The Mallard Issue 341 March 2020

We Really Need Your Help! Your Village Needs You! Neighbourhood Plan The December and January editions of the Mallard had information about and a re- quest for parishioners to consider getting involved with a village ‘Neighbourhood Plan’. Such a ‘Plan’, if realized, indicates where housing development takes place within the village, along with the type and number of dwellings involved. The Parish Council can only progress with a ‘Neighbourhood Plan’ if there is support from parishioners for one. To date, we have had some response but it is felt that more parishioners are required for the process to meet the necessary numbers suitable for starting such a plan. Basically, if sufficient parishioners get involved, the principal tasks of the committee will be, together with the Parish Council, to seek and collate the views of residents, businesses and others in our community in order to form a policy. Once that is com- pleted, there will be a village referendum on the policy. If accepted, it will form part of the KLWNBC’s Local Plan development for our village. In short, you, the parishioners, decide ‘what, where and when’. It will take time to compete such a plan. Funding is available but it will not happen unless there is support from you - the Parishioners. So, if you want to control how Great Massingham expands please get in touch with:- Cllr. Jon Cole, 07990 705 113 or Cllr. Peter James, 521706 or Cllr. Mick Wingell, 520 369. Please, Please volunteer to be part of this important process.

‘Histry Bits’.... Who was Charles Dewar? Charles Dewar was a member of the famous Scotch whisky distilling family, founded in Perth in 1846. In the early 1920s, he purchased Abbey House from the Marquis of Cholmondeley and lived there until his death in 1933, at the age of 75. He took a great interest in village life, helping to finance the construction of the original village hall, which was built by the villagers in 1924, using their own unpaid, voluntary labour. In 1937, his widow Mrs. Dewar gifted a parcel of land behind the village hall which became the cur- rent playing field. Mallard News HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED Growing your Own vegetables and fruit? Like the idea but not sure if you can do it? Here are the answers to a few ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ from the Committee of the Great Massingham Allotment Association.

1. No, you do not need to have specialist knowledge to start growing your own pro- duce! All the information you need can be found on the back of the seed packet! 2. No, you do not need a lot of expensive equipment to get started. A few decent implements - a digging fork, a hoe for weeding - will get you going; these can often be picked up at auctions and second hand shops, or borrowed. 3. No, you do not need to commit huge amounts of your time. A couple of sessions of hard work in the spring and, after that, a potter daily or a few visits per week will keep on top of the jobs. 4. Yes, you can have a small plot or share a piece with a friend. 5. Gardening is suitable for people of all ages and you don’t need to be particularly fit and strong; just willing. 6. Will you save money? Probably not! But you will certainly eat better and enjoy some good company, peaceful times and satisfactory outdoor exercise. All good! 7. Yes, you can come and have a look round and talk to some of the other allotment holders who are always pleased to welcome potential new members. Call Gill Goold on 07508 242 223. Please read the notice of our AGM on page 16. Come along& join us and have a chat.

Happy 103rd Birthday to Miriam Flower! any of you will remember Miriam’s 100th birthday when the Great M Massingham Primary School children went along to her home in Wea- senham Road and sang Happy Birthday to her and presented her with a special card and a cake. Well, now she has just had her 103rd birthday! Miriam is now living in East Bilney Nursing Home but, with the help of Janice and Jill who take a copy of the Mallard to her each month, she is able to keep in touch with all that is happening. Miriam and her husband Bertie were very much involved in the village in their younger days. Miriam was chief fund- raiser for the Church and organised fash- ion shows and produce stalls to name but two of her projects. You can see them in the picture right, with their dog Pepper, sitting on ‘Bertie’s Bench’ (overlooking the pond by Sandy Lane) which was presented to them by the Millenium Committee in 2002 as a thank you to them both. Those were the days! Happy Birthday Miriam! Thank you for all you did for our village and Church Sorry the picture was so small last month. It is always difficult making space. We’re glad Gert & Daisy were able to get to your party. (see below)

Gert & Daisy….. We hev bin told that so far this year we hev bin missed! We went ter Mrs Flower’s buthday party and tuk a copy of the Mallard but that photo wus so small she couldn’t see her picture! Local Walking Challenge Raises Karl & Anthony all kitted out. over £4,000 for Treatment Great Massingham resident, Karl Harrison, and his brother Anthony Harrison with support from friends Ben Clarke and Craig Cunningham, walked 92 miles along Peddars Way this January, to fundraise for 20 month old Ireland Banham. Ireland, who lives in Ipswich, is the daughter of Karl and Anthony’s cousin and she is fighting stage four neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer, following diagnosis last July. They decided to take on the challenge of walking to boost the funds needed – in excess of £200,000 – to pay for Ireland to go to America for treatment as it is not available in the UK. The Bradley Lowery Foundation is also supporting the fundraising. Since diagnosis, Ireland has received chemotherapy and undergone a 12-hour opera- tion. The treatment in America would hope to lower the risk of a relapse but she will only be able to receive this once she is in remission. Some Massingham residents already know about the challenge and the fundraising and both Massingham and Harpley schools have also helped by donating but we thought we’d spread the word further. You can still boost their fundraising, by visiting their fundraising page at justgiving.com/fundraising/harrison-karl. Please help.

