I'm behind on my energy bills, credit cards and rent and my phone is ringing constantly with people demanding money. The stress is getting me down and I don't know how I'm going to pay what I owe. What can I do? The most important thing is not to panic. Remember that this is a common problem and help is freely available from Citizens Advice. Dealing with debt is daunting and at times seems insurmountable, but it is better in the long run to tackle your debts rather than taking out more loans. You first need to get a clear idea of who you owe money to: make a list of your creditors then work out which debts you should prioritise. The most important debts are those that would have the most serious consequences if you didn't pay them. You should look to get rent and energy bills sorted first so your home isn't at risk and so that your water and electricity keep running. Once you know your priorities, you should try to get a clear idea of how much money you have spare. Make a list of all your income and spending. Go through your spending line by line and think about any savings that you could make: can you cut any spending? Or switch your energy supplier? Can you walk to work and not take transport? Next, give your debtors a call. Stay calm and be honest with them: tell them how much you have available and see if you can agree a repayment plan with them. If you can't see any spare cash and do not have anything you can sell to make ends meet, then it is much better to first seek help than to take out a loan. Loans can sometimes end up getting you more into debt rather than helping you. You should remember that Citizens Advice can help you at any stage, and more advice is available here: http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/debt_e/faq_index_debt/faq_debt_debts _getting_out_of_control.htm Alternatively contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

We have lots of activities for children SUMMER READING at Okehampton Library during the CHALLENGE 2013 school holidays starting with the launch of this year's Summer Reading Challenge on Saturday 13th July with Rob from Entertainingly Different telling stories and poems at 11am.

Every year, thousands of families all over the country are involved in the UK's biggest reading event for children in libraries, the Summer Reading Challenge. In 2013, the Challenge is called Creepy House. The aim of the challenge is to get children to read six books from their library during the summer holidays. It's great fun for kids, it keeps them reading through the summer preventing their reading ability from dipping and what's more, it doesn't cost a penny to join. Just head to Okehampton library at the beginning of the summer holidays. Staff will enrol your children - it's completely free of charge - and every child will receive a membership pack. The Summer Reading Challenge is designed for children of all ages and reading abilities. They can read any books they like - fact books, stories, joke books, picture books - it's up to them. Audio books count too! As long as you're borrowing them from the library, they all count. Everybody who reads six books or more will receive a certificate and a medal. There are stickers and other small prizes to collect along the way. The challenge runs from the 13th July until the 7th September and the first 75 children who complete the challenge at Okehampton Library will be invited to a certificate presentation with entertainment provided by Entertainingly Different.

BSF gets to work on the joint Parish Plan We are embarking on the process of creating a joint Parish Plan - a way of setting out the vision of how we want our two communities to develop over the next decade. The Plan will represent your views and opinions on economic, recreational, environmental and development issues. And don't be fooled into thinking this is some pointless pen-pushing exercise; when completed our Parish Plan will carry real weight because it is based on evidence you have provided. With the recent changes in planning regulations it is increasingly important that parishes have a clear statement of what they do and don't want in their parishes. Now that the group has been formed to move the Plan forward, we are calling ourselves BSF - Bridestowe and Sourton Futures. With funding in place, a band of enthusiastic volunteers champing at the bit, we are ready for the off.

What is GOOD about Bridestowe and Sourton?

The next step is to discover what you think about your communities. At Bridestowe's Ram Roast on Saturday 3rd August, BSF will be using various ploys, including cakes, to get your attention and to encourage you to give your opinions on some key subjects. Please take time to look at the displays and add your comments. The group will also be present on Saturday 12th September when Sourton celebrates the founding of the Parish Hall fifty years ago. We hope these informal consultations will be informative, canvass opinion and inspire you to take an active part in the process.

What is NOT SO GOOD about Bridestowe and Sourton?

We shall remain in the village and will no doubt see everyone, probably in the shop! BaSE Page 15 History and Nature Together

Sourton Quarry is now a nature reserve, owned and managed by the Devon Wildlife Trust. It was the brainchild of Jean Gaydon Morse who in the early sixties bought and converted the quarrymen's cottages at the end of the lane. The Trust was able to buy the 21 acre quarry site from ECC Quarries Ltd in 1981 for the princely sum of £1. The area consists of the flooded quarry itself, a large number of waste dumps and the ruined buildings associated with both human habitation and its industrial use. It has been largely undisturbed for over fifty years and is home to mature trees, a wide variety of flora and fauna, but particularly bats where 11 different species can be found. Because of the potentially dangerous nature of the ruined buildings and sheer quarry sides and the delicate nature of the environment the site is closed to visitors except by permit. Once, however, it was a thriving, working community.

