THE INVISIBLE MONSTROUS-FEMININE: THE BLAIR WITCH AND HER HETEROTOPIC WOODS Erez Genish San Francisco, California 2015 What is absent in the pseudo found-footage film of Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick’s The Blair Witch Project (1999), is the visual depiction of the Blair witch. The nontraditional tactic of leaving the witch in the woods without form stands in contrast to other folklore and fairytales that perpetuated the mythic figure of the crone, an old woman whose decaying body represents the blurred line between life and death. The crone- witch corresponds to Barbara Creed’s notion of the monstrous-feminine and her analysis of Julia Kristeva’s abject. As her polluted, filthy old mark her a phobic referent, the crone-witch becomes the non-object that draws the subject to the regenerative womb. However, what draws a parallel in the BWP between the monstrous-feminine crone and abjection is the witch’s invisibility.

  • Imta Alum Wes Robinson on the Hunt for Blair Witch
IMTA ALUM WES ROBINSON ON THE HUNT FOR BLAIR WITCH IMTA Press Release September 15, 2016 Blair Witch lands in theatres on Friday, September 16th “A truly memorable cinematic experience and an instant horror classic. No, really. Go see it.” – TheHollywoodNews.com It has been nearly 20 years since The Blair Witch Project was released and became one of the highest grossing, low-budget independent films in history, earning over $240 million worldwide on an estimated final budget of $60,000. The film was an account based on “found footage” of three film students — Heather, Michael and Josua — making a film about a local urban legend, the Blair Witch. The students disappeared in Maryland’s Black Hills Forest and were never seen again. Blair Witch, originally titled The Woods as a marketing ploy by Lionsgate Entertainment to keep the film secret, is a direct sequel to The Blair Witch Project. Now a new group of film students, one of them James, the brother of Heather, venture into the same forest to try and uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister and her companions. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods. But as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, the group begins to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined. The film stars James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid, and IMTA alum Wes Robinson who plays Lane, one of the local guides and the techie who uploaded the “found footage” to YouTube, setting the story in motion.

  • Supernatural Folklore in the Blair Witch Films: New Project, New Proof
129 Supernatural Folklore in the Blair Witch Films: New Project, New Proof Peter Turner (Oxford Brookes University) Found footage horror films can be significant examples of folk horror, juxtaposing modern technology with its capture of ancient monsters of folklore. These films frequently combine contemporary anxieties over digital technology (Blake and Aldana Reyes 2016) with more archaic fears such as witches, trolls and demons. Both The Blair Witch Project (Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, 1999) and its second sequel Blair Witch (Adam Wingard, 2016) dramatise the search for proof of supernatural occurrences. Adam Scovell notes that the narrative of The Blair Witch Project ‘is quintessential Folk Horror through its use of rurality’. The film ‘basks in its rural/urban divide, where the naive students have completely underestimated both the landscape and the power of its folklore’ (2017: 117). The characters in these films are at once sceptical of the existence of a historical witch haunting the area and yet also open-minded enough to take their modern camera technology and try to capture evidence of a supernatural phenomenon—one rooted in the local folklore of Maryland’s woods. Developments in camera technology in the years between the production of The Blair Witch Project and Blair Witch complicate the capturing of proof, and I argue that this leads to different responses from viewers of the two films. While The Blair Witch Project and Blair Witch share many similarities in their representation of proof, there are notable differences regarding the diegetic technology that the characters have at their disposal. After exploring how an impression of authenticity is created in both films through a modern digital camera aesthetics that has substantively changed in the seventeen years between the release of these two films, I then examine how the folklore established in The Blair Witch Project is developed in the distinctive aesthetics of the 2016 sequel.

  • An Investigation of Priming, Self-Consciousness, and Allegiance in the Diegetic Camera Horror Film
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Oxford Brookes University: RADAR An investigation of priming, self-consciousness, and allegiance in the diegetic camera horror film by Peter Turner A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the award of Doctor of Philosophy by Oxford Brookes University Submitted June 2017 Statement of originality Some of the discussion of The Blair Witch Project throughout this thesis has formed the basis for a book, Devil’s Advocates: The Blair Witch Project (Auteur, 2014). Some of the discussion of priming in chapter four was also used in a conference paper, Behind the Camera: Priming the Spectator of Found Footage Horror, delivered at The Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image in 2015. Sections on personal imagining also formed the basis of a conference paper, Personal Imagining and the Point-of-View Shot in Diegetic Camera Horror Films, delivered at The Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image in 2017. Finally, significant amounts of Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 will be featured in two chapters of an upcoming edited collection on found footage horror films with the working title [Rec] Terror: Essays on Found Footage Horror Films. i Abstract The main research question underpinning this study asks why and how the diegetic camera technique has become so popular to both contemporary horror filmmakers and audiences. In order to answer this question, this thesis adopts a mainly cognitive theoretical framework in order to address the mental schemata and processes that are elicited and triggered by these films.

