A new locality of Ulva intestinalis was found near Kr ąplewo in the River Samica St ęszewska located in the Wielkopolski National Park region (Wielkopolska). On the basis of Carlson's index ranges, waters of the Samica St ęszewska river were qualified as eutrophic. In the river single thalluses of U. intestinalis which appeared by its banks were observed. The presence of this Ulva species thalluses in the Samica St ęszewska river confirmed the results of trophy exam- inations of this river. U. intestinalis is a species attached to eutrophic waters – both salty, slightly salty and inland. This next found site of this Ulva species is the 35th site on the inland area of Po- land and the third in the Wielkopolska region. Altogether 59 localities of Ulva genera representat- ives, including U. intestinalis and 4 other species ( U. compressa , U. flexuosa , U. paradoxa , U. prolifera ) and one subspecies ( U. flexuosa subsp. pilifera ), were noted in limnic waters of Poland. The new locality of U. intestinalis in freshwaters of Wielkopolska contributes new and essential information about the distribution of this originally marine species on the inland area of Poland. The authors indicated the lack of studies in the scope of the mass thalluses influence from the Ulva genera on inland ecosystems and on water organisms inhabiting them. -

Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences, number 29, 38 pages, 1 figure, 1987.—Records of the benthic marine algae of the Island of Taiwan and neighboring islands have been organized in a floristic listing. All publications with citations of benthic marine green algae (Chlorophyta), brown algae (Phaeophyta), and red algae (Rhodophyta) in Taiwan are systematically ar ranged under the currently accepted nomenclature for each species. The annotated list includes names of almost 600 taxa, of which 476 are recognized today. In comparing the three major groups, the red algae predominate with 55% of the reported species, the green algae comprise 24%, and the browns 21%. Laurencia brongniartii}. Agardh is herein reported for Taiwan for the first time. The history of modern marine phycology in the Taiwan region is reviewed. Three periods of phycological research are recognized: the western (1866-1905); Japanese (1895-1945); and Chinese (1950-present). Western phycologists have apparently overlooked the large body of Japanese studies, which included references and records of Taiwan algae. By bringing together in one place all previous records of the Taiwanese marine flora, it is our expectation that this work will serve as a basis for further phycological investigations in the western Pacific region. Developing systems for the commercial culture of Ulva species in the UK Guang Gao A thesis submitted to Newcastle University in candidature for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Marine Science and Technology May 2016 Abstract The green seaweed, Ulva, is highly valued in terms of animal feed, food and biofuel, as well in the delivery of crucial remediation services including wastewater treatment and CO2 removal. Accordingly, Ulva cultivation has gained significant research interest worldwide. Notwithstanding these research efforts, Ulva cultivation is still in its infancy and knowledge to underpin such developments remains limited. A common challenge in Ulva cultivation is the fluctuating productivity with time due to vegetative fragmentation and/or periodic reproduction. In this study, three methods were employed to address this challenge. Firstly, culture conditions were optimised to establish a balance between growth and reproduction. Secondly, a refined culture method was developed, which more than tripled growth of Ulva over an 18-day cultivation as compared to a standard method. Thirdly, a sterile strain was obtained by mutating a wild strain with ultraviolet radiation. This new strain grew five times faster over an 18-day cultivation and absorbed nitrate and phosphate 40.0% and 30.9% quicker compared to the wild strain respectively. The chemical composition of the sterile strain showed a lipid content of more than double that of the wild strain, while the protein content was 26.3% lower than the wild strain. Several tissue preservation techniques were developed to enable settlement and growth trials to be conducted on demand. The merits or otherwise of the preservation techniques were determined for gametes, germlings and thalli. -

Raposa, Ph.D. Research Coordinator, NBNERR Brandon Russell University of Connecticut Ashley Bertrand US EPA Atlantic Ecology Division November 2011 Technical Report Series 2011:4 Introduction Macroalgae (i.e., seaweed) is an important source of primary production in shallow estuarine systems, and at low to moderate biomass levels it serves as important refuge and forage habitat for nekton (Sogard and Able 1991; Kingsford 1995; Raposa and Oviatt 2000). Macroalgae is typically nitrogen limited in estuaries and it can therefore respond rapidly when anthropogenic nutrient inputs increase (Nelson et al. 2003). Under eutrophic conditions, macroalgae can shade and outcompete eelgrass and other submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) species and lead to hypoxic and anoxic conditions that can alter estuarine ecosystem function (Peckol et al. 1994; Raffaelli et al. 1998). Macroalgae is therefore an excellent indicator of current estuarine condition and of how these systems respond to changes in the amount of anthropogenic nitrogen inputs. Narragansett Bay is an urban estuary in Rhode Island, USA that receives high levels of nitrogen inputs from waste-water treatment facilities (WWTFs), mostly into the Providence River at the head of the Bay (Pruell et al. 2006). As a result, excessive summertime macroalgal blooms dominated by green algae (e.g., Ulva spp.) are a conspicuous and problematic occurrence in many parts of the upper Bay and in constricted, shallow coves and embayments (Granger et al. 2000). Many of these same areas also experience periods of bottom hypoxia during summer, but the degree to which this is caused by macroalgae has not been quantified. -

Lindberg, Co-Chair Professor Wayne P. Sousa, Co-Chair Harmful blooms of green macroalgae, known as green tides, have been increasing in frequency and intensity world-wide over the last decade. Composed mainly of the macroalgae, Ulva, these blooms occur in areas of low wave energy and high nutrient input from anthropogenic sources; they often result in massive die-offs in the impacted ecosystem. My dissertation addressed three key questions concerning the potential for green tides to occur in central San Francisco Bay: 1) what species of Ulva inhabit the bay and which of them have been identified as bloom-forming taxa in other locations? 2) does an overwintering, benthic bank of dormant propagules contribute to the rapid growth of spring Ulva populations? 3) does waterborne spore availability limit the recruitment of Ulva populations? Within central San Francisco Bay, I identified six species of Ulva using genetic barcoding, only four of which were previously reported within the bay.