As the need to produce more food and improve the fertility of the soil became imperative during the late eighteenth century, various methods were employed to try to achieve this. Acidic soils near the sea were treated with seaweed or sea sand. Sometimes local limestone mixed with imported coal was burned and spread on the land. Areas miles from the sea with poor road connections in the days before the railway became widespread were usually unable to utilise these methods. By a sheer fluke of geology west Devon is the home of several narrow outcrops of steeply folded limestone running from to Launceston, so where they occurred landowners or farmers were quick to exploit them. Quarries were opened, machinery installed, kilns built, workmen recruited and soon a thriving local industry was underway. The remains of local ones can be seen at Sourton, and also at Stone, Blue Meadow and Combebow in Bridestowe parish, but none is accessible to the public. It is not known when the quarry opened, but writing in 1808 BaSE Page 16 Vancouver mentions the price of Sourton lime and a map published a year later shows a limekiln there. It is thought that the present set of four kilns date from 1818. As it takes about a week from loading, to burning, to cooling, to unloading, perhaps increased demand led to the new kilns being constructed so that a continuous supply of lime would be available. In 1851 there were eleven men from Sourton parish working at the quarry, doubtless joined by some from Bridestowe. The same number was employed in 1881, but twenty years later only three are recorded. As the quarry expanded overburden had to be stripped from the limestone, and this with other waste material was dumped in ever increasing piles around the site and give these quarries their distinctive look. Locally they are always referred to as the Ramps. They were built by drawing the material up an incline plane, or ramp, before tipping, the trucks being propelled by power from a waterwheel. The rock was blasted from the quarry face before being cracked, probably by hand, to a suitable size. It too came up the incline plane to the top of the kiln. Kilns were loaded, or charged, from the top with alternate layers of coal and lumps of limestone about the size of a clenched fist. The fire was lit from the base and the resulting lime was raked out from the bottom before being loaded into carts and taken away for spreading on the land or use in the building trade. The kilns and ramps at Sourton are very overgrown, but many features are still visible. Both waterwheel pits are fast decaying. The wheels were powered by water brought by leat from the adjacent marsh, in one case through a tunnel with a fine entrance portal and in the other along a galvanised launder. From the top of the ramps the course of the two leats can still be clearly seen snaking through the marsh. The quarry seems to have been part of the Millaton Estate in the early days before it passed to Louis Woollcombe of Ashbury. During this time it was rented to various groups including Crocker and Company and Rowe and Crocker before the name Palmer becomes involved. The Palmers were long-time farmers and lime merchants at Great Close before William Durrant, a relative of the Palmers became superintendent at Sourton at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1901 he was also described as a farmer and advertising for quarry workers which suggests the lime business was intermittent. The quarry appears to have closed in 1906 when it is said that it suddenly flooded. The likelihood is that the cost of pumping to keep the quarry dry was no longer cost effective. William Durrant retired to Great Close to be replaced in the Captain's House by his nephew John Durrant Palmer and his wife Mary. He farmed there until his death in 1940 when the house became empty and gradually fell into decay. Two of John's brothers had bought the quarry in 1926. After John's death they leased it for seven years to Selleck Nicholls and Company who extracted some of the spoil for ballast when making airfields in Cornwall, but this was not a success due to the soft nature of the stone. When the lease ran out they bought the property, but in turn their quarrying business was absorbed by English China Clays. If you are interested in nature conservation or industrial archaeology this fascinating reserve is well worth a visit. Guided tours are sometimes available or you can apply to the Trust for a permit. BaSE Page 17 TOILET HABITS Recently over a weekend the emergency drainage team from SW Water was called to clear a surcharging sewer at one of the lowest points in the village. The cause of the blockage was found to be an abundance of baby/cleansing wipes and cotton buds. The packing for these products states that they should not be disposed of in toilets. Please be considerate and remember bodily waste only should go down the toilet and all other items go in your normal household waste. Hopefully this will avoid us on the lower levels of the village having to walk around in yours!! Don't let this happen to your village!!

