A revision of the spider genus Macopaeus (Araneae : Salticidae) F. R. Wanless Department of Zoology, British Museum (Natural History) Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD Introduction The genus Macopaeus Simon, 1900 formerly included three species. The type species M. spinosus Simon belongs in the subfamily Lyssomaninae and is clearly related to Asemonea O. P. -Cambridge and Pandisus Simon. The original description of M. spinosus was based on a female, but Simon (1900) did not indicate the number of specimens examined. A female type specimen was examined by Roewer (1965) who diagnosed the genus but did not provide a description of the species. Despite the fact that this specimen has been subsequently lost and that the epigyne has never been figured, the spines on leg I are arranged in a distinctive manner and it is possible to identify the species with reasonable certainty. The other two species M. madagascarensis Peckham & Peckham from Madagascar, and M. celebensis Merian from Celebes are not related to M. spinosus, but belong in the genus Brettus Simon which has recently been revised by the author (Wanless, 1979). In the present paper Macopaeus is redefined; M. spinosus, Brettus celebensis comb, n., and B. madagascarensis comb, n., are described and figured; and a neotype is designated for M. spinosus. The measurements were made in the manner described by Wanless (1978). Genus MACOPAEUS Simon Macopaeus Simon, 1900 : 381. Pollard Department of Zoology, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand KEY WORDS: salticids, salticid eyes, Portia, predatory versatility, aggressive mimicry ABSTRACT Salticids, the largest family of spiders, have unique eyes, acute vision, and elaborate vision-mediated predatory behavior, which is more pronounced than in any other spider group. Diverse predatory strategies have evolved, including araneophagy,aggressive mimicry, myrmicophagy ,and prey-specific preycatch- ing behavior. Salticids are also distinctive for development of behavioral flexi- bility, including conditional predatory strategies, the use of trial-and-error to solve predatory problems, and the undertaking of detours to reach prey. Predatory behavior of araneophagic salticids has undergone local adaptation to local prey, and there is evidence of predator-prey coevolution. Trade-offs between mating and predatory strategies appear to be important in ant-mimicking and araneo- phagic species. The communal web was made up of 1) numerous females' orb-webs surrounding the colony, 2) strong sustainable silks which constitute irregular framework of the colony, and 3) irregular webs forming the center of the colony where males dominantly exist. The numbers of adult females, adult males, and juvenile females were 61, 15 and 2, respectively. The distribution of the developmental stages of the individuals in the colony indicates that the spiders have matured simultaneously. Three other species of spiders, Portia sp., Leucauge sp. and Argyrodes sp., were collected in the colony of P. ra ffrayi. Introduction Members of the genus Philoponella occur in South and Central America and in tropical Asia and the western Pacific (LuBIN, 1986). Many species in this genus are found in colonies consisting of numerous orb-webs built in a common, irregular framework (OPELL, 1979). Philoponella ra ff rayi (SIMON, 1891) was reported as a social spider in Singapore (SIMoN, 1891). However, there have been no reports on the composition of the colony of this species. In this report, the composition of a colony of P, raffrayi observed in Malaysia will be described. -

Generalist predators hunt a wide range of prey that possess various characteristics affecting the predators’ hunting success (e.g., size, ability to detect the threat and defend against it, potential for escape). Therefore, it can be expected that the predator should flexibly react to different prey characteristics, hunting them in prey-specific ways. For a stalking predator a crucial prey feature is its ability to escape. In this study, the alternative prey-catching tactics of a dune-dwelling salticid Yllenus arenarius Menge 1868 were analyzed. Four naturally eaten prey taxa, two with a high ability to escape (Homoptera, Orthoptera) and two with a low ability to escape (Thysanoptera, larvae of Lepidoptera), were used. Numerous differences found between the tactics indicate that Y. arenarius can not only distinguish between different types of prey, but can also employ specific tactics to catch them. The tactics belong to a conditional strategy and are manifested in alternative: a) direction of approach, b) speed of approach, and c) other prey specific behaviors. This paper documents the first record of Phaeacius (Simon 1900) from the Andaman Islands, as well as observations of their behaviour in nature over a period of two months. Observations included predation and feeding on both ants (Technomyrmex albipes) and a salticid ant mimic (Myrmarachne plataleoides), and the maintenance of long, vertical silk lines above an attended egg-sac covered with debris. Introduction Phaeacius (Simon 1900) is a genus of jumping spiders in the subfamily Spartaeinae (Wanless 1984). Many spartaeines are known to be araneophagic (Li 2000) and differ from other salticids in their use of silk to build platforms and simple web structures that aid them in prey capture. Spiders in the genera Portia and Spartaeus, for example, build prey-capture webs while most other salticid spiders typically only build silken retreats to rest, moult and oviposit. Spiders in the genus Phaeacius are not known to build webs or silken retreats, but lay down small, thin sheets of silk above the substrate when moulting or ovipositing (Jackson 1990). Unlike other genera of Salticidae that actively move about in search of prey, Phaeacius is an ambush predator that waits stealthily on the trunks of trees. -

Corrections are given for 58 North American butterfly books. Most of these books are recent. Misidentified figures mostly of adults, erroneous hostplants, and other mistakes are corrected in each book. Suggestions are made to improve future butterfly books. Identifications of figured specimens in Holland's 1931 & 1898 Butterfly Book & 1915 Butterfly Guide are corrected, and their type status clarified, and corrections are made to F. M. Brown's series of papers on Edwards; types (many figured by Holland), because some of Holland's 75 lectotype designations override lectotype specimens that were designated later, and several dozen Holland lectotype designations are added to the J. Pelham Catalogue. Type locality designations are corrected/defined here (some made by Brown, most by others), for numerous names: aenus, artonis, balder, bremnerii, brettoides, brucei (Oeneis), caespitatis, cahmus, callina, carus, colon, colorado, coolinensis, comus, conquista, dacotah, damei, dumeti, edwardsii (Oarisma), elada, epixanthe, eunus, fulvia, furcae, garita, hermodur, kootenai, lagus, mejicanus, mormo, mormonia, nilus, nympha, oreas, oslari, philetas, phylace, pratincola, rhena, saga, scudderi, simius, taxiles, uhleri. Five first reviser actions are made (albihalos=austinorum, davenporti=pratti, latalinea=subaridum, maritima=texana [Cercyonis], ricei=calneva). The name c-argenteum is designated nomen oblitum, faunus a nomen protectum. Three taxa are demonstrated to be invalid nomina nuda (blackmorei, sulfuris, svilhae), and another nomen nudum ( damei) is added to catalogues as a "schizophrenic taxon" in order to preserve stability. Problems caused by old scientific names and the time wasted on them are discussed.