Mallard News Village Hall Kitchen gets Five Star Rating You’ll be pleased to hear after the waiting, the time and the effort and, not let’s forget the money raised, the Village Hall Kitchen has received a Five Star Food Hygiene Certificate! After a recent assessment carried out by Borough Council inspectors the Hall kitchen has been rated ‘Very Good’. This achievement makes the Hall an even better choice as a venue for your celebrations. At the inspection, the officer checked the following three elements:- • How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored. • The physical condition of the enterprise – including cleanliness, layout, light- ing, ventilation, pest control and other facilities. • How the business manages ways of keeping food safe, looking at processes, training and systems to ensure good hygiene is maintained. The officer can then assess the level of confidence in standards being maintained in the fu- ture. One of the key objectives of the on-going refurbishment of the Village Hall was to make it more attractive and affordable for ‘Lifetime Celebrations’ and ‘Events on your Doorstep’. Now, when you hire the Hall for that special event you have the option, for just a small additional sum, of having access to a first-class well- equipped kitchen. Village Hall Trustees

Message to All Parishioners from Rev’d Judith OurT livesO Aconsist LL ofP comings ARISHIONERS and goings, beginnings and endings – sometimes happy, sometimes sad - but more often a bit mixed. Our son Joseph is about to embark on a new life adventure. He is going to live in Wales in the same Cam- phill Community – Glasallt Fawr - where his younger brother Luke has been living for nine years. It will be good for them to be together, albeit rather a long way away. We are delighted for Joseph but with a twinge of parental trepidation at how he’ll cope with change. There is a deepening crisis in adult Social care that I think we are all aware of. There are not enough resources to meet current needs (which seems to apply to every aspect of life – health, education, Local Government, Policing etc. etc.), and those needs are set to rise as the baby-boomer generation reaches later old age. The people who work in the care sector such as personal assistants, medical professionals and managers in residential care are compassionate individuals who do essential work brilliantly - but they are not valued or adequately compensated for the hugely important work they do. Nor are the quality controls in place to ensure consistency throughout this booming sector. My mother has recently entered residential care locally after living independently, with minimal support, in Nottingham until her ninetieth year. This is a massive change for her and the family but it was the best option for her and she is now receiving the care she needs – and looking better for it. We may all reach a point in our lives when we are no longer up to running a household, paying the bills, managing domestic tasks such as preparing meals, doing the laundry and the garden. We may hope that when the time comes there will be Social Services to support us and give us the help we need but how this will all be paid for is a huge chal- lenge for our times. As people live longer their health needs too may become more com- plex -in addition to the practical help they need. We must have joined -up thinking at governmental level in this and also, I believe, we need active care in our communities so that we can watch over one another with compassion as the norm. The church has an important role to play in this but our regular church members are getting older with in- creasing needs of their own and numbers are dwindling. It is a challenging picture across the entire country. At one time milk bottles piling up on the doorstep were an indication that something was amiss and that a neighbourly knock at the door was needed. Nowadays, few of us have our milk delivered and social media, though omnipresent, doesn’t have a caring heart in the same way. Jesus enjoins us: “Love one another as I have loved you.” The sacrificial love that Jesus models for us reveals the depth of his love for each one of us. We should respond to his example in spirit, at least. This Spring, let’s reinvigorate the spirit of neighbourliness, of being the caring communities I know we are. I do know that many of you already do this – thank you. But let’s all do a better job of caring for one another. That visit you haven’t got around to making - make it now, that voluntary work for a local homeless- ness charity you intended - do it now. Show someone that you care. With God’s blessings this Lent and always, Judith x

Everyone please help with a problem at Walcups corner! We have a dog owner who has been bagging the dog’s ‘poo’ and throwing the full, black poo bags into the garden of the cottage at the corner of Walcups Lane & Station Road. Who could be so unreasonable? Why does this happen? Most dog owners, as we know, are responsible and reasonable but this one isn’t. Large quantities of bags were removed from the garden recently and it’s still happening! Signs saying - ‘Please stop throwing black bags of dog poo into my garden.
