By Vanessa Teo It has just been a week since Singapore celebrated her birthday with dazzling performances taking place at the Floating Platform, as well as at the Padang with Young NTUC holding the fort. The significant day saw many history-making events taking place, such as the formation of the world’s largest human flag, as well as the first NTUC ‘U’ hallmark flag. At the main parade, it was also the first time that Young NTUC performers were asked to take part in the acts to engage the audience. Be it at the main parade or at the Padang, members of the Labour Movement who took part in the celebrations have burnt countless weekends and late nights just to ensure they delivered their best. And the ‘never say die’ spirit which members displayed, be it Young NTUC performers or union members, truly resonated with the Labour Movement’s as they pushed their limits to overcome challenges that came their way. One such individual who overcame her personal challenges was Madam Saffiah Abdul Kader who is a Senior Associate in NTUC’s Information Technology Department (ITD). With the encouragement given by fellow colleagues, friends, and staff from Young NTUC, Madam Saffiah was left with a beautiful memory that she will never forget. Below is her account of her journey with National Day Parade 2011:

hank you to Young NTUC for inviting me and the rest of the young NTUC members, who have now become my friends, to join in NDP 2011.They have done a great job, Tleaving wonderful memories for us to remember on 9 August 2011. “Even though it was only a two minutes performance on stage, we had most of the fun happening offstage, from the first training at Kranji Camp to the Floating Platform. At the beginning, we didn’t know each other, and were like strangers. But after many rehearsals, we became like one family where we shared fun, jokes and laughter, and basically went crazy together! “The rehearsals were tiring, so we had our own fun by taking photos in the toilet, posing at the Old Chang Kee van, playing monopoly and doing many things that can make us laugh. Now when I look back at the photographs, I will miss the rehearsals we had on Saturdays, as well as the many months that we have spent together. It will always be a sweet memory for me. “I had family commitments and a heel problem too, but because of these friends and the Young NTUC staff that encouraged me, I did not give up and actually made it through to perform at the main parade on National Day. Majulah Singapore! We will, we will rock you, Majulah!” To document the happy memories shared, Mdm Saffiah too created her own photo montage to capture the precious moments spent together which she would like to share with the rest of the Labour Movement family as well.

In the most uniquely Singapore way, NTUC ITD Senior Associate Saffiah Abdul Kader created her own photo montage to capture beautiful memories she had at National Day Parade 2011. 18 workingfor • inclusivegrowth A Real Good Deal For Real Estate Agents U Associate Programme Reaches Out To Institute Of Estate Agents, Singapore

Correction There is a correction in the caption for the photo on story: “$370,000 Raised By AUPDRW’s Book Channelled To Members”. The caption should have been: The union was fortunate to get support from the National Environment Agency (NEA) to tap on the company’s flexi-dollars for its members to travel overseas for the first time. And all the funds raised from the union’s book launch three years ago have been channelled to improve training and welfare assistance for members.
