THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING OF THE UNIVERSE MARKS THE END OF THE 2018 The Liturgical Year or Church year, is the calendar of liturgical celebrations of the Church throughout the year. The Liturgical year is Christ Himself. The Catholic Church sets aside PASTOR’S NOTES certain days and seasons to celebrate various events in the life of Christ. The liturgical year begins with , the time for preparation for both the celebration of Jesus’ birth, and his expected second coming at the end of time. This season lasts until December 24th ( Eve). The season of Christmas begins with First Vespers of Christmas on the evening of December 24th and concludes with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (on January 8th 2018). Then, there is a short period of Ordinary time (seven weeks), before the season of . Lent is a period of purification and penance which begins on and ends on Holy Thursday. The Holy Thursday evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper marks the beginning of the Tridium, which includes , and Easter Sunday. These days recall Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples, Passion, Death, and Resur- rection. The seven week liturgical season of Easter, immediately follows the Tridium, climaxing at Pente- cost. The rest of the year is commonly called the Ordinary Time, during which, the Church reflects on the Ministry of Jesus ending with the great Feast of Christ the King of the Universe. This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Liturgical year 2018. The liturgical year has three Cycles A, B, and C. This first Sunday of Advent begins a new Liturgical Year and Liturgical Cycle C. During this year we encounter Jesus through the eyes of Luke, the evangelist.
