0.1 Indefinite Integrals 0.1 Indefinite Integrals Integration is a formalization of the process of antidifferentiation. When we differentiate a function, we lose some information about the function - although we know how it is changing we don’t know where it started from. Thus, when we go through the reverse process of differentiation, we end up with a family of functions rather than just a single function. Because of this we need an initial value to find a unique solution to a differential equation. We define the indefinite integral in order to encompass the fact that we have a family of functions. Definition 0.1.1 (Indefinite Integral). We call the set of all antiderivatives of f the indefinite integral of f, denoted by Z f(x)dx. The symbol R is an integral sign. The function f is the called the integrand and x is the variable of integration. We say that dx is a differential of x. If we know any antiderivative F to a given function f, then we simply find the indefinite integral as Z f(x)dx = F (x) + c, because the expression on the right-hand side represents all possible antiderivatives of f(x), if we let c be an arbitrary constant. When we find the indefinite integral of a function f(x) we say that we integrate the integrand f(x). Thus, the process of evaluating an integral is referred to as integration. Unfortunately, the notation we have introduced for the indefinite integral probably looks rather arcane. As we move further into the study of integration, the reason for the notation will become more clear. For the moment let us note that this notation is based on the initial developments of calculus, where the notion of infinitesimal and differential were prevalent. The resemblance of R and an elongated S is not accidental. This notation reflects the relationship between integration and summation. Integration is essentially the summation of the area underneath the integrand f(x) over intervals of infinitesimal length. The differential dx represents an infinitesimal change in x, which represents the intervals of infinitesimal length over which the summation involved in integration occurs. When it will not lead to confusion we will refer to the indefinite integral as simply the integral. The term indefinite integral is used to distinguish the process of indefinite and definite integration (which we will consider soon). Although both of these concepts are related to the area underneath a function, the indefinite integral is a function, whereas the definite integral is a constant, which is given by the area underneath a function over a set interval (defined by the limits of integration, which are not present in an indefinite integral). Since the process of (indefinite) integration is an inverse to differentiation, we can derive many rules for integration using rules we already know for differentiation. What this means is that integration satisfies the following two properties. Theorem 0.1.2 (Linearity of Integration). Let a ∈ R. Z Z 1. αf(x)dx = α f(x)dx. Z Z Z 2. (f + g)(x)dx = f(x)dx + g(x)dx. Example 5. Evaluate the indefinite integral of −2x−3 + 4x1/2 . Thus, it is cleaner to just replace −2c + 4d with a single c, as both are capable of representing any arbitrary constant. 2 Corresponding to other differentiation rules we have learned, we can evaluate a number of other integrals, such as Z exdx = ex + c Z cos(x)dx = sin(x) + c Z sin(x)dx = − cos(x) + c Note that the negative sign corresponds to the integral of the sine function, just as the negative sign corresponds to the derivative of cosine. This list is far from exhaustive, as we have results for other trigonometric functions as well as the inverse trigonometric functions. Rather than repeating all of these results here we simply note that the corresponding rule for integration can be read directly from the result for differentiation. We’d also like to note Z 1 dx = ln |x| + c. x 1 In the above formula we use the magnitude of x, |x|, because although x is defined for negative x, ln(x) is not. In fact, the natural logarithm is usually defined in terms of the above integral, and then can be shown to be the inverse of the exponential function. However, since we did not have access to integration at the time we introduced the natural logarithm, we defined it as the inverse function, and now see that it satisfies the above integral. The annotation consists of hyperlinks leading to biographies of the mathematicians appearing in the poem, and to explanations of the mathematical notions and ideas presented in the poem. The intention is to celebrate the history of this venerable number in verse, and to put the mathematical ideas connected with it in historical and artistic context. The poem may also be used by educators in any mathematics course in which the number e appears, and those are as varied as e's multifaceted history. The sections following the poem provide suggestions and resources for the use of the poem as a pedagogical tool in a variety of mathematics courses. They also place these suggestions in the context of other efforts made by educators in this direction by briefly outlining the uses of historical mathematical poems for teaching mathematics at high-school and college level. Both are in- troduced in many high school curricula, as they have widespread applications in both the scientific and financial worlds. In fact, as recently as 50 years ago, many high school math- ematics curricula included considerable study of “Tables of the Logarithm Function” (“log tables”), because this was prior to the invention of the hand-held calculator. During the Great Depression of the 1930’s, many out-of-work mathematicians and scientists were em- ployed as “calculators” or “computers” to develop these tables by hand, laboriously using difference equations, entry by entry! Here, we are going to use our knowledge of the Fun- damental Theorem of Calculus and the Inverse Function Theorem to develop the properties of the Logarithm Function and Exponential Function. Of course, we don’t need tables of these functions any more because it is possible to buy a hand-held electronic calculator for as little as $10.00, which will compute any value of these functions to 10 decimal places or more! 1 2 CHAPTER 8. The resulting indefinite logarithmic quantities naturally play a mathematical role that is closely analogous to that of dimensional physi- cal quantities (such as length) in that, although these quantities have no definite interpretation as ordinary numbers, nevertheless the ratio of two of these entities is naturally well-defined as a specific, ordinary number, just like the ratio of two lengths. As a result, indefinite logarithm objects can serve as the basis for logarithmic spaces, which are natural systems of logarithmic units suitable for measuring any quantity defined on a log- arithmic scale. He wrote numerous books and countless articles covering a vast range of topics in pure and applied mathematics, physics, astronomy, geodesy, cartography, music, and shipbuilding – in Latin, French, Russian, and German. It is not only that he produced an enormous body of work; with unbelievable creativity, he brought innovative ideas to every topic on which he wrote and indeed opened up several new areas of mathematics. Pictured on the Swiss postage stamp of 2007 next to the polyhedron from DÜRER ’s Melencolia and EULER ’s polyhedral formula is a portrait of EULER from the year 1753, in which one can see that he was already suffering from eye problems at a relatively young age. EULER was born in Basel, the son of a pastor in the Reformed Church. His mother also came from a family of pastors. Since the local school was unable to provide an education commensurate with his son’s abilities, EULER ’s father took over the boy’s education. At the age of 14, EULER entered the University of Basel, where he studied philosophy. He completed his studies with a thesis comparing the philosophies of DESCARTES and NEWTON . At 16, at his father’s wish, he took up theological studies, but he switched to mathematics after JOHANN BERNOULLI , a friend of his father’s, convinced the latter that LEONHARD possessed an extraordinary mathematical talent. At 19, EULER won second prize in a competition sponsored by the French Academy of Sciences with a contribution on the question of the optimal placement of a ship’s masts (first prize was awarded to PIERRE BOUGUER , participant in an expedition of LA CONDAMINE to South America).
