The Marine Forces Pacific and the Navy Pacific Fleet bands joined forces for a rehearsal March 30 in preparation for a trip to American Samoa to celebrate the islands' 100 as a U.S. territory. The joint service band will leave April 11 for the Polynesian islands and will remain there throughout the celebration. "The Marine Corps and Navy had an important involvement 100 years ago in the forming of our territory," said Master Chief Petty Officer Felise Tupuola, leading chief petty officer for Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet housing, a Samoan native and coordinator for the trip. "Because of that involvement, we want the services' hands to help us celebrate." Tupuola is not the only Samoan returning home. There were five Sailors at the rehearsal who will soon be returning to their homeland to join in the festivities. American Samoa was a vital territory in the Pacific, explained Lt. j.g. Siatunuu Siatunuu, ordnance officer for Marine Aviation Logistic Support Element Kaneohe. The island is still used as a stopping point for ships and aircraft going across the Pacific Ocean. This trip is the first to Samoa for the MarForPac Band, according to Staff Sgt. Grady May, drum major for the MarForPac Band. He added that the band does not go on trips like this very often. In fact, the last trip was nearly a year ago when the band went to Australia, Fiji and Photo by Cpl. Roman Yurek Singapore. No rain could wash away the enthusiasm Friday as Marines from 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment showed their spouses, family members and significant others what kind of training they do and even let them try some of it on their own. About 30 women accompanied their Marines from India, Kilo, Lima, Weapons, and Headquarters and Service companies throughout the rainy morning. The group was divided into three separate platoons, and each rotated through several stations that tested their endurance, strength, balance and confidence. "It's a blast," said Pam Tinsley, one of the spouse participants as she saw Marines repelling off the tower under a light drizzle of rain. "You get a real good opportunity to see what Marines do. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." Before the rain started coming down hard, some participants were able to repel off the tower. "After all this, I might just join the Marines," said Victoria Vispetto with a smile, before tying on a "seat" to repel off the tower. Participants also rode in amphibious assault vehicles with flack jackets and helmets, attempted to overcome several obstacles at the Leadership Reaction Course, and learned about a variety of weapons which are organic to an infantry unit. A static display of a CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter was also on display where guests got an up-close look at one of the ways their significant others get to work. "It's about time they knew what we do," said Lance Cpl. Lawrence Mawn, an infantryman with India Company, as he watched his girlfriend try to overcome an obstacle at the LRC. "The rain makes it even better." After Marines joked around with and giggled at their guests trying to accomplish one obstacle, they were called on to overcome it themselves, turning the tables and giving the guests the opportu- nity to poke fun at them. EVERY CLIME AND PLACE Nonlethal training prepares unit for Dynamic Response Sgt. Arthur Stone 2d MEUISOC) Correspondent The Marines of Echo Company, Battalion Landing Team 2/6 broke out the batons, shields and shotguns March 25 prior to the start of NATO's Exercise Dynamic Response 2000. The warriors wore their riot gear and brushed up on the basics of nonlethal training that every infantryman must learn prior to a deployment, regardless of the region's environment they are deploying to. -It gives commanders a nonlethal means to employ forces," said I st LA. Al Cheng, platoon commander with Echo Co. "We went through nonlethal training with the Special Operations Training Group at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. We trained with stinger ball grenades and nonlethal rounds for the shotguns and M203 grenade launchers, as well as the batons and shields. We are task organized and have people who specialize with each device. The mission is to recover personnel or to snatch riot leaders." The Marines trained for hours in the larg(7 rock-strewn lots of Camp Casablanca, where fellow Marines, acting as rioters, hurled rocks, yelled slurs, and rushed and assaulted their fellow Marines in simulation of a volatile environment. The nonlethal squad met the assault with raised shields and ready batons. A snatch team armed with shotguns waited on the flanks of the line of warriors wielding shields and batons, ready to tire non- lethal shotgun rounds into the crowd of aggressors if the order came. Like Roman legions of old, the shields formed an unbroken and impenetrable wall of defense against those assaulting them. Suddenly the order came, and the line took a knee in unison as the shotgun-wielding warriors on the flanks opened fire, followed by a second simulated volley of nonlethal rounds. The interlocking wall of shields rose again on command, parting down the middle