Wortman Honored with Brook Berringer Scholarship Nebraska senior linebacker Tyler Wortman was presented the Brook Berringer Memorial Endowed Scholarship during pre-game ceremonies before the San Jose State game. The scholarship was endowed in the memory of former Nebraska quarterback Brook Berringer who died in a plane crash on April 18, 1996. Criteria for the Brook Berringer Scholarship includes the following: Must be a football student- athlete; must be involved in community service along with high ideals, excellent character and integrity. A native of Grand Island, Wortman fits the criteria of the Berringer Scholarship. He has worked his way up the depth chart to his current starting BUCK linebacker position. Off the field, Wortman excels in the classroom and in the community. He carries a 3.955 cumulative grade-point average in mechanical engineering and was a first-team academic All-Big 12 selection in 2007. He is on track to earn his degree in May of 2009. He was also named to the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team this past spring for his outreach work. Ames, Iowa (Oct. 18) --- Nebraska dominated the first half and put Iowa State away in the fourth quarter, as the Huskers snapped a three-game losing streak with an impressive 35-7 win. In perhaps their best half of football of the season, the Huskers amassed 349 yards of total offense in the first half on their way to a 21-0 lead. Nebraska opened the scoring with Nate Swift’s 19-yard reception from Joe Ganz with 5:27 left in the opening quarter. Swift, who had eight catches for 112 yards, became the second player in school history with more than 2,000 receiving yards, finishing the day with 2,021 career yards. Ganz completed 27-of-37 passes for 328 yards and one touchdown, leading a balanced arsenal that rolled up 548 yards of total offense, including 220 yards on the ground. The Blackshirt defense also held its own, allowing just 218 yards of total offense, including 105 on the ground. Armando Murillo, Cody Glenn and Larry Asante each had five tackles, while Murillo added an 11-yard fumble return and a pass breakup. Zach Potter and Clayton Sievers each posted a sack, with Sievers adding one of Nebraska’s three forced fumbles while Potter had one the team’s seven pass breakups.
