Reaching Oregon

Oregon’s Climate An Extraordinary Environment Globally Connected

Nestled between Washington and California, Oregon (pronounced “Or-eh-gun”) is the tenth largest state in the U.S., has a population of 3.9 million, and is home to more than 45 accredited institutions of higher learning, over 20 of which are members of Study Oregon. Our Pacific coastline, Cascade and Coastal mountain ranges, forests and farmlands, and cities and towns offer an abundance of settings that are welcoming and safe. In addition, many are nationally recognized examples of outstanding urban planning, committed to environmentally friendly practices, and are simply fantastic places to live.

Oregon also has a vibrant arts scene, open government, active citizenry, and award winning media that lend to its reputation for creative and innovative ideas. In addition, Oregon offers a number of great shopping venues; and Oregon, unlike most states in the U.S., does not charge a sales tax.

From hydro to solar to wind power, Oregonians have shown interest and commitment well ahead of other states, and thanks to the state’s unique natural resources, government policies, and cultural “ethos”, Oregon has become a world leader in these technologies.

Today, Oregon’s niche sectors include athletic footwear, creative services, design, organics, recreation equipment and apparel, open source technologies, and even breweries and bottlers, which have put Oregon on the map of “places to be” for their respective national and international communities of interest.

Oregon also has an interesting place in U.S. history. In the mid-1800s, Oregon gained fame as the final point for explorers Lewis and Clark and their expedition, as well as for being a major western migration route known as the “Oregon Trail”. To this day, Oregon continues to be an admired destination for both visitors and residents alike. Globally Connected Reaching Oregon

Located on the Pacific Rim, Oregon holds national and global competitive advantages in areas such as clean technology, outdoor gear and apparel, advanced manufacturing, and forestry and wood products, and is home to the “Silicon Forest”, a concentration of high-tech, “small-tech” and semiconductor companies that have made a name for Oregon across the globe.

Oregon is headquarters to world-famous companies such as Nike and Columbia Sportswear, and has significant presences of leading companies such as Intel, Adidas, SolarWorld, Sanyo Solar, Vestas, and Daimler Trucks.

I am student at Chemeketa Community College. Chemeketa is a wonderful place to go to study. The classes at Chemeketa are nice and small. There are no more than 25 students in

“ each class, which helps the professors to remember the students’ names and faces, and helps students to understand

the information better. The professors are really nice, and they are very helpful, especially if you are an international student. Also, the tuition is not too expensive.“ Chemeketa is in small town called Salem. Salem is not a very crowded place and is not an expensive place for students to live. What I like best about my major are the professors and wide range of careers that I could get into after graduation. The professors are extremely helpful and are willing to give the students every possible opportunity and skills to excel in the field. We are also able to do an externship at a site of our choice, which is what I am looking forward to next year.

My advice for any incoming student is to build a support group. Build strong relationships with people that are like-minded because they will be there for

After I graduate from Oregon Tech I plan on going to graduate school where I’d like to get my degree in Elementary Education or School Counseling. “

My advice to new students is, don’t underestimate your skills and ability to learn new things. Set a goal for yourself and stick with it. After graduation, I would like to work for an IT firm, and possibly pursue my Masters degree.

“SOU has been a refreshing experience. I appreciate the cultural variety of students in such an amazing,“ serene surrounding. The low student-to-faculty ratio “ takes the educational experience to another level, with the professors actively engaging with the students. SOU has been the right choice for me.”

“I felt really welcome here. Because SOU is a small school, people get to know each other, and this creates“ “ a nice support network—especially if you are an international student.
