The Sneem Social History Book, 'Bridging Memories' was launched in Sneem Hotel on Saturday 27th of December by Mick O'Dwyer. It was a great night of pride and celebration for the whole community as they caught their first glimpse of the beautifull, full colour, hard cover book, filled with great photos and memories of times past while at the same time bringing the history of the parish right up to the present day. A good crowd turned up despite the heavy snowfall and dangerous driving conditions. The night kicked off with a traditional music session, which was followed by the introduction to the process involved in producing the book by Timmy O'Sullivan. Eileen O'Leary then spoke of how unique Sneem was especially for its sporting heroes and the many trades and crafts people that lived in the area over the years; she noted the huge amount of people who contributed articles and pictures to the publication. Mick O'Dwyer talked about the importance of sport in Sneem's history especially the strong rowing tradition in the area. He also spoke of the Casey Family world champion Wrestlers and the local football history and the fact that four Sneem men won All-Ireland medals with Kerry. He paid tribute to Gerald Hussey RIP and the great work he did in promoting in the area. He spoke highly of John Egan whom he described as a one of the finest forwards he ever saw playing the game; he was an exception he said, of Australia and their success on foreign shores, farming and fishing, all the Kerry players he saw in his lifetime he described John as the shops and businesses over the years, crafts people, education, schools, number one forward to put on the Kerrry jersey.
