BRIEFLY Earthquake The Good Fun too good initiative APN News & Media is making a nationwide appeal for funds to help Christchurch earthquake victims (see full page advertisement on page 20 and article page 21). The Courier’s parent company has donated $100,000 and is mobilising support through its nationwide media outlets. As part of the appeal The Star in Christchurch and APN Print have produced a special earthquake publication, full of stunning photographs and stories, illustrating the devastating effect on the region and the way its people have coped. Copies of this fundraising publication are available from the Courier office for $5 with all proceeds going to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal. Kawhia Police constable 7699304AA Perry Griffin is working on the principle that a gram of prevention is worth a kilo of cure. Last week he collected 30 safety helmets from Vaughan Glidden at The Honda Shop for quad bike riders in Kawhia. Constable Griffin says riders operating quad bikes without helmets was a key policing priority identified when he surveyed Kawhia community. ‘‘Rather than just chasing locals around and handing out tickets all the time, I decided to take a pro-active approach,’’ he says. ‘‘This is a generous spon- sorship from The Honda Shop — the 30 helmets have a combined retail value of around $3,600. Vaughan’s sup- port has been brilliant,’’ Mr Griffin says. He intends to give out 20 of the helmets to frequent quad bike users at Kawhia who do not have helmets. The other 10 will be made available for hire at the motor camp and other outlets — with TC140910GJ01 hireage fees being donated to VAUGHAN GLIDDEN of The Honda Shop presents 30 quad bike helmets to Kawhia Police Kawhia Fire Brigade and the constable, Perry Griffin. local St John Ambulance. Kihikihi ...open for business

With fresh paint, new proprietors and a sense of optimism, Kihikihi is truly open for business. There is a buzz to this small rural community as new shopping destinations open their doors. Kihikihi now boasts a new preloved clothing store. Altogether Lovely stocks a vast range of shoes, formal wear and those often sought after retro pieces. Town & Country Motors are always busy with car buyers looking for a good deal and great back up service. The team at Hairplay look forward to creating a fresh, modern, summer look for new and existing clients. Kihikihi is also home to many different sporting clubs. The Kihikihi Speedway has been in existence since 1954. To this day the club is still at the original location. Events are held predominately on Sunday afternoons which have proved to be one of its greatest strengths, creating a relaxed family friendly atmosphere. Mitavite International Horse Trials are one of New Zealands premier equestrian events and are held annually in April at the Kihikihi Domain.