Plant Sale raises £600 The month of May ended on the Saturday with a Bring and Buy Plant Sale held at Leawood. This resulted in a profit of almost £600, which will be split between the Parish Church and the Children's Society. Our grateful thanks to everyone who came, those who donated plants and everyone who helped in any way - and particularly to our hosts Mrs Calmady-Hamlyn and the Coward family. In addition our Youth group made £28 for the Children's Society by selling a delicious selection of cakes made and decorated by themselves.

Regional Anglican services And on the Sunday it was St Bridget's turn to host the joint Anglican ’last Sunday of the month' service, when we were able to welcome the congregations of Bratton and Sourton. The arrangement is partly for practical reasons during the time there is no vicar for the five parishes west of Okehampton, but it is also good to meet as wider fellowships of Christian people more regularly. The next joint services will be on June 30th at , and then on July 28th at Lydford. Both are at 10.30am.

Modern Family Service thrives The month of June began in great style with the joint Anglican-Methodist family service at St Bridget's (with Methodists from Broadley as well). People of all ages seem to enjoy the more up-to-date lively service, and the many families present were kept well occupied and interested throughout. We thought about the problems of weeds in agricultural fields, and how Jesus used this as an analogy of the problem of evil in the world - and what we can do about it. We also had the pleasure of welcoming into the Church family Alexander and Benjamin Ford, the young sons of Paul and Melanie Ford, who were baptised by the Rev David Muir as part of the service. The two boys behaved impeccably, and it was a particular joy to hear hymns sung by a larger congregation!

An interesting Celebration Our joint evening Celebration services continued in June with an interesting talk on the Christian virtue of ’gentleness' - a revolutionary virtue in the tough and brutal world of the 1st century Roman Empire. It was followed by a short time of prayer which included handling ice cubes... ask someone who was there!

The Youth Group Youthy BLASTT continues to meet on Fridays once a fortnight. During June they had a ’Pots and Pans' evening. The welcome meal was pancakes with various toppings. It was very messy - and enjoyed by all! 16 youngsters managed to put away 70 BaSE Page 21 pancakes between them... And we discussed how we are like clay, and how God wants to make us into great people. The activity was making items (including pots) out of clay - also messy and great fun. Many thanks to Mike, Sheila and Clive Hatfield for leading this. After the two July meetings (see dates below), the youth club will take a break for the summer.

Coming up in July Wednesday July 3 7.00pm: Family Sports Evening, at Methodist Church. £1/£0.50p Friday July 5 7.00pm: Youthy BLASTT youth club, at Methodist church hall. BaSE Page 22 Meeth Quarry Meeth Quarry is unlike any other Devon Wildlife Trust nature reserve. Its industrial past has dramatically shaped its present. For nearly 100 years it was a series of busy clay quarries and mines. The site was an operational clay quarry until 2004 and throughout its working life remained off- limits to the general public. At its peak, in the 1970s the quarry was employing nearly 50 local people and producing 70,000 tonnes of clay per year. Much of this clay was used to make tiles, toilets, sinks and basins. The legacy of this industry has created a very diverse landscape. Today, two enormous lakes and massive piles of clay spoil dominate its features. Elsewhere there are ponds, woodlands, bogs and grasslands. Together these make Meeth Quarry nature reserve a home for a diverse range of wildlife and a wonderful place for people to explore.

What to see: 14 species of dragonfly and damselfly around the settling ponds and other areas of open water Butterflies (including wood white, grayling and green hairstreak) Brown hare in the sparse open areas on former clay ‘spoil’ heaps Skylarks and tree pipits in the open grassland Geese and ducks, including ruddy duck, shoveler and goosander, on the lakes

