5 The gifts are in the feast, 6 All glory to the One Gifts far more than we see; Who lavishes such love; Beneath the bread and wine The triune God in love Is food from Calvary. Assures our life above. The body and the blood His means of grace for us Remove our ev’ry sin; Are gifts He loves to give; We leave His presence in All thanks and praise for His His peace, renewed again. Great love by which we live! Text: © 2001 Richard C. Resch. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License no. 110002551 Stand if able, or sit. The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Kneel if able, or sit. Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. + Service of the Word +

Introit Stand (Ps. 44:1–2, 7–8; antiphon: Ps. 44:23, 25a, 26a) HEALEY WILLAN Awake, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? Arise, cast us not off forever. Wherefore hidest Thou Thy face and forgettest our affliction? Our soul is bowed down to the dust; arise for our help and redeem us.

O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have | told us,* what deeds you performed in their days, | in the days of old: you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you | planted;* you afflicted the peoples, but | them you set free. But you have saved us from | our foes* and have put to shame | those who hate us. In God we have boasted contin- | ually,* and we will give thanks to your | name forever. Glory be to the Father and to | the Son* and to the | Holy Spirit; as it was in the be- | ginning,* is now, and will be for- | ever. Amen. (Antiphon is repeated) Kyrie LSB 168

Sit Hymn 823 May God Bestow on Us His Grace Stanza 2 sung by cantor in setting by Kenneth Kosche

Sermon

Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Lord’s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Closing Collect A Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, giver and perfecter of our faith, we thank and praise You for continuing among us the preaching of Your Gospel for our instruction and edification. Send Your blessing upon the Word, which has been spoken to us, and by Your Holy Spirit increase our saving knowledge of You, that day by day we may be strengthened in the divine truth and remain steadfast in Your grace. Give us strength to fight the good fight and by faith to overcome all the temptations of Satan, the flesh, and the world so that we may finally receive the salvation of our souls; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Benediction LSB 183 P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace. C Amen. (Lk 8:4–15) But the planting of Christ is attacked by the devil, the world, and the flesh. Satan snatches the Word away from hard hearts. The riches and pleasures of this life choke off faith. Shallow and emotional belief withers in time of temptation and trouble. But see how Christ bears this attack for us! Christ’s cross was planted in the hard and rocky soil of Golgotha. A crown of thorns was placed upon His head. Satan and His demons hellishly hounded and devoured Him. Yet, through His dying and rising again, He destroyed these enemies of ours. Jesus is Himself the Seed which fell to the ground and died in order that it might sprout forth to new life and produce much grain. In Him the weak are strong. In Him is rest (Hebrews 4:9-13). He is the Word of the Father which does not return void (Is 55:10–13) but yields a hundredfold.
