Some of tennis’ biggest stars are a win away from colossal quarterfinals. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka could meet Friday in a Roland Garros final rematch, while the first Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal match of 2015 is also a potential quarterfinal. But first things first, the four Grand Slam champions must post victories on Thursday against the likes of No. 13 seed David Goffin, No. 15 seed Kevin Anderson and ageless ace king Ivo Karlovic. FEDERER EYES QUARTERS: Federer opened on Tuesday night with a straight sets win over Roberto Bautista Agut to improve his career record to 38-8 in Cincinnati. Since a 1-4 start in Cincinnati, the Swiss superstar has compiled a 37-4 record since 2005 when he defeated Andy Roddick for his first of six Western & Southern Open titles. Federer is looking to reach his ninth quarter-final in his last 11 appearances. Federer takes a 3-0 FedEx Head 2 Head record against No. 15 seed Kevin Anderson, who is appearing in his first R16 in Cincinnati. DJOKOVIC SEEKS GOLDEN MASTERS: Djokovic is attempting to become the first player to sweep all nine different ATP Masters 1000 titles in his career. He has never missed the Western & Southern Open since qualifying for the event in 2005 as the 97th-ranked player in the world (l. to Gonzalez). The Serb is 23-10 lifetime in the Cincinnati main draw and making his 11th appearance at the tournament, most of any ATP Masters 1000 event. During the Open Era, only Lleyton Hewitt (28-11) has won more Cincinnati matches without capturing the title. Djokovic, who has reached nine straight finals this season, has lost in four Cincinnati championship matches, to Andy Murray in 2008 and ‘11, and to Federer in 2009 and ’12. LIKE FEDERER, NADAL IS DEFENDING TITLE: Nadal was unable to defend his 2013 Cincinnati title (d. Isner) last summer due to injury. Nadal also withdrew from the Western & Southern Open in 2012, so his last loss in Cincinnati came to Mardy Fish in the 2011 quarter-finals. Before beating Jeremy Chardy on Wednesday, Nadal was 14-8 in his previous eight hard-court tournaments, falling short of the semi-finals at each event dating back to the 2014 Miami final (l. to Djokovic). DON’T FORGET ABOUT ANDY: Coming off his third ATP Masters 1000 Canada title, Andy Murray seeks his third Cincinnati championship and faces No. 16 seed Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday. Murray has never won the Canada and Cincinnati titles in the same season, a feat that only six men have accomplished during the Open Era (since 1968). More often than not, sweeping the summer ATP Masters 1000 events is a sign of great things to come. The 36-year-old was last ranked in the Top 20 during the week of Oct. 20, 2008, not long after his run to the Western & Southern Open semi-finals. With his return to the Top 20 after this tournament, Karlovic at 36 yrs, 5 mons. would be the oldest player in the elite group since 37-year-old Jimmy Connors was No. 20 during the week of Feb. 19, 1990. NO AMERICANS IN SWEET 16: The final four Americans were eliminated in the second round on Wednesday. According to tournament historian Phillip S. Smith, 2015 marks the first time in Western & Southern Open history (since 1899) that no Americans advanced to the Round of 16. Only Federer (322) and Nadal (297) have more ATP Masters 1000 wins than Djokovic (254). Djokovic is seeking his first Cincinnati title, which would make him the first player to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 events in his career. It would also give him five ATP Masters 1000 titles for the season and 25 for his career – second only to Nadal (27). Djokovic has reached a career-high nine straight finals since falling in the Doha quarter-finals to start the season (l. to Karlovic). Of the nine finals, Djokovic has won six, highlighted by the eighth and ninth Grand Slam titles of his career (Australian Open d. Murray; Wimbledon d. Federer). Only four players have beaten Djokovic in 2015: Karlovic (Doha QF), Federer (Dubai F), Wawrinka (Roland Garros F) and Murray (Montréal F). The Serb has an 18-3 record against Top 10 opposition in 2015, beating every other Top 10 player at least once th Djokovic is No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings for the 160 week in his career, sixth all-time. He has been No. 1 the last 59 weeks (since July 7, 2014) Djokovic finished 2014 at No. 1 for the third time in four years (2011-12, 2014), winning an ATP World Tour-high seven titles in eight finals. Goffin improved his career record to 4-1 in Cincinnati after beating qualifier Lu and Verdasco. Goffin is 1-19 lifetime against Top 10 opponents with lone win over No. 9 Raonic (2014 Basel QF). Goffin has reached two ATP World Tour finals this season, at s-Hertogenbosch on grass in June (l. to Mahut) and at Gstaad on clay (l. to Thiem). He has returned to his career-high ranking of No. 14, first reached following 4R run at Wimbledon (l. to Wawrinka). The 24-year-old Belgian is playing his 17th ATP Masters 1000 event (17-16). Last week, he reached 3R in Montréal (d. Johnson and Querrey, l. to No. 4 Nishikori). In May, advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 QF in Rome (l. to Ferrer).
