    Speech By Meaghan Scanlon MEMBER FOR GAVEN Record of Proceedings, 20 March 2018 MAIDEN SPEECH Ms SCANLON (Gaven—ALP) (3.31 pm): Thank you, Mr Speaker, and can I add my congratulations on your election to the important role of Speaker of this House. I rise for the first time today honoured to represent the people and community that I grew up in and love, and conscious of the incredible responsibility that has been bestowed upon me. I know that my presence here is rather unlikely so I thank the constituents of Gaven for their trust in me. My first acknowledgement is to the traditional owners of the land on which we gather here today, the Jagera and Turrbal peoples. I also acknowledge the traditional owners of the land that I represent, the Kombumerria and Wangerriburra people, and pay my respects to their elders past, present and emerging. One of my earliest memories of becoming interested in politics was in primary school where I learnt about our country’s cruel treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. I distinctly remember watching the Rabbit-Proof Fence in my year 7 social studies class and feeling a deep sense of shame. That shame heightened when I found out that our Prime Minister at the time, John Howard, was refusing to simply say sorry for the well-known and well-documented atrocities carried out against our First Australians. To sit in this House for the first time in the week of the 10th anniversary of Kevin Rudd’s National Apology to the Stolen Generations was a timely reminder of how much more we need to achieve along the path to reconciliation.

    BUSY SCHOOLS NEWS Term 2, Week 6 May 28 2021 Dear Parents, Mock Interviews Parliament House Visit We have now completed half of term 2, with only 4 weeks remaining of semester 1. This means that your child has only 3 semesters left before Work Experience Update they will be completing Year 12. All of our students are working towards their QCE and they will hopefully gain 3 credit points for semester 1. The QCE is Queensland’s senior schooling qualification. It is internationally recognized and a sign of academic and personal success. To receive a QCE, students must achieve 20 credits of learning, at the set standard, in a set pattern, while meeting numeracy requirements. The school is working with each student to track their progress to help them achieve the QCE. Once again I must reiterate the importance of students attending school so they can stay up to date with all learning and assessment. This will help students to achieve their QCE and successfully graduate from Year 12. Attending school also prepares students for the workforce by demonstrating they are punctual and reliable. If parents need to contact the school about their child’s attendance or any other matter we ask that you contact via telephone on 0734404241 or email. WWF-Australia’s Renewable Superpower Scorecard compared how government policy is supporting each jurisdiction’s transition to becoming a renewable energy exporter. Queensland did not receive a high score, and the upcoming Queensland budget is an opportunity for change that will benefit all Queenslanders. As a state with an abundance of renewables, there is no reason why - with the right vision and investment - we shouldn’t be helping to power the world. The recent blackouts in Queensland demonstrate the urgent need for increased investment in the Sunshine State. As the Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen, the Hon Michael de Brenni noted, it was renewables and storage in the form of wind and pumped hydro that helped get the power back overnight after the blackouts. Increased storage capacity is critical as momentum builds in the transition to renewables. That is why we call on the Queensland Government to increase its investment in, and stimulus for: ● Utility-scale renewable energy storage; ● Community batteries; ● Home renewable energy storage batteries; and ● The development of a renewable energy exports strategy for Queensland.

The Palaszczuk Government takes the concerns of the community seriously and we are committed to supporting police in their efforts to keep our community safe. I can advise that the Member for Gaven, Ms Meaghan Scanlon MP, has been a strong advocate for local police and for a new police facility to be built on the Northern Coast. On 8 August 2019, in the company of Ms Scanlon, I officially announced a new police facility will be built in Pimpama by the Palaszczuk Government. The new police facility will be co-located with a Queensland Fire and Emergency Service facility on 2.4 hectares of land at the corner of Cox and Yawalpah Roads, Pimpama. In addition, the Police Commissioner has announced that an extra 20 officers will be allocated to the Coomera and Nerang Policing Divisions by mid-2020. These new officers are funded by the Palaszczuk Government. Currently, policing services to the Ormeau and Pimpama areas are provided by the Coomera Police Station, which provides a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week police capability with officers performing proactive mobile patrols and responding to calls for service.
