Scheduling Notes • Wake Forest will kick off the 2004 season on the road for the fourth straight year, traveling to Clemson Sept. 4. It is the first conference game of the year and also marks the earliest ACC game in WFU history. • The Deacs take on both ACC newcomers in 2004 -- Virginia Tech at home Oct. 9 and Miami on the road Nov. 20. Traditional confer- ence rivals Georgia Tech and Virginia have rotated off WFU’s schedule this year. • WFU also faces future ACC member Boston College in a non-conference matchup at Groves Stadium Sept. 25. • North Carolina A&T was added to the home schedule (Sept. 18) after a home date with Air Force was postponed until 2008. Wake Forest will be the Aggies’ first-ever I-A opponent as the two teams meet on the gridiron for the first time. SPRING PRACTICE SCHEDULE

Battling It Out Keep an eye on these potentially-interesting position battles when preseason camp begins in August... Quarterback: Cory Randolph will enter the fall as the starter after getting the nod in all 12 games a year ago. But redshirt freshman Ben Mauk has shown tremendous improvement and capped off spring drills with an impressive performance in the final scrimmage. Look for Mauk to get at least one series of action per half this fall. Wide Receiver: A host of young receivers will see action this fall. But the starting slot position is up for grabs, literally, between Chris Davis and Willie Idlette. Idlette, the returning starter, has the edge coming out of spring, but both should factor significantly this fall. Tight End: Several players are competing hard at tight end. Redshirt freshman Zac Selmon got the nod at the end of spring, but fifth-year senior R.D. Montgomery is ready to make an impact, as well as redshirt freshman John Tereshinski. Look for fourth-year walk-on Christopher Carrothers and Dan Callahan, once he returns from injury, to compete as well. Defensive End: At the right defensive end spot, returning starter Jyles Tucker is facing a stiff challenge from redshirt freshman Matt Robinson. With Tucker suffering a concussion near the end of spring practice, and Robinson impressing the coaches, the youngster moved into the starting role on the final spring depth chart. Outside Linebacker: Both senior Caron Bracy and sophomore James Adams moved to the strongside linebacker position this spring and both made the transition very well. Bracy, the team’s leading tackler last season, holds the starting role right now, but coaches expect Adams to see a lot of playing time this fall. Free Safety: Sophomore Josh Gattis gained good experience behind senior starter Quintin Williams last season. Meanwhile, Warren Braxton, a two- year starter at strong safety, moved over to free safety this spring and is challenging Gattis at the position. Like at outside linebacker, look for both to make an impact during the season. Cornerback: Senior returning starter Marcus McGruder worked hard this spring to hold off sophomore Riley Swanson, and was hampered in that effort by a shoulder contusion that held him out of the final scrimmage. Coaches have been impressed with both, and expect this battle to re-heat in August. Punt/Kick Returner: As they did last season, Idlette and cornerback Eric King practiced returns this spring. But watch for redshirt freshman wide receiv- er Kevin Marion, a very fast player, to get a look as well. 10 SPRING ROSTERS 2004 Wake Forest Football
