Consisting of highly Jane Houlding talented but mostly amateur singers from a wide range Beverly Krzmarcik of occupations, the choir is proudly presenting its 34th Marg McKenzie-Leighton season this year with five concerts. Its repertoire ranges from Renaissance masters to newly commissioned works, from classical styles to Broadway and vocal jazz, and from Patricia Ramos Ward masterworks for choir and orchestra to choral gems for unaccompanied voices . Sally Stelter In addition to its regular series of concerts, the GCC has performed in numerous Tammy teWinkel festivals, including the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales (3rd place winner in Felicia Urbanski the Mixed Choir Category), Toronto International Choral Festival, Guelph Spring Festi- Alison Vicary val, Elora Festival, and festivals in Salzburg, Austria, and the Czech Republic . Joanne Gonsalves The GCC has performed in England, Wales, Ireland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Nancy Jackson Holland, Germany, Sweden and Denmark, has been broadcast on CBC Radio, and has Naomi Matsui won prizes in the CBC National Competition for Amateur Choirs . Recordings include Laurie McDonald Noel, On Christmas Night; Songs of the New World; Good Cheare: Christmas Celebra- Anne McKenzie tions Old and New (with the Oliver Whitehead Jazz Ensemble), Christmas in the Royal Susanne Schmidt-McQuillan City, and Remember . Kayla Schnarr Gerald Neufeld has been conductor of the Guelph Chamber Choir since its founding . He holds the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa and Tenors is presently a professor in the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Western University, where Naoki Chiba he conducts choirs and teaches choral conducting . Previously, he taught in the music Chris Fischer department of the University of Guelph and conducted the University of Guelph choir Lanny Fleming with which he toured in Britain and Europe on two occasions . Under his direction, the Ken Frey Guelph Chamber Choir, the University of Guelph choir, the Faculty of Music Singers, Brad Halls and the Thames Scholars from Western University all won prizes in the CBC National Harold Jackson Competition for Amateur Choirs . Gerald Neufeld is a previous winner of the Leslie Bell competition for choral con- Lawrence Sugden ductors . He has served on juries for the Canadian recording industry’s Juno Awards, Peter Thompson the Leslie Bell Competition and the Guelph Spring Festival national vocal competition . He is active as a choral clinician, festival adjudicator, and lecturer on topics of special Basses interest in the choral field. Ken Carey Mark Haslett Alison MacNeill has been accompanist for the Guelph Chamber Choir for twenty- Brian Janzen five seasons. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Guelph and Andrew McLaren is the Director of Music Ministry at Harcourt Memorial United Church as well as an Neil McLaren independent music teacher and adjudicator, accompanist and chamber musician . Winegard paid his first official visit to the University of Guelph campus and addressed the members of the faculty and their wives at a special meeting in War Memorial Hall. In introducing the new President, Chairman of the Board of Governors, T.A. McEwan, paid tribute to Dr. Winegard's outstanding qualifications for the demanding role he has accepted. "Selecting our newPresident was not the most difficult, but it was the most important decision made in 1966," he said. Dr. Winegard, in his remarks, said, "I can never understand the argument that a professor could do research without teaching, or teach without doing research. I hope to continue doing research, and a little teaching." This campus has an outstanding and proud past. I look to the future, knowing that much hard work has been done in the past. I will continue to aim for the ideal - a sense of purpose and excellence in my chosen field." In conclusion, he told the story of Thomas Jefferson, who when presenting his credentials as Ambassador to France, received the comment, "I see you have come to replace Benjamin Franklin."     Media Release University volunteers recognized for community contributions Guelph, ON, March 26, 2014 – University of Guelph’s Professor Ajay Heble, Martha Harley and student Jenifer Truong are the recipients of this year’s Dr. William Winegard Exemplary Volunteer Involvement Awards. Presented by Dr. Winegard at a ceremony on Wednesday, the awards recognize the volunteer contributions of University of Guelph faculty, staff and students to community organizations in Guelph and Wellington County. “Ajay, Martha and Jenifer have shown how volunteers can turn their passions into lasting contributions benefitting people and organizations in our community,” said Christine Oldfield, executive director of the Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington. Mr. Heble’s passion for music led him to create the award winning and world-renowned Guelph Jazz Festival, now in its 20th year. His volunteerism extends to Amnesty International and raising funds for international relief through benefit concerts. Ms. Harley’s personal drive to support her community sees her volunteering with both Hospice Wellington and the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre, and offering pro bono professional advice to other small not-for-profits locally. Ms. Truong, a third-year Biomedical Science student, has dedicated herself to numerous causes, both locally and internationally. While balancing the challenges of school, family illness and two part-time jobs, Jenifer has shown incredible generosity of time, volunteering with such organizations as VIDA Medical, Project Serve Canada, the Guelph Community Foundation, Guelph General Hospital and Big Brothers Big Sisters. “Ajay, Martha and Jenifer are three dedicated volunteers, recognized today for their tremendous community spirit,” said Ken Dardano, executive director of United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin.

    > VOLUME 7 | ISSUE 1 | SPRING 2013 Guelph Students Favourites at North American Agri-Marketing Contest A team of University of Guelph students won second place and the admiration of their competitors at a North American agricultural marketing contest. Nine students in OAC agricultural business, science and marketing programs won second at the National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) student marketing competition in Kansas City, Missouri. The Guelph team finished just two points behind the University of Minnesota, and was voted “most favourite team” by the 29 competing teams. The U of G team was only one of two Canadian teams at the event, the other being from the University of Saskatchewan. Teams began brainstorming innovative agricultural products last fall.
