What is the Y? For many, it is a place. Their place. Where they gather safely with family and friends. Where they work on becoming the person they want to be. Others think of the Y as an organization. A proud leader in our community. A powerful champion of the men, women and children who need us most. Some even recognize the Y as a movement. A tireless drive to change lives and strengthen communities all over Central Florida. All of these definitions are true. But there is more to our story than that. Every day, the spirit of the Y is brought to life not by the bricks and mortar of our facilities, not by the strength and structure of our organization, but by the passion and conviction of our people. Our staff. Our volunteers. Our donors. The men and women who wake up every day and take on the challenging, often thankless work of making our community stronger. These are the people who make the Y possible.

GIVING FUTURE GENERATIONS A PLACE TO CALL THEIR OWN As a teenager growing up in Orlando, Frank DeLuca’s second home was the Downtown Y. It was a place for he and his buddies to hang out, play sports and stay out of trouble. The Y played such a prominent role in his life that decades later, when a friend asked him to support the Marion County Y Scholarship Campaign, Frank became a major contributor. But it was a chance meeting that convinced him to deepen his commitment even further. One summer, the Marion County Y Executive Director took Frank onto the field to see the summer campers–half of whom were on scholarship–in action. Two boys walked right up to him and said, “Mr. DeLuca, thank you for supporting the Y.” They were just like he was once. Young kids in need of a place to hang out, play sports and stay out of trouble. With his 2012 capital campaign contribution, Frank DeLuca left an enduring legacy to these boys, and the generations that come after them: the newly renamed Frank DeLuca Y, a place they can call their own.

“Every day, I have the opportunity to impact the lives of more than 3,000 children, providing them with the caring mentors and guidance they need to be successful in life. Not only is this job my passion, The Y is my home.”

HELPING STUDENTS STAY ON THE RIGHT TRACK Nancy Bryant ensures that more than 3,000 students per year have a safe and nurturing environment after school, and leads the 250 staff members who serve as role models at 45 locations. Challenging as it is, Nancy cherishes the opportunity to change lives in a big way every single day. Four years ago, when she heard about three neighborhood children who were almost abducted during their walk home from school, Nancy knew that the Y could make a difference in that family’s life. She helped all three children secure a Youth Scholarship so they could enroll in the Y After School program at their neighborhood school. Not only did they attend regularly, but the children thrived in the caring environment, making great academic gains and forming new lasting friendships. And for every story like this one, there are 2,999 more each year. And Nancy plays a part in every single one.

“In this day and age, the Y is what we really need. Young people are going to be our future leaders, and we need to help them in any way we can. I want the the Y to continue to be the beacon of this community.”

CONNECTING THE Y TO THE PEOPLE WHO NEED US MOST Despite being the outgoing President of the NAACP and earning a reputation as one of the most effective community advocates in our state, Kran Riley doesn’t like to dwell on his past achievements. He’d rather talk about the future, and how to create a better one for Central Florida. For more than thirty years, part of his answer has been to connect more people to the Y. As community relations director for Wayne Densch Charities, Kran drove the capital contribution that established the Wayne Densch Y in Pine Hills and shepherded the foundation’s subsequent support of the J. Douglas Williams and South Orlando Ys. He believes the power of the Y lies in its commitment to serving all people, from all communities, all life long. As an active member of the Y Metro Board’s Executive Committee and Advocacy Committee, he keeps that power alive, ensuring that the Y remains accessible to those who need us most.

“The Y means everything to me. It means opportunity, responsibility and confidence. I now have a sense of responsibility not only to give back to the next generation of divers, but also to give back to the Y for their impact on my life.”

PASSING THE TORCH The world knows him as a two-time Olympian, 22-time US National Champion, and one of the top five most accomplished medal-winning divers in American history. The 150 competitive divers who train at the YMCA Aquatic Center know him as their supportive and inspiring coach. But when Mark Ruiz first came to the Y, he was just a young boy with a big dream. In 1992, Mark came from Puerto Rico to Orlando for a winter diving camp that was held at the YMCA Aquatic Center. The state-of-the-art facility and diving program amazed him–so much so that he convinced his mother to move to Orlando, leaving behind her business, friends and most of their family so Mark could pursue his Olympic dream. Although they could barely afford the diving fees, the YMCA welcomed Mark and his mother with open arms, offering a scholarship that gave Mark the opportunity to train for competition at the highest level. While his career has surpassed all expectations, including his own, Mark’s crowning achievement is his commitment to the next generation of champions.

“My passion and compassion is with teenagers. It’s a tough age. They want to talk about what they think, what they feel and what they believe in, but they’re not always listened to. The Y is here for teens when they need us most.”

