General Sessions

Session I- December 10:00 a.m.

Note: The order of items in the agenda was adjusted to accommodate reports from Men’s LDR (MLDR) representatives on other committees when these representatives were present in the MLDR meetings. These minutes present agenda items in the order that they were discussed.

The meeting was called to order by Chair Ed Torres.

The Chair introduced the MLDR Executive Committee and Sub-Committee members in attendance.

Minutes from 2012: A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes of the MLDR Committee from 2012 USATF Annual Meeting. There was no discussion. The motion passed.

Men’s LDR Primary Mission and Goals (2014-2016): The Chair discussed the continued commitment towards USATF Men’s LDR’s primary mission: He mentioned providing the best opportunities for U.S. athletes at the Olympic Trials so they could represent the U.S. well at the . Houston and Los Angeles are the two sites that are in the running to host the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials. The Chair emphasized that he wants to work closely with the USATF Women’s LDR Chair to do whatever they can to support U.S. athletes.

2013 Men’s LDR Committee Awards: The Chair announced the four Men’s LDR award winners that were selected by the Men’s LDR Committee:

Team USA Opportunities and Selection Criteria in 2014:

Will Leer reported on Chiba. The U.S. placed 5th overall. Will mentioned that the Japanese was a great host. Eight athletes participated from the U.S. at Chiba. Two alternates raced 5km on the track.

Bob Hirsh (IAAF) -World Half Copenhagen March 29, 2014

He explained having the world ½ in March might create more interest.

IAAF has announced 2016 World Half awarded to Karof, Wales.

Bill Roe discussed the selection criteria for the NACAC Cross Country Championships team. He commented that Jamaica did a great job of hosting this year’s Championships where Canada dominated the various competitions. Team USA’s Senior Men’s squad, however, took home the gold in front of Canada’s runner-up finish.

The Chair explained that the U.S. men’s selection standard for the marathon at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Athletics (Beijing, China) is 2:17 or better.

He also explained that selection priorities for the 2014 IAAF World Championships (March 29, Copenhagen, Denmark) will be based on who finished in the top ten at the 2013 USA 20K Championships or 2013 USA 12K Championships providing (a) that performance are a sub- 1:04:00 half marathon equivalent per the Mercier Scoring Tables, and (b) the athlete demonstrates fitness between January 1, 2014 and March 1, 2014. Committee Reports:

Road Running Technical Council (RRTC): Gene Newman (RRTC Chair) discussed that the certifying races courses continues to be the main goal of RRTC. He said that it was important the courses are accurate. He reiterated that there needed to be an increase in the number of qualified individuals to measure courses in the U.S.

2014 Men’s LDR Championships Schedule: Bob Latham (Championships Subcommittee Chair) presented the USATF Men’s LDR National Championships for 2014 (and beyond). The championship schedule is shown below.

2016 and 2017: Columbus Half-Marathon, Columbus, OH, $42,300

Motion made to add Bix to Championship list adding $15,000. Motion was seconded. Motion passed.

(Rules) Phil Greenwald-As per our conversation you said you would talk to Phil. Phil’s discussion and motions took up a big bulk of the time of the 1st General Session.

(Substance Abuse Education) Jim Peterson-Additions to what is on the library.

(Coaches Advisory) Bob Larsen-Vice Chair Southern California

In meeting with Coaches Advisory mentioned getting input from coaches who work with professional athletes. Bob Larsen encouraged athletes and coaches both to attend Coaches Advisory from both the United States and Coaches Association and USATF.

(Athlete Development Program)-Brian Jones (ADP)

Defined how ADP assists post collegiate athletes in getting help to continue to enter events. (Stipends, travel, & money)

ADP ( Athlete Development Program ) Brian mentioned that there are standards in place for athletes who do not have sponsorship. Brian mentioned he works more than ever with race directors.

Ed Torres in open discussion mentioned that a decision had not been made regarding who will host the Olympic Marathon Trials and there will be further discussions before making a decision. NBC will televise the Olympic Marathon Trials

(Records)-Andy Carr

His mentioned his report is available on library and wants the committee to approve the two records for consideration. Motion was made to approve the records and motion was seconded.
