One of the great small college football rivalries in the country exists between King's College and crosstown foe Wilkes University. Separated by only three blocks, the two neighboring Wilkes-Barre colleges began playing for the Mayor's Cup in 1996. Each year, the two teams battle in the trenches with community and college bragging rights at stake as the victor takes possession of the beautiful silver trophy for the course of the next year. The trophy will be presented to the winning school by Wilkes-Barre Mayor Anythony George at the conclusion of the game. While the competition is fierce, both programs own great respect for the other and the postgame ceremonies reflect the class exhibited by both teams. Each squad lines up at their respective 40-yard lines for the presentation of the Mayor's Cup. One player from both King's and Wilkes is then selected as their team Most Valuable Player of the game with a plaque presented to each player. King's College and crosstown rival Wilkes University annually The colleges once played for the William Pearce Trophy, play in the Mayor's Cup Game with the victor assuming which was retired in 1950. possession of the cup for the next year.

Last year King's won the Mayor's Cup with a 42-14 victory over Wilkes as junior quarterback Zach Whitehead was voted the team Most Valuable Player. Whitehead received his award from Monarch coach Jeff Knarr (L) and King's President Reverend John Ryan, C.S.C. - 12 - 2017 KING’S COLLEGE MONARCHS

- 24 - THE FATHER PATRICK SULLIVAN AWARD

King's senior Tyler Mejasic received the 2016 Sullivan Award from head coach Jeff Knarr, King's President Father John Ryan, C.S.C., 2015 winner Chad Curtice, and the Friends of King's Football prior to the 2016 Homecoming Game

In September 2014, King's instituted the presentation of the Father Patrick J. Sullivan Award. The award honors Father Sullivan, C.S.C., a Holy Cross Priest, a community leader for the working family, a professor of sociology, and the former King’s College Sociology Department Chairman during the 1960’s. Father Sullivan was an essential leader in the development and growth of the greater King’s College community.

King’s College was founded to educate the sons of miners who worked in the coalfields of Pennsylvania. Father Patrick Sullivan truly personified the King’s mission. He championed the cause of hard-working men and women and fought for fair treatment of working families.

Known affectionately as “Sully” by those he mentored and supervised at Hafey-Marian Hall, Father Sullivan also combined fairness and compassion with discipline when dealing with those in his charge. This award was established through the efforts of former King’s football players, many of whom lived at Hafey-Marian Hall during Father Sullivan’s tenure.

The award is presented to a junior or senior member of the football team who has a strong moral compass, demonstrates hard work, discipline, and leadership as a member of the King’s College football team, and who reflects the stated values of the greater King’s College and Holy Cross communities.

The choice of a junior or senior is done with the intention that the recipient has been and will continue to be an example to those who follow, and that the award-winner may assist in developing a worthy recipient for the successive year. The input of teammates, football coaches, Holy Cross Religious, and the athletic department will be considered, and the head football coach will make the final selection.

The award is presented annually before the King’s College Homecoming football game.

The first winner of the Sullivan Award in 2014 was senior defensive back Kris Matthews. The 2015 winner was senior linebacker Chad Curtice, who was a two-year starter. The 2016 winner was senior defensive back Tyler Mejasic. - 25 - Official Football Signals

- 40 - KING’S INTERN COACHING PROGRAM The King's College football program has not only afforded Monarch student-athletes an opportunity to play collegiate football, it also has opened doors for recent college graduates to embark on coaching careers of their own. Beginning in 1992, former collegiate players have joined the King's football program as intern coaches where they learn the many different aspects of the profession. Interns are given ample opportunity to grow with such responsibilities, as position coaching, recruiting, film review and campus tours and visits. After a year of intense experience at King's, each intern has successfully gained the skills necessary to move on to the next level of coaching. Since the program's inception, every intern has secured a high school, graduate assistantship, or collegiate coaching position, upon completion of their duties at King's.

King’s weight room and fitness center stands as one of the finest in small college athletics. Five full rack stations with platforms allow players to perform squats, power cleans, and dead lifts with the best equipment possible.

Among the massive 25,000 pounds of free weights in the weight room are 6,000 pounds of dumbbells. The dumbbell racks run almost the entire length of the front portion of the weight room and constitute two levels. - 50 - KING’S FITNESS CENTER

Among the vast array of weights and weight training equipment in the room are eight Hammer Strength Units. King’s incline bench press program has a proven track of greatly increasing the strength of Monarch players.

The upper floor of the facility houses a large number and variety of cardiovascular machines where players can not only improve or maintain their conditioning, but rehabilitate effectively should an injury occur. - 51 - 2017 KING’S COLLEGE FALL SPORTS SCHEDULES
