Martin Lawrence has played a fast-talking cop in "Bad Boys," and a fast-talking crook in "Nothing to Lose." It seems only fitting he plays a fast-talking crook posing as a fast-talking cop in his latest film: "Blue Streak," from Columbia Pictures. Lawrence plays Miles Logan, a high-tech burglar who steals a diamond worth $ I 7 million and hides it in a construc- tion site just before he is arrested. After spending two years in prison, he discovers the construction site has become a police station. Logan hatches a plan posing as Detective Miles Malone to get into the station, and is immediately assigned to the bur- glary division, The laughs start rolling in at this point, as he runs rings around his partner Carlson (Luke Wilson, "Rushmore," "Home Fries"), the grizzled Detective Hardcastle (William Forsythe, "Virtuosity," "The Rock") and Tulley (Dave Chappelle, "Con Air," "Half Baked"), one of his old partners in crime. Lawrence is in his usual form in this movie, weaseling his way through one problem after another. While the plot of "Blue Streak" is totally unbelievable - it takes more than a , "Lethal Weapon" attitude and a badge to be a convincing police officer - Lawrence makes an amusing character out of his role. Maybe if the writers had ditched the three completely unnecessary and unfunny toilet jokes in the movie, and taken out 90 percent of Lawrence's profanity, "Blue Streak" would be less repetitive. It probably also would have earned a PG-13 rating. I still don't know why it's rated R.
