Remove the black, flat perforated trim piece that runs in front of the windshield and wipers. First remove the rubber weather stripping in front of it by gently pulling on it towards the front of the . Then re- move the perforated trim by sliding forward and out.

In front of the driver side of the windshield there is a black box in the rain gutter. Its top is fastened down by 8mm head bolts (Torx T30 bolts on A4). Remove bolts 1-4 in Figure 1 using a socket wrench and deep 8mm socket (Torx T30 bit for A4).

Remove the driver side windshield wiper by first popping off the plastic cap at point A in Figure 1 with a small flat blade screwdriver. Unbolt the 13mm nut under the cap and gently wiggle the wiper arm off its post. Figure 2: ECU metal retainer clip

With the medium flat blade screwdriver, slip off the silver metal clip at point B in Figure 1. This will allow you to lift up the plastic cowling under the wipers and gain access to bolt 5 in Figure 1. Remove bolt 5.

Remove the black box cover. You will see the ECU inside. It is silver and has 2 big wiring harnesses going into it. With a flat head screw- driver in the other hand, pop off the metal retainer clip going across the ECU. Insert the screwdriver in the end of the clip as in Figure 2 and rotate it in the direction of the arrow to release the clip.

If you see a metal case around the ECU as in Figure 3, you will have to drill out the tamper proof bolts at point A. Free replacement bolts for reinstallation are available from AWE Tuning.

Once you have carefully drilled the heads off the bolts, you will be able to split the case apart. Gently pull the ECU out of the case, towards the Figure 3: Tamper proof bolts passenger side of the car.

With the key out of the ignition, pull the "T" shaped handles on the har- ness connectors outwards from each other, towards the sides of the ve- hicle. There are two connectors and it does not matter which one is released first.

The ECU will now be free from the car. Please download our Order Form under the FAQ section of our website for instructions on how to ship the ECU to us for chipping.

Installation is the reverse of removal. Before restarting the , turn the key to the “on” position and leave it there for 2 min- utes while the ECU recalibrates the throttle-body.
