1. Orange Shirt Day: Honouring Residential School Survivors Join us and hundreds of others across Canada and wear an orange shirt on Tuesday, September 30 to honour the children who survived the Indian Residential Schools and remember those that didn’t. Every Child Matters. We will wear orange shirts in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children’s sense of self-esteem and well-being, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. https://www.orangeshirtday.org/

Dr. Billie Allan is a Two Spirit Anishinaabe person from Sharbot Lake, Ontario, and currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Victoria and Chair of the Thunderbird Circle - Indigenous Social Work Educators’ Network (TC-ISWEN). Billie’s current research work is focused on the impact of racism on Indigenous peoples’ health, child welfare as a determinant of Indigenous health and well-being, and Two Spirit resurgence.

3. McGill School of Social Work Race Caucus

The Race Caucus at the McGill School of Social Work (SSW) is a newly formed group that aims to create a space for its members to critically explore how race, racialization, and racism operates in social work education, pedagogy, and research, and in turn, advocates for the development and implementation of responsive, needs-based interventions within the SSW. This caucus builds on past and ongoing organizing efforts by racialized students, staff, and faculty members at the School, including the Racialized Students Network.

Membership: Members of the McGill SSW community who self-identify as racialized, Black, Indigenous, and/or a person of colour. If you’re interested in joining the Caucus, please email [email protected] with your name, affiliation to McGill SSW (student, staff, faculty, alumni), and email address.

The caucus meets every first Friday of the month from 11:30 – 12:30 PM. Our next meeting is Friday, October 2nd.

4. Spirit Bear film premiere Cindy Blackstock write children's books based on true stories of how children of all diversities come together to learn about, and address, contemporary injustices facing children. The first book "Spirit Bear and Children Make History" tells the story of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal case and Jordan's Principle. The talented team at Spotted Fawn Productions (an Indigenous animation studio) has translated the story into stop motion animation, which will be premiered online at the Vancouver International Film Festival this Sunday at 6 pm EDT (3 PDT).

5. October is Queer History Month Celebrating and highlighting the history and achievements of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities at McGill and beyond: https://www.mcgill.ca/equity/article/queer-history-month-2020

In collaboration with McGill’s Queer History Month, the McGill School of Social Work Equity Diversity Decolonization Indigenization Initiative (EDDII) invites you to a special screening of Director Rémy Huberdeau’s film Transgender Parents on the evening of October 22nd, 2020 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The screening will be followed by a roundtable discussion with the Director and several guests, including Professor Jake Pyne. Evite TBA.

6. Town Hall - Equity Diversity Decolonization Indigenization Strategic Plan The first Town Hall to discuss the proposed Equity Diversity Decolonization Indigenization Strategic Plan 2020-2022 - compiled through consultation over the past several months. On October 28th, 2020, the proposed EDDI Strategic Plan will be presented for approval to the School Council.

7. Field Education Update AFE intern success scholarship grant ($2700): This grant, managed by the Ministry of Education, is relevant only for students' final year of field placement (U3 and MSW, block and concurrent). This application is not yet updated on the AFE website but as we get more information, we will let you know the process and due dates. 9. Melanie Doucet publishes study on supportive relationships for youth leaving care In a photo voice study released this month in the International Journal of Child and Adolescent Resilience, Dr. Melanie Doucet, PhD Grad and Course Lecturer, worked with eight former youth in care to describe what types of relationships they had found most helpful as they left group or foster care. Relationships to culture, spirituality and the land were identified as particularly important for racialized and Indigenous youth. Animal companions also emerged as an important non-human connection.

10. Alicia Boatswain-Kyte on differential impact of COVID-19 for Black Montrealers McGill-led project, COVID-19: Advocating for resiliency through understanding the differential impacts of COVID-19 for Black Montrealers, headed by Alicia Boatswain-Kyte, Assistant Professor at the School of Social Work, was recently awarded a special CCOVI-19 SSHRC grant. In partnership with the Cote-des- Neiges Black Community Association Inc. (CDNBCA), this project aims to empower the Black population in through an innovative collaboration between non-profit, private and research sectors to effectively advocate and make recommendations for planning and implementation of a response to the intersecting forces of racial disparities, underlying conditions and poverty in the face of the pandemic.

Together, they will conduct a needs assessment to determine the priorities and risks to Black Montrealers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. See highlights in the McGill Reporter.

11. The School is Moving!!! The School will be moving in December to 550 Sherbrooke to allow for reconstruction of Wilson Hall. Our temporary space is being renovated over the fall and will include a new Simulation Centre, student study areas, and spaces for all for the School’s research centres. More details on the move to come.

12. CRCF Child Protection scholarship - Deadline Dec 1st CRCF Child Protection scholarships are available to any person pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the School of Social Work at McGill University on this subject matter. This scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to cover the cost of attending a conference or to complete a research project (including community collaborative initiatives, completing an independent study project or tutorial) on the topic of child protection. Students must provide a brief report of the conference proceedings or research findings upon completion. Two scholarships of $500 are awarded per academic year and are non-renewable.

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, you must be enrolled as a student in McGill’s School of Social Work, full time or part time, during the winter term.

13. Jobs Opportunities

 Research Coordinator under Alicia Boatswain-Kyte and Jill Hanley. Approximately 12 hours/week over 11 months, and be flexible to the needs of the project.

 Research Assistant under Kate Maurer and Wanda Gabriel. Approximately 5-10 hours per week from September 2020 – July 1, 2021, flexible to the needs of the project.

 Research Assistant under Kate Maurer and Professor Charles Gyan to work remotely. Approximately 10-15 hours/week until December 31, 2020. The minimum hourly rate is $16.00/hour and may be adjusted based on experience. The position begins as soon as possible. There may be an option to extend the contract.
