  • Does the Primetime Television Upfront Still Matter? by Steve Sternberg
May 2019 #62 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ Does the Primetime Television Upfront Still Matter? By Steve Sternberg For American television viewers, the start of the new primetime television season is still four months away. For insiders at media agencies, networks, and advertisers, however, the Upfront season is placing thoughts of September squarely into May. Of course, the very idea of a fall TV season in today’s video world seems old fashioned. The broadcast networks might still adhere to fall and mid-season schedules for debuting new shows, but their competitors do not. Ad-supported cable networks premiere many new series when the broadcast nets are airing repeats and some limited-run series (mostly non-sweeps months and the summer). Premium cable networks, such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz, air new shows throughout the year. Streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, release full seasons of new series whenever they happen to be ready. CBS All Access does as well, although it releases new episodes on a weekly schedule, rather than all at once. In a television landscape of 10-episode cable series, and streaming services where you can binge- watch entire seasons, viewers don’t necessarily think in terms of TV seasons anymore. Nevertheless, the broadcast networks still hold onto a schedule that starts in the fall. Throughout April and May, cable and broadcast networks give presentations to the ad industry in which they unveil their fall schedules and discuss

  • BBDO Picks the Winners!
BBDO Picks the Winners! Once a year the advertising agency of BBDO picks what they consider the breakout hits for the upcoming fall TV season. Based on their highly regarded opinion BBDO picks six probable winners (they call them swimmers) for the season: Roswell and Angel are listed as probable breakthrough hits on the WB. Joss Whedon, creator of the hit series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, combines supernatural adventure and dark humor in the next chapter of the Buffy saga, Angel. The centuries-old vampire (David Boreanaz), cursed with a conscience, has left the small town of Sunnydale and taken up residence in the City of Angels. Between pervasive evil and countless temptations lurking beneath the city’s glittery facade, Los Angeles proves to be the ideal address for a fallen vampire looking to save a few lost souls. With the help of Buffy’s Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), and a shadowy figure known as “The Whistler” (Glenn Quinn), Angel has one last chance to save his own soul by restoring hope to those impressionable young people locked in a losing battle with their own demons. It has been called the City of Dreams, and Angel has come to fight the nightmares. WB2 Tuesday 8-9pm following Buffy The Vampire Slayer Analogy: “Interview with the Vampire meets the WB” In the summer of 1947, residents of the tiny town of Roswell, New Mexico believed they witnessed the fiery crash of an alien spacecraft. The federal government maintains it never happened. Now, on the eve of the fifty-second anniversary, the town once again comes together to celebrate the historic event some call an ill- fated visit from the stars and others call a hoax.

The essay’s specific aim is to transform carnivorous appetites by subverting the integrity of America’s national gastronomic emblem – the hamburger. The article examines how hamburgers are unsustainable food system commodities that exacerbate state-sanctioned climate change, analyzes the underpinnings of ecophobic beef literature—specifically the graphic narrative—that serves as state propaganda, and shows how American comics can alternately promote sustainability nexuses by creating awareness of how food systems impact climate change. Keywords American propaganda; Bob’s Burgers; climate change; Fox Broadcasting Network; hamburger; Industrial Livestock About the Author Sophie Christman earned her Ph.D. in English Literature at SUNY Stony Brook University. Her research areas include: nineteenth-century literature, environmental humanities, and ecocinema studies. • WE Tv Creative Brief
WE tv CURRENT MANDATE GENERAL STATEMENT WE TV continues to build on our fanbase of diverse female viewers (25-54). Even though our viewership is primarily female, we want to include both men and women in our casts. We are always on the search for fierce, loud, outrageous, must-watch, bold characters. We are on the hunt for authentic and complex stories with high stakes, juicy secrets, steamy relationships, big drama/conflict/emotions that can sustain multiple seasons. Our viewers respond to real emotion and stakes. Bottom line, we search for unique characters, layered story, originality, surprising hooks and purpose. WE TV's unscripted programming is currently focused on two nights: • Thursday nights are programmed for an African American audience, with celebrity docu- series (BRAXTON FAMILY VALUES, GROWING UP HIP HOP), strong non-celeb ensembles (HUSTLE & SOUL) and high-concept formats (BOSSIP). • Friday nights are programmed for a more general audience. We have continued success with celebrity- and relationship-based series such as MARRIAGE BOOT CAMP/MARRIAGE BOOTCAMP FAMILY EDITION, but we are open to ideas outside this genre. We are excited about the success of LOVE AFTER LOCKUP, which proves that shows about real people continue to work if they have big, bold promise and huge, unexpected hooks. We love massive, unfiltered characters like MAMA JUNE. Recipe for Success at WE tv: OUTRAGEOUS, NEVER-BEFORE SEEN, REAL WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR High-concept docu-series: For Fridays – real, Middle Americans in extraordinary circumstances navigating extreme, shocking, high-stakes, unexpected relationships and worlds – like in Love After Lockup. For Thursdays – organic organizing principles, juicy storylines, and dramatic romantic and familial relationships.
