5 COACH’S REPORT 2007

Season 2007 is one that I will remember for a very long time. From the outset of pre-season training (November 2006) there was a sense of determination and a noticeable feeling of high expectation amongst the player group. As summer training progressed the dedication of the players continually lifted with many achieving personal bests in all forms of fi tness testing.

The leadership coming from within group was excellent and all players took ownership of what was being done in order to achieve their very best. Many discussions were held, where all players were given the opportunity to contribute ideas. It was pleasing to hear many of them take up this opportunity. As the season approached the majority of the playing list was in excellent physical condition and as a group the players had set themselves some challenging yet attainable goals.

As the season began it became clearer that this group of players were bonding well and that they had an inner resolve that was going to test every other region in the competition. This season was very much a journey and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. To sit, witness and be apart of the development of the Jets of 2007 is something that was a great thrill.

From a competitiveness point of view the boys achieved their goal. We managed to defeat 10 of the 11 other regions, with Oakleigh being the only team we did not beat. More than the score line though, the boys played an uncompromising brand of football that was intense, relentless, accountable and enjoyable to watch. Every player who wore our guernsey this season is to be commended for his desire and high work ethic.

It was with great pride that we would arrive at a venue knowing that wherever we were and whoever the opponent was, that they knew they Mark Neeld 2007 TAC Cup Coach were in for a torrid experience. Yes, I agree it was disappointing to end the year the way did however, there were many giant strides that were taken by this player group this season.

Thanks must go to the many staff of the Western Jets. The coaches (football and fi tness), the runners, the trainers, the medical staff, the statisticians and the match day ‘crew’ for all their work and undeniable commitment. The role of these staff in a development club is extremely diffi cult and it was very satisfying to see their smiling faces when the boys performed at their best.

Thank you also to the parents for all the driving, the barracking, the supporting and your unbelievable commitment. It is a long year of highs and lows and without you the club would not be able to function as well as it does.

Finally I would like to thank Shane Sexton for the support he has given me personally all year. Shane has an amazing work ethic and on behalf of the club I would like to say thanks.

Mark Neeld

The Western AFCA also operated Multicultural Department. The Western AFCA nominated coaches in all categories for the State Coach of the Year Awards. The Regional Awards night was combined with the North West AFCA with over 170 people in attendance and featured a key note address from AFL Victoria High Performance Coach Leon Harris. Congratulations to the region’s winners: Auskick – Peter Lowe, Melton Auskick Junior – Rod Ford, Williamstown Juniors Youth – Tony Walshe, Spotswood FC Senior – Troy Chapman, Melton South FC

Thank you to Western Region AFCA President Paul Gillman and the regional executive for their support and assistance this year. Football in Schools Project This year saw the expansion of the Football in Schools program to include St Albans, while still continuing in Melton. Jim Clancy was the coordinator and did an outstanding job once again. The impact of this program in Melton is undisputed. Before the program started Auskick numbers were at 200. In 2006 they jumped to 257 and in 2007 they climbed to 300. During 2007 the Melton Central Junior Football Club was established and ran three junior teams in the RDFL, with no impact on the existing Melton clubs.

The St Albans area defi nitely represents a challenge for the game. In a diverse multicultural community AFL isn’t necessarily the game of choice. Some hard yards need to be done.

8 Conclusion Thank you to every one for making my fi rst year in the role an extremely enjoyable one. Thanks to Shane Sexton for the opportunity to join the Western Jets and for his support and advice over the course of the year in the role.

It was never going to be easy to replace, John Batty and I thank him for his assistance whenever I needed it. Also to Andrew Johnston, Calder Development Manager, for his guidance during the course of the year.

Thanks to Mick Daniher, Anton Grbac, Steve Teakel, Trevor Robertson and Keith Burns for their help and patience in my fi rst year.

Finally to Brendan Curry, Trent Mosbey, Brad Budge, Alan Hales and all the Jets coaches and staff, thank you for your help, advice and support over the year. I greatly appreciate it. Looking forward to “growing the game” even more in 2008. The Western Jets would like to thank Major Associate Sponsor Werribee Mazda for their continuing support of the club. 21 L120 PROGRAM

The Western Jets seek to develop their players holistically; both on the fi eld as footballers and also off the fi eld. Part of this is helping in their development as young drivers. With all players at the age where they are just beginning to drive, the TAC sponsorship of the competition is a perfect fi t. TAC research indicates that if a driver gains at least 120 hours practice as an L-plater their chances of being seriously injured or killed in an accident are vastly diminished. By visiting the Learner’s Log website (www.learnerslog.com) players are able to electronically record driving time and conditions which aids in their development as drivers.

The Western Jets this year were acknowledged at the Morrish Medal count by the TAC for its outstanding contribution to the L120 Hours Make it Your Goal Program. Each TAC Cup club participated in two phases of the program. The fi rst phase was for players within the club to practice for their P-plates and log as many hours as possible on the TAC learners log website (mentioned above). The second phase was to participate in a community activity that would also encourage, strengthen and broaden the L120 message. Four schools participated in this component of the Western Jets’ program. These schools included: Werribee Secondary College, Melton Secondary College, Essendon-Keilor College and Caroline Springs Secondary College.

The Western Jets complement the schools involved for their outstanding support of this holistic development program conducted during school hours. The club also extends its sincere appreciation to the TAC and its staff for their continued support of the TAC Cup competition and also in providing this signifi cant initiative which ensures our young people, surely our most valuable resource, are much safer when they join the general community on our roads.
