PROCESS-ORIENTED PATTERNS FOR CONCURRENT SOFTWARE ENGINEERING A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF KENT IN THE SUBJECT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY. By Adam T. Sampson 2008 Abstract Concurrency is unavoidable in modern software development, owing to the increasing complexity of computer systems and the widespread use of parallel computer hard- ware. Conventional approaches to concurrency are fraught with danger: in particular, uncontrolled access to shared resources, poor scalability and the inability of the pro- grammer to reason about the correctness of a program. Process-oriented programming is a software design approach that offers solutions to many of these problems. A process-oriented program is constructed as a network of isolated, concurrent processes that interact only using synchronisation objects such as channels and barriers. Using techniques drawn from CSP and the p-calculus, de- sign rules can be constructed that enable the programmer to easily build systems with known safety properties. Since process-oriented programs expose by their nature a high degree of explicit concurrency, they can be efficiently distributed across multiple processors and clusters of machines. This thesis describes a pattern language for the engineering of process-oriented pro- grams. Design patterns describe reusable, adaptable solutions to common problems that may arise during the design and development of a system. A pattern language serves the dual purposes of documenting the proven design solutions developed by a community, and providing a common technical vocabulary. The patterns described in this thesis are drawn from a variety of existing process- oriented real-world applications, and have been used to construct new applications in fields such as embedded systems, multimedia processing, and complex systems simu- lation. -

Click on each title to hear an audio clip. Sound Learning and Early Childhood Support for Literacy There are millions of sounds in the world, and the most powerful of all is the human voice. From infancy, children become attuned to their parents’ voices as well as the noises around them: the weather outside, road traffic, music, dogs barking, and so much more. These sounds create a bridge from the child’s developing brain to the very beginnings of early literacy --what children know about language, reading, and writing before they can actually read or write. A good story, well told, increases vocabulary and assists children in learning how words are put together to construct meaning. The more words a child hears, especially “rare” words not used in everyday conversation, the more likely they are to be successful in school. In presentations to preschool teachers and librarians, audiobook-friendly picture book author Jamie A. Swenson talks about using both rare words and onomatopoeia in her books for young children, specifically to help grow vocabulary and to encourage children, and the grown-ups who share books with them, to have fun with language. Both Swenson and Michelle R. Weirich, Lead Early Childhood Education Instructor at Blackhawk Technical College in Beloit, Wisconsin, advocate using picture book read- alongs with young children at home, in libraries, and in preschool classrooms. Swenson’s experiences working with young children in the library setting has led to her understanding the important role played by picture book read-alongs in supporting the six principles of early literacy: print motivation, print awareness, phonological awareness, vocabulary, narrative skills, and letter knowledge. -

Word 97 to 2007 As this is an ‘Open’ (editable) Word Document, care needs to be taken to ensure that you do not accidentally delete part or all of a Hymn! To avoid problems of this nature always use ‘Copy’ and ‘Paste’ do not use the ‘Cut’ option. Best practice. 1. Navigate to the required hymn – Using ‘Ctrl + Left Click’ 2. Highlight the required text and then select ‘Copy’ 3. Change to your working document and then ‘Paste’ the text where you want it. 4. Return to the Hymnal and then ‘Left Click’ on a Blank (White) non text area. 5. To return to the Alphabetical Index ‘Ctrl + Left Click’ on the Back to First Letter Index at the end of any hymn. 6. If you think that you may have accidentally deleted part or all of a hymn – Don’t Panic! – Simply ‘Close’ the Hymnal and say ‘No’ when it asks you if you want to save changes. You can then re-open it and continue working. 7. If you need to correct any of a hymns text, punctuation, spelling or phrasing remember that you will need to save any changes in the usual way.
