CHAMPION ALMANZOR RETIRED DUBAWI COLT STEALS THE Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}--Darkova, by Maria=s SHOW AT ARQANA Mon), last year=s Cartier Champion 3-year-old colt, has been retired from racing, Sylvain Vidal, representative of part-owner Gerard Augustin-Normand, confirmed late on Sunday. AAfter consultations with Jean-Claude Rouget and the partners, we have come to the difficult decision to retire Almanzor,@ said Vidal. AWe came into the year with great hopes and expectations for a successful campaign culminating in glory in the [G1 Prix de l=]Arc de Triomphe. Unfortunately with the setback he has had, including the virus spread through the stable earlier this year, it is apparent that he would not be fit enough to challenge for the Arc this year.@ The winner of three of his four starts at two, including the Listed Grand Criterium de Bordeaux, Almanzor notched his first group win in the G3 Prix de Guiche last May. THREE IN A ROW FOR ARROGATE: GOOD IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH The Week in Review, by Bill Finley BLACKJACKCAT The problem with being Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) is that you can turn in a good effort in a Grade I race, get beaten by a talented horse, show improvement over your last start and it=s not nearly enough. Though second in Saturday=s GI TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar, Arrogate's performance was nonetheless a tremendous disappointment. Any suggestion to the contrary is an attempt to sugarcoat the obvious: right now, he=s just not the same horse. Arrogate threw in a clunker in the GII San Diego H. That was not the case in the Pacific Classic, as he finished second, beaten a half-length behind stablemate Collected (City Zip). Though he never seemed to level off or get comfortable, Arrogate showed enough determination and class to cut into the margin late and make a race out of it. Blackjackcat collared the pacesetter and had a narrow advantage at midstretch, but Vyjack found running room and closed stoutly to just miss. AWe gave him a nice break after his 3-year-old campaign, got a couple races in him at Santa Anita and finally settled on his best distance, which seems to be a flat mile,@ said winning trainer Mark Glatt. ALast year we were in contention to win some of the Derbies we tried, but at a mile and an eighth they were just a hair too far for him. With a little rest after that 3-year-old campaign he=s come back stronger and carries his weight better and he has proven me right.@ Del Mar=s stewards conducted an inquiry into the stretch run concerning bumping between Vyjack and third-place finisher Om (Munnings), but ruled the incident did not warrant a change of placings. A[The stewards] asked me if I was going to be second,@ said Om=s rider Gary Stevens. AI told them I can=t say I was, but I can=t say I wasn=t. Channel Maker made a big, wide move on the far turn and The Week in Review (cont. from p1) held on desperately late to capture the Breeders= S. at Collected=s victory was his fourth straight and he was coming Woodbine, the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. King and His Court, represented by two thirds of the winner=s ownership, completed the trifecta. An inquiry and several objections were lodged into the actions of the first two horses, but no change was made. The win is the first in this event for trainer Bill Mott. ADown the lane, he was just laying over a little bit when he switched to the lead and didn=t bother anybody as the inquiry showed,@ said winning rider Rafael Hernandez. AI think he=s a good horse, he=s been showing up every time he=s been running and we won so that=s good. People=s memories aren=t so short that Arrogate won=t be very well received when he goes off to stud. He is no longer the horse to beat in this year=s GI Breeders= Cup Classic any more. Gun Runner is. Arrogate deserved a shot to show that he was back, that the San Diego H. was a fluke. Unfortunately, there was no redemption in the Pacific Classic, no answers to the mysteries that surround this horse.

O-Rancho San Antonio; B-Gelfenstein Farm (FL); T-Juan Jimenez & Eugenio Deschamps. *Ch. Imp. 2yo Filly-DR. **$8,000 2yo >16 OBSJUN. ***Owned by Dr. Angel Conteras=s Rancho San Antonio, Appassionata was trying 10 furlongs and older horses for the first time in her career and stumbled at the break before racing as many as eight lengths off the second-last runner for the opening six furlongs. She began to catch the eye on the turn, split rivals under a full head of steam in upper stretch beneath jockey Hector Hernandez, dove to the inside at the eighth pole and was along for the victory (video), her 11th from as many trips to the post. The race served as a qualifier for the Clasico del Caribe at Gulfstream Park in December.
