The second section of the manual includes a description of the Zip™ Tools software package and how the different programs install on your Macintosh. The manual also includes a detailed problem solving guide which can be used to diagnose and solve problems you may encounter while using your Zip drive and Iomega software with your Macintosh. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Section 1.2 VIEWING AND PRINTING THE MANUAL This manual was prepared using DOCMaker software and can be used on screen or printed as needed. Syed Iftikar: Good afternoon, Tom. Nice to be here. Gardner: Syed, good to see you again. Iftikar: Good to see you, too. Gardner: I’m Tom Gardner, and I’m with the Computer History Museum Storage Committee, and we’re here today to conduct an oral interview of Syed Iftikar. Syed is a serial entrepreneur, and serial inventor. We will cover about 35 years of his career at a number of companies in the disk drive industry, and perhaps even one in his home country of India, not a disk drive company. In interests of full disklosure, Syed and I have worked together over the years. Early on, Syed worked for me. Later on I worked for Syed. With that, Syed, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself? Iftikar: Well, as Tom says, I’m Syed Iftikar. I was born in India. At a very young age I had the fortune of being the fortunate one to take over my dad’s company. So when I was about 20 years old, I got to understand and experience a lot of things associated with running a business. Some of the things I did well. Some of the things not so well. But at the same time, I went to college full time. Got my college degree. -

DIGITAL STORAGE DEVICES Device Name: Jaz Drive Date Introduced: 1GB in 1995; 2GB in 1998 Dates in Use: 1998-2004 Variations and/or Identifying Features: removable disk drive. Both the Jaz drive and the disks come in two sizes, 1GB and 2GB. The two sizes look similar, but a 2GB disk is not compatible with a 1GB Jaz drive. The 2GB Jaz drive can use both disk sizes. It is a single hard disk platter in a removable enclosure, with the motors and heads in the fixed drive. It features a 12ms seek time and a transfer rate of 5.5 Mbps. Jaz drives are primarily external devices, typically connected to a SCSI port. Common Manufacturers/Brands: Iomega Corporation Associated Software: IomegaWare is the software necessary to install the drive. A Jaz drive comes with software to back up the hard disk, to record and playback voice, music and video files, to temporarily use the Jaz drive on another computer, and to duplicate Jaz disks using one Jaz drive Associated Media: Jaz Disks Interface: The Jaz drive uses the Small Computer System Interface (Small Computer System Interface) and requires a SCSI controller. Jaz drives are SCSI devices and are available as an external drive with a 50-pin SCSI-2 self-terminating interface or an internal 3-1/2 format drive with a 50-pin header interface. Jaz drives come with ultra-SCSl interface connector and require a separate SCSI card (unless you use Macintosh). Primary Usage: Backup storage /everyday storage The Jaz 1GB and 2GB drives and disks were commonly used in industries such as graphic design and publishing, software development, industrial 3D CAD/CAM, enterprise management systems and entertainment authoring markets. -

Vonkajšie pamäťové média 1/39 Vonkajšie pamäťové média Charakteristika a princípy vonkajších pamätí Vonkajšia pamäť je charakteristická tým, že do nej nemá procesor priamy prístup – nie je procesorom priamo adresovateľná, ale dáta sú prenášané prostredníctvom rozhrania a jeho radiča, ktorý zabezpečuje aj adresovanie. Účel vonkajšej pamäti F uchovávanie programov a dát v čase vypnutia počítača F operatívne uchovávanie tých programov a dát, ktoré nie sú v danej chvíli bezprostredne potrebné pre prácu – prepisovateľné médiá F zálohovanie programov a dát – záložné kópie aktuálne používaných dát, dokumentov, projektov...- prepisovateľné médiá F archivovanie programov a dát – uloženie už spracovaných dát a projektov pre prípadnú potrebu v budúcnosti – vhodné sú neprepisovateľné médiá F prenos programov a dát medzi počítačmi - prepisovateľné médiá Používané princípy záznamu Magnetický záznam. Umožňuje mnohonásobný zápis aj čítanie dát (RWM). Vy užíva princíp zápisu a čítania pomocou magnetickej hlavy, pričom aktívnou záznamovou vrstvou je magnetická vrstvička Fe2O3 alebo CrO2 nanesená na základnom materiáli (polyester, kov, keramika). Zápis: Prechodom prúdu cievkou v hlavičke vzniká elektromagnetické pole, ktoré spôsobí v magnetickom médiu vytvorenie mikrooblastí s určitou orientáciou magentického poľa – magnetickú polarizáciu. Zmenou smeru pretekania prúdu v záznamovej hlavičke a tým zmenou parametrov magnetického poľa je potom možné v záznamovom médiu vytvárať mikrooblasti, zodpovedajúce hodnotám “0” a “1”. Čítanie: Využíva sa buď magnetická indukcia: Prechodom hlavičky konštantnou rýchlosťou nad zmagnetizovaným povrchom sa v čítacej hlavičke indukuje el. napätie, ktorého hodnota odráža sled magnetických mikrooblastí - jednotiek a núl – na záznamovom médiu. alebo magnetorezistivita: využíva sa špeciálny senzor, ktorý registruje zmenu veľkosti čítacieho prúdu v závislosti od orientácie mag. poľa elementu, nad ktorým sa práve senzor nachádza. -

Memory The microprocessor was a significant key to lowering the cost of the personal computer. However the other key and an equally important one was low-cost semiconductor memory. Semiconductor memory started replacing magnetic core memory around 1967. Their are two types of semiconductor Random Access Memory (RAM). Dynamic RAM (DRAM) requires periodic refresh of the memory contents and Static RAM (SRAM) retains the contents without refresh. Both types of RAM loose their contents when the power is turned off. Read only memory (ROM) retains its contents once it is programmed, even when the power is turned off. The first commercial 1K metal oxide semiconductor DRAM was the Intel 1103 released in October 1970. This chip had a pivotal role in undercutting the price and replacement of core memory. Intel continued to improve DRAM capacities with the release of the 4K 2107 chip in 1972 and the 16K 2117 chip in 1977. However, competitive challenges from Japanese companies, would have a significant impact on Intel and other North American producers of memory chips. Japan decided to make a strategic investment in the semiconductor memory industry around in the late 1970’s. The effect of this was the first open market release of a 64K DRAM chip by Fujitsu Limited in 1979, and introduction of the first 1-megabit DRAM chip by the Toshiba Corporation in 1985. A number of other factors contributed to the dominance of Japanese manufacturers in the 1980’s. -
