William O. Johnstone In 1997, the Board of Trustees began to plan what that ro le should be: A community foundation that serves the dreams of a broad spectrum of donors and provides leadership in addressing the needs and opportunities of today, while building a permanent resource for tomorrow. In 1998, the Board and staff have made significant steps toward realizing this vision. Several focused initia­ tives have been undertaken in areas where the Community Foundation can provide significant resources and leadership. In the following pages, you will read more about how three very focused programs -- in the areas of scholarship resources, beautification and programming 2 in parks and public spaces, and non-profit management and technical assistance -­ have developed out of the long-range plan . We continue to be strong advocates and dedicated participants in NewOpportunities endowing this community, as we have since 1969. What began as one visionary's conviction that non-profits could best sustain their programs through endowment support has grown into a major community resource. John Kirkpatrick's initial vision and continued support for this program has helped the Community Foundation and hundreds of non-profit organizations build the total value of these endowments to $39.1 million. Over $1.6 million was distributed this year to Oklahoma City's charitable activities through the Designated Endowment Fund program. Southminster Spark Your community foundation now ranks 15th in the nation in the size of the endowment, and we are proud to note that we had the opportunity to direct $7 .3 million back into our community in fiscal 1998. We are dedicated to strengthening this community's endowment resources as well as our ability to meet community needs as they arise in the future. TheMargaret Annis Boys Trust Ballet Oklahoma I would like to welcome three new Trustees to the Board of the Community Foundation. Ron Norick, former Oklahoma City mayor, Christian Keesee, chairman of American Bancorp in Edmond, and Paul Odom, a real estate developer, will bring their experience and insight to further enhance our outstanding group of Trustees. Ed Barth and Frank McPherson retired from the Board after nine years of service, and James Young resigned after taking a position in Tulsa. We are extremely grateful for their service and leadership. The Community Foundation is fortunate to have input from a large and diverse group of advisory volunteers -­ both public and private, business and philanthropic. The collective expertise, ideas and dreams of our 12- member board, 17-member staff, 18 Affiliated Fund boards, 8 advisory committees, 200-plus Designated Fund agencies and more than 5,000 donors will shape a vision for tomorrow. 3 Over the next 12 months, we will host a number of anniversary activities to reflect upon the important work the Community Foundation has been able to accomplish on behalf of the community. We invite you to join us in these activities and help us celebrate the individuals and groups whose dreams for a better community have fueled our work for the past three decades.     Friends of the Capitol 2009-June 2010 Report Our Mission Statement: Friends of the Capitol is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation that is devoted to maintaining and improving the beauty and grandeur of the Oklahoma State Capitol building and showcasing the magnificent gifts of art housed inside. This mission is accomplished through a partnership with private citizens wishing to leave their footprint in our state's rich history. Education and Development In 2009 and 2010 Friends of the Capitol (FOC) participated in several educational and developmental projects informing fellow Oklahomans of the beauty of the capitol and how they can participate in the continuing renovations of Oklahoma State Capitol building. In March of 2010, FOC representatives made a trip to Elk City and met with several organizations within the community and illustrated all the new renovations funded by Friends of the Capitol supporters. Additionally in 2009 FOC participated in the State Superintendent’s encyclo-media conference and in February 2010 FOC participated in the Oklahoma City Public Schools’ Professional Development Day. We had the opportunity to meet with teachers from several different communities in Oklahoma, and we were pleased to inform them about all the new restorations and how their school’s name can be engraved on a 15”x30”paver, and placed below the Capitol’s south steps in the Centennial Memorial Plaza to be admired by many generations of Oklahomans. Gov. Fallin, distinguished elected officials, honored guests, and my fellow Oklahomans and friends: Two days ago, our nation suffered a terrible tragedy with the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Indeed, the tragedy directly touched Oklahoma, where friends and family members of two of the lost astronauts live. Our flags fly at half staff in their honor, our hearts are heavy for their loss, but our spirits are fortified by their bravery and selflessness. Please join me in a moment of silent tribute. A few weeks ago, on the South steps of the Capitol, I asked all Oklahomans to reflect on our strengths and to seek opportunities in the current budget crisis. Let’s be reminded of our strengths as we roll up our sleeves and get to work together. This is a great state, and we must be proud and thankful for so much. But, all too often, we have accentuated the negative. We must put aside our differences and renew our faith that we can do great things. I take comfort in my family: My wife, Kim, who is my partner in life and my three daughters, Leah, Laynie and Baylee, who are in school today. They give my life meaning. Without their love and support, I could not be here. Kim, would you please stand and be recognized? I also want to note that I take comfort in the fact that I address you from the same well where great leaders once stood - like David Boren, Henry Bellmon and George Nigh.
