Earthquake in Manokwari, West Province

SITREP # 1: 24 April at 17.00 PM local time (UCT+7)

HIGH LIGHTS

 On Saturday, 21 April 2012 at 10.16 AM Central Indonesian Time (UCT+6), an 6.8 RS earthquake with 10 km depth hit Manokwari, ;  The epicenter was located 1.58 N - 134.41 E.  Tsunami warning was not raised;  An aftershock was reported at 11.16 AM Central Indonesian Time (UCT+6) with 1.61 N - 134.23 E with 5.0 SR – 5.7 SR ;  By 21 April 2012 at 23.00 PM Western Indonesian Time (UCT+7), Centre for Health Crisis (CHC), Ministry of Health (MoH) reported minor injury of 1 person;  Manokwari DHO and West Papua PHO have deployed the team to monitor the situation in the hospital, puskesmas and shelter;  Manokwari DHO has provided medical service in Manokwari hospital;  Manokwari DHO, West Papua PHO and Center for Health Crisis MOH are monitoring the situation closely.  WHO is in close contact with MOH to provide any assistance needed.

Situation Analysis

Location : 1.58 N - 134.41 E Epicenter : 88 km Southeast MANOKWARI-WEST PAPUA Tsunami warning : No tsunami alert was issued. Tremor : 3 seconds tremor was felt by the resident in Manokwari and Ransiki. The tremor was felt as strong as the tremor in 2002 and 2009. Most affected area : Manokwari and Ransiki

Earthquake review  Irwan Meilano, an earthquake expert in ITB, the earthquake may be caused by the active Ransiki fault or active folding in Bintuni Bay. Ransiki fault has shear rate 8.5 mm per year.  A landslide in Mt. Sayori, Tanah Rubuh district was reported as the impact of the earthquake. This mountain connects Manokwari with eastern area of Ransiki district and Oransbari including Bintuni bay.

Manokwari and Ransiki  Manokwari is the capital city of West Papua province. The area coverage of Manokwari is 18,746 km². It has 150,000 people.  Ransiki is one of the districts in West Papua province.

Damaged homes, offices and infrastructure

 Media reported that based on the information from District Disaster Management Agency/Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD) Manokwari, there were 6 severe and 30 light damaged houses in Ransiki.

Communication, Transportation and Electricity Power Communication No communication line was disrupted.

Transportation On 22 April 2012, there was 5 hours temporary disruption in Mt. Sayori due to the landslide.

Electricity Power No temporary electricity outage was reported.

Response

Local Government  Manokwari DHO and West Papua PHO have deployed the team to monitor the situation in the hospital, puskesmas and shelter.  Manokwari DHO has provided medical service in Manokwari hospital

Center for Health Crisis, Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia  Manokwari DHO, West Papua PHO and Center for Health Crisis MOH are monitoring the situation closely.

WHO, Republic of Indonesia  WHO is in close contact with MoH to provide any assistance needed.