to allow one snatch team to race out and secure those who had been taken down by the blast. The other team provided cover for them with raised weapons, ready to protect their brothers-in-arms. On command, the two snatch teams returned through the breach in their front lines, carrying with them the riot leaders as the row of shields closed ranks behind them. "These Marines are highly trained and prepared to fulfill the mis- sion," said Cheng. "We're ready to take on any mission we are assigned. The platoon has been trained in nonlethal means through- out predeployment training. We are the platoon assigned and task- organized to do nonlethal operations, but every platoon is trained to fulfill our mission." The Marines worked on the training until they mastered how to do each move flawlessly, executing each command with a rap on their shields, while challenging the rioters to back off. Their efforts were rewarded with the motivation and precision that only comes from executing a task repeatedly as a team. "It's good training," said Cpl. Rodney D. Levesque, a squad leader with Weapons Platoon. "It gives the Marine the opportunity Photo by Sgt. A Marine Sergeant from Kunia recently' finished the Hawaiian Classic bodybuilding competition with the overall and heavyweight titles. It was the first formal competition for Sgt. Jennifer Kubin, a linguist sta- tioned at Marine Support Battalion, Kunia, Hawaii, and she walked away with two trophies. "It was a great accomplishment for me since I am still new to the sport,"said the 23-year-old linguist. "It was nice to pick up a couple of tro- phies." "When I started lifting, I wanted to look like the women in fitness maga- zines," she explained. "Other Marines didn't think I could, because I was real skinny then. With work and discipline, I proved them wrong." The magazines were not what got Kubin interested in bodybuilding though - it was an injury. She said that as a lance corporal she got hurt and the injury forced her to spend her unit's physical training time in the gym. Soon after that, her interest increased and she began lifting as much as possible. When she began working out, she said she had some idea of what she was doing, but needed guidance. That's where her current trainer and fitness partner, Alex Alponpel, came into her body building life. "He took me every step of the way, from planning my workouts to diets," said Kubin. "If it wasn't for him I would not be where I am now." Alponpel, an experienced body builder, explained that he noticed her potential when he saw her working out in the gym. One day he asked her to spot him and ever since the two have been training together. Kubin trains at the gym six days each week, and said the hard training does make some hardships for her. "The dieting that I went through before the competition required me to eat things like raw fish," the native of Lenexa, Kansas said, explaining the hard training and dieting before the competition were wearing on her. "At work I felt like a zombie, but it was the rush of working out that kept me going." That rush almost carried her to a competition last year, but her confi- dence was not there yet. She said that for the Hawaiian Classic her confidence was 100 percent and so was her part- ner's. "I have been in body building since the early 1980's," said Alponpel. "I am involved with the local circuits and I knew she would give them (other female body builders) a run for their money." After her win, Kubin said she was surprised to find the other competitors asking her for tips and advice. According to Kubin and Alponpel, all they do is train hard and stay dedi- cated to their workouts and schedules. Kubin said her success was realized by setting goals and going after them. After winning the statewide competi- tion in two categories, she's set her sights even higher. "I talked her into doing the Hawaiian Classic when I realized her caliber," said Alponpel. "Her intensity and cal- iber could easily get her into national competitions." Competing on a national level would be nice, she said, but added that there is a limit to how far she will push her body. "1 want to stay looking like a lady, with a balance of muscle and femi- ninty," said Kubin. "When I am 40 years old, I want 20-year-old women saying they want to look like me." Full Force took the double elimina- tion tournament in the second game with a score of 15 -1 I after initially los- ing 13-5. Teamsports came to the plate rested and ready after the final games of the weekend tournament were postponed due to rain. They quickly polished off the last obstacle on the way to the championship round by leading by more than 10 runs in the 5th inning. They took time to take a breath before they came out swinging against full force. Chris Boudreau cleared the bases with two outs to put them up 4-0 at the top of the 2nd inning. Lenny Kanyo edged Teamsports far- ther along by driving a long shot over the right field fence, bringing in two runs. Scott Shirley took the plate next and followed suit with another one out of the park. Hopes were high on the Teamsports side as they went into the final game, until Full Force knocked in two' runs in the first two hatters.
