Fc Nbmnk 2020 APRIL 2020 | ISSUE NO. 3 NA BULAGO MAI NA KORO FROM THE BISHOP OF POLYNESIA ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF POLYNESIA What's inside this issue: COVID 19 Pandemic Virus Mission & Outreach Schools: Developments Primates' Meeting Lotu Youth Mission Community House of Sarah Archbishop of York Visit Diocesan Thanksgiving Celebration Standing Committee Appointments Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ and Co-workers! Ni sa bula vinaka, Malo 'e lelei, Fafetai lava, Namaste and Greetings in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ. These past few weeks gone by have been quite a journey as the world comes to terms with the COVID 19 Coronavirus pandemic. As of April, Fiji has confirmed 5 COVID-19 cases, New Zealand with 1 recorded death due to COVID-19, and Tonga, Samoa and American Samoa although with nil cases, but joining the rest of the world in lockdown, it is important that our churches have obediently taken immediate action to ensure the safety of all people and to act as an example during the difficult months ahead. We acknowledge that some churches took pro-active measures two weeks ago to limit human to human contact within worship services and especially around the distribution of the Eucharist. For this we must be thankful for the wisdom shown by these churches, encourage them to continue and urge other faith communities to join the movement with their own preventive measures. In the midst of this, here we find an opportune time for the church to review its role as God’s hands in society by ministering to, providing and caring for the poor, sick and the aged – those most at risk from COVID-19. At the headquarters for the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia, The MAST, our staff have embarked on a journey, together with you all, uniting in prayer at 1pm (Fiji standard time) to pray for those infected with COVID19, for their families, for the medical staff and health workers who risk their lives to provide treatment and prevention, including public health officials, who, we hope, with God’s help, will be able to contain the spread of the virus and prevent potential grave social, economic and environmental consequences. Through unity, prayer and a life centred in Christ, we will prevail and help to build stronger, closer families and communities. Over the next few days leading up to Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter, our Diocese will be using virtual technology, in the form of social media as a platform to share the Good News messages to our people. Please do join us on our facebook page “Anglican Diocese of Polynesia” for these services. I conclude with the prayer offered by The Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Reverend Justin Welby, a prayer for all those affected by Coronavirus; Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy.Sustain and support the anxious,be with those who care for the sick, and lift up all who are brought low;that we may find comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. In this time of COVID-19, we pray: Help us, O God, that we might help each other. In the love of the Creator, in the name of the Healer,in the life of the Holy Spirit that is in all and with all, we pray. Amen. For All the Saints A Resource for the Commemorations of the Calendar Full Biography Version Volume 1 edited by Ken Booth revised edition © The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, 2015 i ii Preface to the 1996 Edition I am happy to commend this publication to the church. Our gratitude goes to so many for their painstaking work in compiling the material, most notably Ken Booth and Margaret Wood. Their investment in this project has been immense from the outset, as Ken’s introduction illustrates. a) Each commemoration includes a short biographical section, a “liturgical paragraph” suitable to be read out at a service, and the suggested Sentences, Prayers, and Readings for liturgical use. b) The Māori material was made available to the appropriate people in the respective tribal areas and not only were they checked by them but their approval was sought and obtained. The material may be the most straightforward source of information about both Māori and other commemorations from Aotearoa / New Zealand and the Pacific. c) The book effectively replaces The New Zealand Calendar 1980 in relation to the sections called (i) Saints’ Days and Other Commemorations (updated to fit the Calendar / Te Maramataka of A New Zealand Prayer Book – He Karakia Mihinare o Aotearoa, (ii) Sentences, Prayers and Readings for Other Special Days (updated to reflect the Prayer Book, page 13, these are formularies), and (iii) Sentences, Prayers and Readings for Various Occasions (see The New Zealand Calendar, pages 54-63, 90). For useful resources to replace the weekday and seasonal sections for Advent, Lent, and Eastertide from The New Zealand Calendar (pages 64-89), refer Ken Booth’s Advent to Easter (1992), The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia Liturgical Commission’s publication, From Ashes to Fire (1990), or other Anglican or ecumenical resources.