This project explores works of horror fiction that work upon the conceit of being a found text that is in some way representative of the real world. I argue that these texts, rather than just being an adrenaline rush, are able to teach us how to be better readers of the world around us. I study a breadth of horror texts, focusing specifically on the film The Blair Witch Project, the novel House o f Leaves, and the Twitter story “Dear David.” Each text ushers in a new mode of horror, in which we never know who—or what—we can trust.

1 PERVERSE PLEASURES: SPECTATORSHIP THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Tamiko Southcott Hayter A Research Report submitted to the Faculty of Humanity, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts. Johannesburg, 2005 2 By drawing on contemporary scholarship that addresses spectatorship in the cinema generally, and in the horror genre specifically, I analyze the perverse pleasure afforded by The Blair Witch Project. To do this I argue that pleasure in horror is afforded through the masochistic positioning of the viewer, especially in relation to psychoanalytic theories surrounding gender in spectator positioning. I also look at the way the film re-deploys conventions, both documentary conceptions of the ‘real’, as well as generic expectations of horror, to activate the perverse pleasure of horror. The Blair Witch Project Spectatorship Psychoanalytic Film Theory Horror Film Conventions Gender Abjection Monstrous Feminine Masochism 3 Declaration I declare that this research essay is my own unaided work. HAUNTED DETECTIVES: THE MYSTERIES OF AMERICAN TRAUMA DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian R. Hauser, B.A., M.A. The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Jared Gardner, Adviser Professor James Phelan ____________________________________ Professor Linda Mizejewski Adviser English Graduate Program Copyright by Brian R. Hauser 2008 ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I investigate American motion picture narratives from the 1990s in which detectives encounter the supernatural. These narratives did not originate during this decade, but there were a remarkable number of them compared to previous periods. I argue that the supernatural is often analogous to personal, national, or cultural trauma. I further suggest that a detective investigating the supernatural stands in for the psychoanalyst, who studies and treats this trauma. I then trace the origins of the supernatural detective in history, as well as in British and American popular fiction. To begin, I discuss Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow (1999) as an example of a supernatural detective, who is himself traumatized but who also manages to solve the supernatural mystery in the eponymous village. That solution points to the obscured narrative of women’s rights in the early-American republic. Next, I suggest that spaces can be traumatized like people. I introduce the concept of the chronotope of the traumatized space, which I then apply to Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House (1959) and its various film and television adaptations to argue that these influential haunted house tales have helped repress scientific research into the paranormal as a reputable field of inquiry and the paranormal researcher as an admirable calling.

Bewitched:: HOW “BLAIR WITCH” ENTRANCED THE MEDIA BY CHRISTOPHER HAWTHORNE BEWITCHED: HOW “BLAIR WITCH” ENTRANCED THE MEDIA n the summer of 1999, as a low-budget, 10 loosely plotted, 81-minute horror filmI called “The Blair Witch Project” climbed to the top of America’s box-office rankings, stories in the national media began heralding the movie as a new kind of cultural phenomenon: the indie block- buster. With a nudge and a wink, the articles also noted how many people were falling for its grainy visuals and pseudo-documentary format. Viewers around the country, according to journalists, were impressionable enough to believe that the movie was an authentic record of three young filmmakers’ deaths at the hands of a backwoods spook in rural Maryland. In early August, a Time magazine reporter pulled aside a woman named Paula Taylor as she emerged from a Chicago theater where “Blair Witch” was playing to packed houses. Asked if she’d thought the film was real at any point before seeing it, Taylor replied, “You mean it’s not? The web site made it sound as if it was. I can’t believe it.” Not to be outdone, Newsweek found a male version of Taylor in 33- year-old Jeff Johnsen, who set up the first “Blair Witch” shrine on the World Wide Web. He told the magazine that at first he thought the movie was true BEWITCHED to life, and that “when I found out it was fictional, I just thought [the film- makers] were geniuses.” A late-July piece in Entertainment Weekly opened with a string of questions that aped the impressionable voice of a potential “Blair Witch” viewer: “Is it real? Have you seen it? Is it the scariest movie ever? No, seriously, is it real?” The reporters relating these episodes could hardly muffle their scorn for all the naifs lining up at the American multiplex.

Indeed, the cultural production of what J. P.
