilation- the Panthay Rebellion of 1856 took the shape of a Sultanate in Dali as Hui forces led a province-wide revolt against the Qing Empire. -

The state was formed on November 1956 by combining various Malayalam speaking regions. From the early days Kerala is famous for trade, particularly for spices which attracted traders from different parts of the world. As per Sumerian records Kerala is referred as the ‘Garden of spices’ or ‘The spice garden of India’. The state has attracted Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Arabs, Greeks and Romans. Merchants from West Asia and Southern Europe established coastal ports and settlements in Kerala. Jewish connection with Kerala was started in the tenth Century B C. The Jews are an ethnic group who settled first in Muziris, the earliest seaport in Kerala which was known as ‘Little Jerusalem’. They came to Kerala during the period of King Solomon. It is believed that King Solomon had visited Kerala for trade purposes. From the very early days the country Kerala was known to the ancient Jews. In the 6th century BC the Jews came to Kodungaloor in order to escape from the Babylonian captivity of Nebuchednezzar. In 580 B C the Babylonian Empire conquered Yehudah (Judah), the Southern region of ancient Israel. After 50 years later, the Persian Empire (ancient Iran) conquered the Babylonian Empire and allowed the Jews to return home to the land of Israel. -

Between the symbolics of the dog in Chinese traditional and popular culture there is sometimes a significant difference, the dog as a symbol in phraseology can be classified mainly as an ambivalent symbol, in spite of the prevailing positive symbolics in various areas of traditional culture. Supplementary methods Estimation of TMRCA using BATWING The program Bayesian Analysis of Trees With Internal Node Generation (BATWING) (Wilson et al. 2003) was run using a model of a single population with a period of constant size followed by exponential growth. The BATWING run consisted of 700,000 sampled points, following 50,000 steps of warmup. The parameters Nbetasamp and Treebetn were set to 20 and 15, respectively. The results were qualitatively the same for a run half as long. The states of several SNPs were used to condition the genealogy. The SNPs considered were M91, M42, M60, M168, M96, M35, P143, M216, P14, M201, P123, M304, M9, M526, P326, M20, M184, M70, L131, PS21, P77, M214, M45, M242, M207, M267, M172, P321, and P322. To estimate the age of individual branches, the minimum time of the mutations defining a branch was extracted from the output of BATWING and the distribution of those times was used in downstream analyses. The distributions of ratios of branch ages were obtained analogously. These ratios were seen to be rather independent of the priors on effective size (data not shown). Median and mean values, and 95% confidence intervals were obtained for the age of the mutations (Tables 1 and 2). Method of estimating TMRCA using the distribution of SNPs in the genealogy Mutations ascertained in a single lineage were examined, determining their temporal distribution in the genealogy of haplogroup T. This distribution was used to calculate the likelihoods of the relative branching times within the genealogy, which can be converted into absolute times by the use of an appropriate calibration point. -

FELDMAN Abstract The Samaritans are a group of some 750 indigenous Middle Eastern people, about half of whom live in Holon, a suburb of Tel Aviv, and the other half near Nablus. The Samaritan population is believed to have numbered more than a million in late Roman times but less than 150 in 1917. The ancestry of the Samaritans has been subject to controversy from late Biblical times to the present. In this study, liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization/quad- rupole ion trap mass spectrometry was used to allelotype 13 Y-chromosomal and 15 autosomal microsatellites in a sample of 12 Samaritans chosen to have as low a level of relationship as possible, and 461 Jews and non-Jews. Estimation of genetic distances between the Samaritans and seven Jewish and three non-Jewish populations from Israel, as well as populations from Africa, Pakistan, Turkey, and Europe, revealed that the Samaritans were closely related to Cohanim. This result supports the position of the Samaritans that they are descendants from the tribes of Israel dating to before the Assyrian exile in 722–720 BCE. In concordance with previously published single-nucleotide polymorphism haplotypes, each Samaritan family, with the exception of the Samaritan Cohen lineage, was observed to carry a distinctive Y-chromosome short tandem repeat haplotype that was not more than one mutation removed from the six-marker Cohen modal haplotype. -
