Purpose of role

University of Nottingham School of Medicine is seeking a new Clinical Professor / Clinical Associate Professor of Medical Education (Old Age Psychiatry at Lincoln) to be one of the founding clinicians for the new Lincoln Medical School, a partnership between the Universities of Nottingham and Lincoln.

You will be responsible for establishing the programme of clinical teaching for Health Care of Later Life with particular emphasis on mental disorders, based at Lincoln Medical School (LMS). Once established you will direct a team of highly qualified clinical academics in teaching and learning for the Lincoln Medical School. The new School has welcomed its first cohort of students in Sept 2019, who will start the clinical phase of the BMBS course in February 2022. The Lincoln Medical School is of considerable strategic importance to the University.

The role and responsibilities of the post will change, as the new Lincoln Medical School makes ready to accept its first cohort of students into the clinical phase of the course in February 2022 and then transition to being an established provider of high quality medical education.

You will be part of a team of clinical academics leading innovations in teaching and learning in establishing the new Lincoln Medical School.

You will work closely with the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs (Lincoln), the Clinical Associate Professor of Medical Education (Medicine Specialties), and geriatric medicine clinicians based at United Lincoln Hospitals NHS Trust to deliver the course, You will also work with the academic faculty at the University of Lincoln, and the Director of the Clinical Course, who is leading the development of a new clinical curriculum scheduled for implementation in February 2022. You will be required to lead development and clarification of academic standards for the subject area. You will be required to ensure standardisation for the Health Care of Later Life attachments delivered in and equivalence of student experience for those students compared with the delivery across the various sites. You will also provide quality management of the subject area for the Lincoln Medical School to satisfy the requirements of the GMC.

The post will be based at the University of Lincoln campus, but travel to other sites where the University of Nottingham Medicine course is delivered will also be required.

Whilst this is a full time University appointment, it is a requirement that you maintain regular clinical practice in your recognised speciality of Old Age Psychiatry with Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) and maintain a licence to practice and be revalidated with the GMC. All clinical work must be with LPFT and adhere to an agreed job plan. The post will be spilt 0.5 academic work and 0.5 clinical practice. It is envisaged that following negotiations between the University and LPFT, you will be employed on a single University contract in line with Follett principles, whilst holding an honorary clinical service contract with LPFT.

Reporting to the Vice Dean Clinical Affairs (Professor Gill Pinner), the Clinical Professor / Clinical Associate Professor (Old Age Psychiatry at Lincoln) will be a member of the LMS Education Centre Executive Group. You will work closely with the Associate Dean, University of Lincoln (Professor Danny McLaughlin), Director for Student Wellbeing (Professor Pam Hagan) Director of Clinical Skills (Dr Gill Garden) and Director of Early Clinical and Professional Development (Dr Runa Saha), as well as the future new clinical academic posts at Lincoln Medical School.

The Vice Dean Clinical Affairs will meet monthly with you.

Provisional assignment of Programmed Activities:

5 NHS PAs (including 3.75 PAs of direct clinical care on average per week and 1.25 supporting PAs [SPA])

Teaching

▪ To design, develop, and deliver a range of attachments / courses / programmes of study, including entirely new courses at various levels, as required within the medical specialties at Lincoln Medical School.

▪ To take responsibility for the quality of course delivery, ensuring compliance with the quality standards and regulations of the University, Lincoln Medical School and relevant professional bodies e.g. General Medical Council and Health Education . 1 40% ▪ To apply and develop innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material within the BMBS course at Lincoln Medical School which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.

▪ Coach and advise others on teaching and learning methods.

▪ Supervise and examine both undergraduate and postgraduate students within Medical Education e.g. PhD, MMedSci, BMedSci students, both internally and externally.

▪ Set and mark coursework, examine courses and supervise and advise students. Monitor student progress and retention e.g. as personal tutor.

▪ To make a significant contribution to the curriculum leadership, developing course proposals within the teaching and learning programmes at the Lincoln Medical School e.g. through delivery of training to staff and delivery of course modules relating to the medical specialties.

▪ To contribute to the accreditation of courses and quality control processes. Tackle issues affecting the quality of delivery within the scope of own level of responsibility, referring more serious matters to others, as appropriate.

▪ Take a lead responsibility for the course delivery at Lincoln Medical School in one of the following areas to be negotiated: o Admissions, o Clinical Phase Assessments o Professionalism o Special Study Modules o Student Electives o Appeals\Complaints\Academic Misconduct o UG o UG leadership and management course o MAST

▪ Participate in Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) including on TEF panels, teaching and learning strategies and external reviews.

In addition, for appointment at Professorial Level:

• Plan and lead the development and implementation of the teaching and learning strategy in collaboration with other senior academic staff in the School of Medicine.

▪ Provide strategic and intellectual leadership of the undergraduate educational programme in medicine specialties for the BMBS course, overseeing the design, development and review of curricula, and lead the development of innovative and commercially viable approaches to course delivery and assessment whilst ensuring that teaching delivery achieves the educational standards of the Lincoln Medical School and General Medical Council as regulator.