HELPING THREE GENERATIONS OF TEENS STAY ON THE RIGHT TRACK As the volunteer leader of pivotal Y teen programs such as the Blue Ridge Values Conference, Tracey Sullivan has been helping teens unlock their true potential for more than forty years–so long that several of “her kids” now hold executive leadership roles at major national organizations, including our own. As proud as she is of their success in the world, she is even prouder of what they continue to accomplish right here at the Y. This year, during a Teen Leadership Conference held at Camp Wewa, more than 30 adults came from all over the state to volunteer. Each one had been through the program as a teen. Now, they were helping today’s campers write a personal mission statement then tackle the rock-climbing wall known simply as “Goliath.” As she watched the climbers’ confidence and the mentors’ pride grow with every step up, Tracy knew that helping to bring the best out of someone else is the greatest success of all.

“I’m proud of my work as a custodian. I get to go around the whole building, cleaning and talking to people. So many people have so much need. I can make a difference in their lives just by smiling, by making sure they have what they need, and by talking to them.”

KEEPING HER FAMILY CENTER CLEAN AND HER HEART OPEN Cerena Pitters is proud of her role keeping the locker rooms spotless, the facility fresh and the members happy. And in her twelve years at the Y, she’s managed to address people’s needs in ways that go way beyond keeping things clean. Several years ago, she approached a young boy named Cooper who was hanging out at the Y during school hours. He told Cerena he was “taking the day off.” A mother herself, Cerena told the boy how important it was to stay in school and take his education seriously. She also told him that if he “took the day off” again, she was going to call his mother. A decade later, when Cooper graduated from UCF, he stopped by the Y to thank Cerena for her words of encouragement that day. For him, it was a life-changing moment. For Cerena, it was just another day on the job.

“Every day, I have the opportunity to make an impact on a person’s life. Every day, I have an opportunity to lead my team to make a difference.”

MAKING EVERYONE FEEL COMFORTABLE EMBRACING HEALTH & WELLNESS When it comes to creating a healthier community in West Orange County, Justin Higa is doing his part, one person at a time. While health and wellness have been part of his life forever, he knows that some people need help getting started on their journey, and connecting with them is what he does best. For instance, Justin met Sue when she walked into the Y for the first time. In her mid-forties, Sue was overweight and suffering from low energy and other health issues. She had just toured a local gym and left feeling uncomfortable, unwelcome and intimidated. Lucky for her, the first person she met at the Y was Justin. Before even talking about fitness or showing her the wellness floor, he took the time to sit with Sue one-on-one, getting her to relax and open up about her goals and challenges. Today, Sue is an active Y member who feels totally comfortable taking advantage of all the Y has to offer–especially Zumba classes, which she attends twice a week, always stopping on her way out to say “hi” to the guy who got her started in the first place.

“I don’t look at the YMCA staff as instructors; I look at them as my family. I love My Wayne Densch family!”

BUILDING A HEALTHIER FAMILY AND A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY Felicia Carmichael joined the Wayne Densch YMCA in 2011, after having her third child and being diagnosed with high blood pressure. Her goal was to improve her health for the sake of for her family. She never imagined the impact she would have on so many other families as well. On her first day at the Wayne Densch Y, Felicia attended a Zumba class and her youngest son, then three, fell in love with the basketball court. Today, and her son is in his 9th season of Youth Sports and Felicia has attended more Zumba classes than she can count. She also coaches soccer, serves as president of the Parents Committee, and has met several good workout buddies who became great friends. While she started out with her health in mind, the Y has helped Felicia change much more. It has touched every aspect of her life for the better, and now she is proud to pass that change on to the parents, children and families of her community.

“This is bigger than a job for me. Our YMCAs are the hubs of our community. There is such a strong sense of community between staff, members, volunteers and board members. Together, we know that we are making a big impact.”

PUTTING OUR RESOURCES TO WORK FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY Colleen Manahan oversees all of the association’s support services, which include Accounting, Finance, Human Resources and Risk Management. Her leadership ensures that all of our resources are working effectively for the good of our community. Colleen came to the Y after more than a decade working in the private sector. She quickly realized that this would not just be another job, but an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in so many people’s lives. From strategically deploying every dollar raised during our annual campaign to empowering every staff member to do their job better every day, Colleen’s work creates a ripple effect that touches every member of the Y community. The non- English speaking staff member who completes his orientation seamlessly. The family who receives their scholarship funds just in time for the kids to join the soccer team. The donor who knows, dollar for dollar, that her contribution is making a difference. Colleen is their champion, dedicated to creating a better Y experience for all.
