Málaga CF will look to take their debut UEFA Champions League campaign another step forward as they prepare for a round of 16 meeting with FC Porto. • Málaga's only away defeat in European competition came in Portugal but encouragement comes in the fact that Porto have lost the same number of games at home against Spanish opponents as they have won – seven. Match background • It is the teams' first meeting and Porto, in the knockout rounds for the tenth time, will have to improve their home record against Spanish clubs. The last such contest ended in a 5-1 defeat of Villarreal CF in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League semi-final but that was only the second victory in nine home matches since 1999. • A 3-2 defeat in the second leg did not stop Porto's progress to the final where they went on to lift their fifth major European trophy. In the round of 32 they had lost the home leg 1-0 to Sevilla FC but went through courtesy of a 2-1 first-leg away win. • Porto's 37 games against Spanish sides have left them with the overall record W12 D5 L20 (W7 D3 L7 in Porto). • Porto have also met Spanish opposition in two UEFA Champions League semi-finals. They lost 3-0 to FC Barcelona in a one-off match at the in 1993/94, but beat RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 en route to winning the trophy. A 0-0 home draw was followed by a 1-0 away success. • The Portuguese champions were last at this stage in 2009/10, when they beat Arsenal FC 2-1 at home with Silvestre Varela on target in the 11th minute only to go down 5-0 away. • This season Porto won all three home games in finishing as Group A runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain FC, whom they beat 1-0 before defeating FC Dynamo Kyiv (3-2) and GNK Dinamo Zagreb (3-0). On their travels Porto won 2-0 in Zagreb, drew 0-0 in Kyiv and then went down 2-1 in Paris to slip behind PSG in the final standings. • The Portuguese champions have won seven of their last ten home European games, losing only against Manchester City FC (2-1) in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg. • Málaga began their first UEFA Champions League campaign in style by finishing first in Group C, four points clear of seven-time champions AC Milan. They are unbeaten in the competition, starting with a home win and away draw against Panathinaikos FC in the play-offs. They then won their first three group games, drawing the remaining three. • Manuel Pellegrini's team won 3-0 at RSC Anderlecht before draws at Milan (1-1) and FC Zenit St Petersburg (2-2). At home Zenit (3-0) and Milan (1-0) were defeated before a 2-2 matchday six draw with Anderlecht, which meant the Spanish side matched the feat of Pellegrini's Villarreal CF outfit in staying unbeaten on their group stage debut. • In 12 away European games Málaga have suffered only one defeat. That came in Portugal in their only previous campaign, encompassing the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup and 2002/03 UEFA Cup. The Liga club won five and drew two of eight fixtures on the road, coming unstuck only in the quarter-finals when a 1-0 reverse at Boavista FC tied the aggregate scores at 1-1. Boavista won the penalty shoot-out 4-1. Team ties • Weligton played in Portugal for FC Penafiel between 2003 and 2006, making 90 league appearances. He faced Porto three times in the Portuguese league during that time and lost every one. • Lucho González and Martín Demichelis were team-mates at CA River Plate in 2002/03. Eliseu and Rolando played together at CF Os Belenenses between 2004 and 2007. • Oguchi Onyewu, who is on loan from Sporting Clube de Portugal, was sent off against Porto last season in a 2-0 Superliga away defeat. Fernando was also dismissed. • Manuel Iturra played in UD Leiria's 2-0 home league defeat by Porto on 14 March 2011. • Duda began his career at Vitória SC but did not play in a competitive fixture before joining Cádiz CF in 1999. • Javier Saviola played for SL Benfica between 2009 and 2012, scoring 24 goals in 69 league matches including twice in nine appearances against Porto. He was on the winning side on four occasions. • Miguel Lopes, Rolando, João Moutinho and Silvestre Varela play for Portugal alongside Eliseu and Duda. • Helton, Alex Sandro, Danilo, Kléber and Júlio Baptista have all been capped by Brazil. Nicolás Otamendi, Lucho, Demichelis and Javier Saviola are Argentinian internationals.

FC Porto: Vítor Pereira Date of birth: 26 July 1968 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: AD Sanjoanense, SC Espinho, CD Santa Clara, FC Porto • An amateur player in his teens with hometown club Espinho, UD Oliveirense, AA Avanca and Fiães SC, Pereira took a degree in physical education before starting his coaching career as Porto Under-15 trainer in 2003. • In 2004/05 he embraced his first challenge in senior football at the helm of Sanjoanense, then returned home to Espinho the following season. • Regarded as a methodical, tactical expert he spent two years in the Azores with second-tier side Santa Clara, guiding them to third and fourth place in 2008/09 and 2009/10 respectively. • Despite interest from Liga clubs he accepted the invitation to become André Villas-Boas's assistant at Porto in 2010/11 as the Dragons won a quadruple of Liga, Portuguese Cup, Portuguese Super Cup and UEFA Europa League. • Within 24 hours of Villas-Boas stepping down to take the Chelsea FC post in June 2011, Pereira was installed as his replacement on a two-year contract and led the Dragons to the Liga title in his first season.

Málaga CF: Manuel Pellegrini Date of birth: 16 September 1953 Nationality: Chilean Playing career: CF Universidad de Chile Coaching career: CF Universidad de Chile, CD Palestino (three times), Chile Under-20, CD O'Higgins, CD Universidad Católica, LDU de Quito, CA San Lorenzo de Almagro, CA River Plate, Villarreal CF, Real Madrid CF, Málaga CF • The former centre-back began his coaching career in 1988 with his sole club as a player, Universidad de Chile, before spending the next 16 years working with sides in Chile, Ecuador and Argentina. • Took over at Villarreal in 2004, guiding them to third place in the Liga in his debut season and securing a place in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. His side also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. • The following campaign, Villarreal defied all expectations by reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, where they bowed out 1-0 on aggregate to Arsenal FC. Guided the club to second place in the 2007/08 Liga, a club record, and the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals the following season, again being knocked out by Arsenal. • Signed a two-year contract with Real Madrid on 2 June 2009, the club winning a then record 96 points in the Liga but still finishing second behind FC Barcelona, prompting Pellegrini's dismissal in May 2010 • That November he succeeded Jesualdo Ferreira as coach of Málaga and in the following campaign oversaw a fourth-placed league finish, the club's best ever, subsequently negotiating UEFA Champions League qualifying to reach the group stage for the first time.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC in 2011/12. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. • The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • Chelsea FC have become the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994.