▪ Lead the development and clarification of academic standards for the School of Medicine teaching and learning strategy, aligning medical specialties at Lincoln Medical School with the University’s overall quality assurance framework.

▪ Deliver lectures and provide advice, instruction and examination in the subject at all levels, from undergraduate teaching to advising on postgraduate research in medical education.

• Provide intellectual leadership of the School’s academic community as a whole, providing direction and mentoring for less experienced colleagues. Lead, appoint, manage and develop individuals and/or teams to deliver the teaching plans. Foster inter-disciplinary team working to develop team spirit and team coherence.

Research

▪ Engage and support research in the medical education field, through personal contribution, the direct supervision of others and promoting research and development within the department.

Engagement, Communication, Administration

▪ Provide academic and organisational leadership to those working within the Lincoln Medical School (LMS), by coordinating resources and the work of others to ensure the effective delivery of the BMBS course, and agree objectives and work plans with the team.

▪ To lead and develop internal (e.g. by chairing/participating in University Committees) and external relationships (e.g. with United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT), Health Education England (HEE), Medical Schools Council (MSC)) to foster future collaboration.

▪ To act as an external examiner to Institutions and provide professional advice.

▪ Maintain liaison with the General Medical Council over standards for delivery of medical education at the Lincoln site, as well as the fitness to practice of students and graduates of the University from the Lincoln School.

Clinical Academic Job Plan

A formal job plan will be agreed between you, the Vice Dean of Clinical Affairs and the Medical Director/Clinical Director from LPFT, within three months after the commencement date of the appointment. The job plan may need approval by the relevant Royal College before the appointee can take up the post.

The job plan will then be reviewed annually following the annual Joint Appraisal meeting for clinical academics involving appraisers from both the University and the NHS Trust. The job plan will be a prospective agreement setting out the appointee’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

The role holder will provide appropriate clinical care and support at Consultant level to the Older Adults Mental Health Services within Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

This post offers the flexibility for the role holder to work in one of three main services\sub-speciality areas within LPFT, to be agreed upon appointment. These are:

Inpatient dementia care

Based at Witham Court, North Hykeham, Lincoln, the role holder will work alongside another full time colleague to provide consultant input to the 18 bed inpatient dementia ward. The post holder will be responsible for approximately 2/3rds of the patients on the ward, however RC responsibility and cross-cover on University/Academic days will be provided by the other colleague working on the ward. The ward is also supported by a multidisciplinary team, specialty doctor, physician associate and trainees.

Community services

Based at Witham Court, North Hykeham, Lincoln, the role holder will work alongside another fulltime colleague to provide comprehensive community psychiatric service to the North West area of Lincolnshire(Gainsborough and South Lincoln) for those over the age of 65 with dementia and functional psychiatric disorders including patients with early onset dementia. The post holder will be an integral member of the community mental health Team (CMHT) based in Lincoln and will not be responsible for any inpatients. There is a full time specialty doctor attached to the team as well as a multidisciplinary team. The post holder will have admitting rights to inpatient wards for Older Adults with acute mental health problems within Lincolnshire but all care and treatment will be provided by a separate dedicated inpatient multidisciplinary team.

Liaison

Based at Lincoln County Hospital, the role holder will work alongside another fulltime adult mental consultant colleague to provide additional older adult expertise to the service team.

In total the 5 programmed activities will be dedicated to one of these areas with clinical duties and responsibilities to include:

1. Undertake relevant duties as may be identified to meet the needs of the service 2. Provide cover for colleagues during periods of absence. 3. Carry out teaching duties as required and take an active part in the Postgraduate Medical Education programme and in the teaching of junior medical staff. Be involved in the education of nursing staff, General Practitioners and other clinical professions. Attend regularly departmental team meetings. 4. Have continuing responsibility for patients in his / her care and for the proper functioning of the Older Adults Division. 5. Take part in team, department, regional and national audits. 6. Lead and support the management and development of Old Age Psychiatry in the Trust. 7. At Associate Professor level you may be required to participate in the Consultant Psychiatry On call rota (approx. 1 in 16)

Lincoln Medical School is one of the latest series of new Medical Schools opening as part of the Government initiative to expand the medical workforce. Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) is the principal provider of NHS mental health, learning disability and social care services in Lincolnshire as well as providing some services in neighbouring areas of the country.

The work of the Trust is increasingly community-based. You are expected to participate in teaching & training of junior staff, medical students & trainees all aspects of Medicine & to supervise junior medical staff within the specialty. All Consultant staff are encouraged to undertake a formal “Training the Trainers” course. However, formal teaching qualifications are desirable in a University Academic. The university has a mechanism for supporting academics to develop appropriate skills and gain formal accreditation in teaching.

Professional Standards The Clinical Director is managerially responsible for all activity and personnel in the directorate in which the appointee will work. The Medical Director, Dr Ananta Dave, has overall responsibility for the professional performance of clinicians, including of those holding Honorary Contracts with LPFT. All clinicians are expected to comply with management arrangements in place, to follow the guidelines on practice laid down by the General Medical Council’s “Maintaining Good Medical Practice”, and to be accountable to the Trust for their actions and the quality of their work. A yearly Joint Clinical and Academic Appraisal is carried out.
