I would also like to thank those who participated in the research, for their participation, their honesty and for generating such insightful results. 2 Abstract ‘Lad culture’ – a phenomenon which exists predominantly amongst university students - has gained notoriety recently for its excessive alcohol consumption, sexist and homophobic ‘banter’, and objectification of women. However, research on the phenomenon in university environments, and its impact on women, is scarce. A relationship between involvement in lad culture and the likelihood of accepting and normalising sexual assault is inferred, however, it has not been empirically investigated. The aim of the current study is to examine this relationship and the impact of lad culture on students. Using a mixed methodology, the first stage, a quantitative investigation, involved a questionnaire and survey developed for the research, which measured students’ involvement in lad culture and acceptance of sexual assault (respectively) (n=59). The purpose of this stage was to test for a relationship between the two variables and, thus, if involvement in lad culture increases acceptance of sexual assault. A second, qualitative stage utilised a mixed- gender focus group in which five students were asked about their experiences of lad culture, in order to explore its characteristics and impact. The quantitative data revealed a significant positive relationship between involvement in lad culture and the acceptance of sexual assault amongst students. The qualitative data suggested that this was potentially brought about by a tacit acceptance of lad culture as a part of student life, and that it is a group phenomenon linked to the performance of masculinity. Alcohol use and the sexual harassment of women are used as ways to compete within groups of men. Despite the normalisation of the culture, findings also suggest that student men are beginning oppose it; keen to disassociate themselves, as individuals, from the phenomenon. 3 Findings hold implications for the research area in terms of being the first to uncover a relationship between ‘lad culture’ and assault, as well as the impact it is having on the student body. It provides an impetus on which to base the needed intervention programmes, to inform university policy against the culture and its dangers, whilst also offering a platform on which to develop further research.     FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES, 2016 VOL. 16, NO. 4, 610–630 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14680777.2016.1193293 Post-postfeminism?: new feminist visibilities in postfeminist times Rosalind Gill Department of Sociology, City University, London, UK ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This article contributes to debates about the value and utility Postfeminism; neoliberalism; of the notion of postfeminism for a seemingly “new” moment feminism; media magazines marked by a resurgence of interest in feminism in the media and among young women. The paper reviews current understandings of postfeminism and criticisms of the term’s failure to speak to or connect with contemporary feminism. It offers a defence of the continued importance of a critical notion of postfeminism, used as an analytical category to capture a distinctive contradictory-but- patterned sensibility intimately connected to neoliberalism. The paper raises questions about the meaning of the apparent new visibility of feminism and highlights the multiplicity of different feminisms currently circulating in mainstream media culture—which exist in tension with each other. I argue for the importance of being able to “think together” the rise of popular feminism alongside and in tandem with intensified misogyny. I further show how a postfeminist sensibility informs even those media productions that ostensibly celebrate the new feminism. Ultimately, the paper argues that claims that we have moved “beyond” postfeminism are (sadly) premature, and the notion still has much to offer feminist cultural critics. Beginning with a website on which women were invited to post their experiences, this has become a viral international movement (Bates 2014). 2012 also saw a wave of media interest in sexism amongst UK students, with a variety of articles on the phenomenon of ‘lad culture’ citing activities such as sports initiations, sexist themed parties, the sexual pursuit of women freshers (termed ‘seal clubbing’ in one institution) and a culture of casual verbal and physical sexual harassment in the nighttime economy and student social space (Bates 2012, Kingsley 2012, Sherriff 2012). Following this, NUS commissioned the first national study of ‘lad culture’, which became the basis of a major campaign of lobbying and initiatives (Phipps and Young 2013). Since the 1970s, critical gender and sexuality education scholars had been studying white heterosexual ‘laddism’ as a problematic form of masculinity (Willis 1977, Francis 1999, Jackson 2003, Jackson and Dempster 2009). However, the NUS intervention and subsequent media coverage lifted ‘lad culture’ to the status of a national media debate in the UK.

    Lad Culture in Higher Education Responding to increasing concerns about the harmful effects of so-called ‘lad culture’ in British universities, and related ‘bro’ and ‘frat’ cultures in US colleges, this book is the first to explore and analyse the perspectives of university staff on these cultures, which students suggest foster the nor- malisation of sexism, homophobia, racism, sexual harassment and violence. Drawing on in-depth interviews with a broad range of staff and faculty across different types of universities in England, the book explores the following key questions: • What is lad culture? • How and where is it manifest in higher education and what are the effects on students and staff? • How can ‘laddish’ behaviour be explained? • How can we theorise lad culture to enable us to better understand and challenge it? • How do dynamics in the United Kingdom compare to so-called ‘bro’ and ‘frat’ cultures in US colleges? By examining the ways in which lad culture is understood and explained, the authors illustrate that current understandings of lad culture obscure the broader processes through which problematic attitudes, practices, and educational climates are fostered. This analysis enables a theorisa- tion of lad culture that makes visible the gendered norms and intersect- ing structural inequalities that underpin it. The National Union of Students has been especially vocal in airing concerns, which more recently have been taken up by universities through bodies such as Universities UK. A small amount of work has explored students’ perspectives about, and experiences of, laddism. That research suggests that lad culture is particularly associated with groups of men in social contexts and involves excessive alcohol consumption, rowdy behaviour, sexism, homophobia, sexual harassment and violence. This paper is the first to explore staff perspectives: we draw on data from interviews with 72 staff across 6 universities to explore their perceptions of lad culture, including its prevalence, the contexts in which it occurs and the forms it takes. More recently, the press have reported several cases that they have identified as reflecting ‘lad culture’, including the production and circulation by the men’s rugby club at the London School of Economics of leaflets which had sexist and homophobic content; and students at Nottingham University singing a misogynistic chant that included a line about digging up a female corpse and having sex with it. The National Union of Students (NUS) has been concerned about ‘lad culture’ for a few years.
