Signing In to Library Computers For personal use of library computers, sign in with your library card number and Personal ID number. For a computer class, sign in with these codes: 627837 1212 Note: Be careful not to type the letter “O” for a zero (0) or the letter “l” for a one (1).

Gmail Tips and Tricks Gmail has excellent tips and tricks for Gmail and more. Start by logging in with your Gmail account. Sign in with Your Google Account Each time you wish to view your email you must do the following: 1. Use a computer with Internet access 2. Go to www.gmail.com 3. Type in your email address 4. Type in your password 5. Click “Sign In”

Gmail Inbox The first screen you see when you log in to your Gmail account is the Inbox. The Inbox is one part of the Gmail interface. Interface means the parts of the screen you use to work with Gmail. For example, a search box, a button, or links. You will learn about the major parts of the Gmail interface next.

2 | Gmail Level 2 The Gmail Inbox is where you see people send to you. Your are organized into a few categories, and will be waiting for you under different tabs. For example, if you receive an email about a sale from a shopping site, you’ll find that email under the Promotions tab.

Gmail messages are grouped into conversations so all the replies to a message are stacked neatly below it. This makes it easy to find related messages, read them in context, and keep your inbox tidy.

Search for Email Hunting around for an email you read last week? Use the Gmail search box, and click the gray arrow to filter your search with more specific information, like who sent the email. Suggestions appear instantly as you type, making your search even speedier.

Gmail Settings If you ever want to change your settings, learn to solve a problem, or give feedback, just click the gear icon in the top right corner of any page in Gmail. Change the size of the text and images with Display Density options. Explore Settings and Themes to change the overall look of your Gmail interface. The Help link is excellent to get more information on how to use Gmail features.

3 | Gmail Level 2 Attachments in Gmail An attachment is a computer file sent along in an email message. To attach a file to an email is like using a paper clip to join a picture to a letter you send by regular mail. Compose, Attach and Send Here’s how to attach a file to a Gmail message: 1. Click Compose button 2. Type recipient address in the To: box 3. Give the message a descriptive subject 4. Type a message in the large white box 5. Click Send when finished 6. Click the paper clip icon near the Send button. 7. Choose a file from the file upload window a. On library computers, you can choose a file from a USB drive 8. Select the file and click Open 9. The title of the document appears when uploaded You can remove the file by clicking the “x” on the far right of the file name box 10. Click Send Open an Attachment When you get Gmail attachments you can view them and save them. However, opening and saving (downloading) attached files exposes your computer to hazards such as viruses. Consider these questions before opening or saving any attached file: ! Is it from someone you know and trust? ! Were you expecting the attachment? ! Is the message or attachment suspicious, even if from a friend? View or download an attached file in Gmail: 1. Open a message with the “paper clip” icon in the far right next to the date or time 2. Look for the file name and icon near the end of the message 3. Click View to see the file in a new browser tab* 4. Click Download to save to your computer** *File will open in a new tab on library computers. **Using library computers, you will be asked to open, save or cancel the file download. You can save the file to Google Drive, to a USB drive or even to the desktop to Gmail to yourself.

4 | Gmail Level 2 Internet and Gmail Security Using Gmail and the Internet exposes you and your computer to scams and computer viruses. Do not respond to unsolicited requests for personal identification or financial information in emails. In Gmail Level 2 you will learn about attachments and links in emails—do not open attachments or click links unless you know and trust the sender and the message makes sense coming from the sender, be that your family member, friend or financial institution. A is a destructive program that can damage your computer’s operation and information. Computer viruses most commonly arrive from downloaded software or from Gmail attachments. Downloading means transferring a program from another computer to your own. It’s a good idea for anyone using the Internet at home to obtain and install anti-virus software for his or her computer. Drive is a really excellent service because you can create documents, store them, share them and download them from any computer connected to the Internet.