Due to the sheer size of the reserve and variety of habitats present in the landscape, Meeth Quarry has the potential to become a flagship nature reserve in the heart of the Northern Devon Nature Improvement Area. It is hoped that Meeth will offer year-round opportunities to see fascinating wildlife and a living demonstration of landscape restoration in action. Getting there The best way to visit Meeth Quarry nature reserve is by foot or by bicycle along the Tarka Trail (Route 27 of the National Cycle Network). The Trail bisects the heart of the nature reserve one mile from its southern end at Meeth. A bike park, picnic benches and information boards can be found here. Visit www.devon.gov.uk/tarkatrail for more details of the Tarka Trail. Meeth Quarry is on the southern edge of the village of Meeth on the A386 between Hatherleigh and . If travelling north on the A386 (from the A30), Meeth is approx 4 miles after Hatherleigh, and the reserve access road is on the left, shortly after passing the Meeth village sign. If travelling south on the A386, continue through the village of Meeth, past The Bull and Dragon pub on the right. The reserve access road is on the right, before leaving the last houses in the village. Follow the access road for half a mile and the car park is on the left. The access road gate will be locked between 8pm and 8am, daily. Access to the reserve between these hours is from the Tarka Trail on foot or bicycle. Alison Young (861157) BaSE Page 24 With the recent release of the film about Liberace, 'Behind the Candelabra' with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, Jeannette Sanders thought the following might be of interest.. Liberace Prior to working for Norman Wisdom, I was in 1956 engaged in compiling all the news cuttings for Liberace as well as other secretarial work during his London visit. This also included taking the money for his matinee performances at the Savoy Hotel, London. Of course at that time Liberace was involved in a court case against the Daily Mirror journalist/ columnist William Connors (known as CASSANDRA) - whose articles were extremely vitriolic, suggesting Liberace was homosexual, which at that time was deemed to be illegal. Most surprisingly Liberace won his case against William Connors, who must now be "laughing on a cloud" as he was, in the end, quite right in his observation. Whatever Connors had to say about Liberace's over-the-top clothing and performances, whilst I was working for the entertainer, I found him to be a very likeable, personable chap, with the most lovely dimples when he smiled, and, he was a joy to work with! Last month I reported a damp start to the season, and whilst at time of writing the rain is with us once again, I am extremely pleased to report that June has been a bumper month for the BCC superstars, not only with the weather, but more importantly with the results. The Devon League 1st XI have exploded into form with a run of stunning victories, chasing down impressive totals posted by the opposition. Highlights of month have come from the bat with Jack Hatton scoring consecutive half centuries, the Ewens in a controlled, cavalier fashion posting impressive scores, and the Fogertys displaying skill dexterity and composure, with Mark Fogerty leading the team home with a 93 not out. Not to be out done by his son, Phil Hatton completed an imperious knock of 133 against Kentisbeare to take BCC Devon League 1st XI up to 4th in the League. Whilst batting has been grabbing the headlines each victory could not achieved without control, guile and skill, both bowling and in the field under the leadership of 1st XI Captain Lee Jutson. The club continues to challenge and thrive in the Tamar League both the Sunday League and Evening League in fine company with Okehampton MPL, with 3 sides in Division A and B. High quality cricket being played at the weekends and midweek. Long may it continue.

And there's more......

Garden Club Report June 2013

The garden club visit to Castle Drogo on a lovely clear evening was enchanting and stimulating. The grounds had closed for the day and we were the only visitors with the guided tour lead by the head gardener. The enthusiasm and energy that he was putting into the garden were showing dividends and the Lutyens designed garden was re- emerging with restoration of the Dillistone plantings. The spectacular Summer Garden Visit views over the gorge were worth the short climb back up to the path and the Endsleigh Hotel Gardens walk around the formal gardens had us Milton Abbott all spellbound. We learned of the 11 July 2013 at 7.30pm difficulties and pleasures of doing the restoration and saw first hand the early results. We were drenched in the perfumes of wisteria and azaleas, intrigued by the process of making tall roses short ones, educated in the original planting plan and charmed by children's play house and garden. The final stop for tea and carrot cake cemented feelings of a perfect evening. All are welcome

The next visit will be to Endsleigh Hotel Please contact Tim Thorne if you gardens designed by Humphrey Repton would like to join us on 200 years ago for the Duke and Duchess 01837 861592 of Bedford. The garden is on the Devon banks of the Tamar overlooking a wooded gorge in the river. Simon Wood the Head Groundsman will be showing us around, with the arboretum, (with many specimen trees), a wonderful mixed herbaceous border which runs along the main lawn, a parterre laid out with water rills and low flower beds, (originally designed as a play area for the children) and a rose walk and the wooded streams running through the garden surrounded by groves of bamboo and Gunneras the evening promises to be fascinating.

If you would like to join us please contact Tim Thorne on 01837 861592 in plenty of welcome.
