I have pleasure in reporting that the charity was again confidently able to fulfil its remit of presenting Bibles to boys and girls in the Primary Schools of the United Kingdom. During the year 31,729 children received a personal Bible in 465 schools bringing the total number of Bibles presented since the charity was established in 1997 to 358,459.

During the year the charity was active in a number of new areas in the country and has now presented children with Bibles in every county in England and also in many parts of Wales and Scotland. Over 5,000 Welsh speaking children have been given a copy of Beibl y Plant, the Welsh language edition of the charity’s Children’s Bible. Through the auspices of Mrs Janet Hawking and a number of supporters, both corporate and private, the West Wales Fund is now able to help fund the “follow-on” scheme for Primary Schools in , Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. Over the years the work has significantly grown in Hertfordshire due to the outstanding work of Andrew Masters in some thirty schools in the Hemel Hempstead area and the support of Mike and Brenda Taylor and others in the St Albans and Tring areas. More and more churches are now supporting the “follow-on” scheme for their local schools.

The year also saw new links being forged with other organisations including “Counties” which has a special ministry to Primary Schools through links with local churches and its “Life Exhibition”, using modern IT technology to bring the understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ to young people. Full details are on the “Counties” web-site. This link has already enabled Bibles for Children to develop presentations to ten schools in the Ludlow area of Shropshire. Partnerships already established with a number of Church of England diocesan education departments continue to bear fruit with new schools being helped.

In a difficult economic climate, the charity’s income has been maintained over the year and it is gratifying to report that Bibles for Children is now so highly regarded nationally that it continues to attract support for its work from schools, beneficial organisations and private individuals in many parts of the country.

All the Trustees, Associates and helpers give of their time freely. As in previous years, the accounts have been prepared on the accruals basis and independently examined by Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants. Management and administration costs have again been kept below 4% of expenditure.

I wish to extend my grateful thanks to all those who have supported the charity and indeed made the work possible. In our seventeenth year, I would welcome that support to continue to enable us to carry on the vital work of bringing God’s Word to many more young hearts and minds.

Ted Hudson Founder/Chairman, Bibles for Children

• 2 • ORIGIN AND OBJECTS OF THE CHARITY Bibles for Children was founded by Ted Hudson in July 1997, and established by a charitable trust deed. It was registered with the Charity Commissioners of England and Wales as Charity Number 1063200 and in Scotland as Charity Number SC037757 with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.

The charity was formed with the main aim of advancing the understanding of the Christian religion through the provision of Bibles and Bible related materials (not provided by statutory funds) to Primary School children and their schools throughout the United Kingdom. How the Charity operates When a presentation is made, every boy and girl in Year 2 to Year 6 in the school receives one or other of the three Bibles detailed on page 4. A special presentation label with the child’s name and the name of the school is placed in each Bible. We also send one additional free copy for each class teacher. The Bibles belong to the children. We anticipate that they will leave them in school to be used in R.E. lessons and reading time, but taken home when not in use and when they leave. The Children’s Bible, which is very ‘user-friendly’, is used in many schools during the “Literacy Hour”. The Bibles given at the initial presentation are free but due to the high cost of carriage, there is a part- carriage charge of £15 for up to 50 Bibles, or £25 for the first 100 Bibles plus a further £15 for each additional hundred or part thereof. Presentations usually take place at a school assembly with the presentation being made by a school or church representative and requests for Bibles can be made by completing the Application Form sent with our Information Pack on request by phone, post, e-mail or fax. In the years following the initial presentation, we encourage schools to adopt our ‘follow-on’ scheme which is described below. FOLLOW-ON SCHEME Once a presentation has been made, the Trustees feel that it is very important that children moving into Year 2 have their own Bible, and also, that each child leaving the school from Year 6 is equipped for life with a complete Bible. Provisions of the follow-on scheme If a school, which has had a first free presentation, can provide support for Bibles for Children or find sponsorship to an amount of £5.80 per child, the charity will be pleased to provide copies of ‘The Children’s Bible’ for all new Year 2 pupils and the complete ‘Rainbow Good News Bible’ for all pupils in Year 6. They are delivered to the school with no additional carriage charges. The Children’s Bible has a recommended retail price of £12.99 and the Rainbow Good News Bible £15.99, so the scheme represents a considerable saving. The Welsh edition of The Children’s Bible, Beibl y Plant, is available as an alternative and variations can be made to suit individual schools. Some suggestions for obtaining support for the follow-on scheme Appeal to one of the following: 1. A local church organisation such as a Church Council or one of the many Churches Together Groups. (Many schools which have adopted the follow-on scheme work with the local church community which can provide funding and thus forge a link between school and church). 2. A locally based charitable organisation. 3. A local business. 4. The school P.T.A. for direct funding or for them to arrange a special fund-raising event. (We find that parents are often very supportive of the scheme).

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2013 which are set out in the annual report. Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) or under Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (the 2006 Regulations) and that an independent examination is needed. The charity prepares accrued accounts and I am qual - ified to undertake the examination by being a qualified member of Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales.

It is my responsibility to: • examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 and under section 44(1)(c) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 (the 2005 Act); • to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and • to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner's report My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission and is in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: • to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and section 44 (1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and • to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act and section 44(1)(b) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
