For all the success Deputy Minister=s sons have enjoyed both on the racetrack and in the breeding shed- - and it has been considerable--his daughters have done just as much to turn the spotlight onto this influential son of Vice Regent. Deputy Minister=s second crop, born back in 1986, was headed by that outstanding filly Open Mind, whose record of 12 victories from 17 starts in her first two seasons was enough to earn her the Eclipse Award for her division both at two and three. History repeated itself with Deputy Minister=s third crop, thanks to Go For Wand. This magnificent filly had compiled a record of 10 wins and a pair of seconds from 12 starts prior to her tragic accident, when trying to repel Bayakoa=s challenge, in the 1990 Breeders= Cup Distaff.

Her dedication to the Fund was consistent with her lifetime of tireless commitment to a variety of civic and professional organizations here in New York. She will long be remembered not only as a role model for women involved in the practice of law but also as a forceful advocate for the humane treatment of all animals.

  • Results of the 15Th Victoria Mile (G1)
FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: May 17, 2020 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 15TH VICTORIA MILE (G1) In accordance with the restructuring of JRA racing program for fillies/mares executed in the 2006 season, the Victoria Mile was established to give the older fillies/mares a stage to prove their ability among their own sex, in addition to the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, which had been the only G1 reserved for older fillies/mares. While the Queen Elizabeth is run over 2,200 meters and held in mid-November, the Victoria Mile is held in spring and provides female milers a chance to claim a G1 title without having a tough competition in a mixed field. The race, however, attracts not only fillies/mares suited to the mile distance but also outstanding runners from the middle-long distance group. Past victors include two-time Horse of the Year winner Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet; ’09), 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista (JPN, by Special Week; ’10) and 2010 fillies’ Triple Crown winner Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha; ’11). Meanwhile, both Verxina (JPN, by Deep Impact) and Straight Girl (JPN, by Fuji Kiseki) claimed consecutive Victoria Mile titles in 2013-14 and 2015-16, respectively. The top three finishers will earn automatic starting positions in the French G1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1,600m) where not only will they be exempted from paying registration fee but will be given a total of €20,000 as a transportation subsidy. The race also joined the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series this year, enabling its winner to earn automatic starting position in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1, 1,900m).

Follow Racing “Down the Stretch” on SiriusXM Radio By NYTBDF Executive Director Tracy Egan New York breeders and fans of New York racing will hear something new on tomorrow’s SiriusXM “Down the Stretch” broadcast with hosts Bill Finley and Dave Johnson: promotions for the NY-bred program and the announcement of this month’s NY-Bred of the Month. The show airs each Saturday morning on satellite radio from ten a.m. to noon. If you’re still in your car for the 5:05 post time of the Grade III Gotham for three- year-olds, follow the race when Finley and Johnson return to cover the action at Aqueduct. SiriusXM subscribers can listen on Sirius 93 and XM 209 or online at www.siriusxm.com. The $400,000 Gotham is often a stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. Show producer Ed Pappas explains the coverage, saying “The Gotham has never before been a part of our Road to the Derby package, but when you get a $400,000 purse and a great field that includes the 2-year-old champion, it’s a race you have to include.” Down the Stretch will return to Aqueduct Racetrack on April 7 for the Grade-1 $1 million Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial.
